This manual represents the opinion of a single developer. It has not been
ratified by the Debian project, and individual recommendations made within
should not be taken for the preferences of the Debian project.

Though I think any manual published on debian.org recommending aptitude for
upgrades is a bug that should be fixed.

> [2] http://wiki.debian.org/Aptitude

Well, and this is a page in a wiki about aptitude. The existence of such a
page is not a recommendation by the Debian project that it should be used.

Yes. Thanks for the info. This is my first python package so I'm still learning

aptitude is the preferred package management tool, so I'm thinking
that the priority of libboost-iostreams should be upgraded [1][2].
aptitude has more features than just a better dependency handler, like
the significantly more advanced search syntax and the smarter,
interactive resolver. I think the better decision is to edit it such
that it doesn't require that library. However, that's a decision for
the aptitude team to make, since I have no idea how heavily it relies
on that package, or what portions of the program depend on that
library.

I'd be glad to donate some of my time if the aptitude team wanted it though.

aptitude was historically the recommended tool to use for upgrades because
it had the best dependency resolver for handling the dist-upgrade case.
For so long as that's true, it should be priority: important, which means
that by definition the things that it requires are also priority:
important or higher.

If apt-get is now strong enough that we can recommend it for upgrades
without qualms, then aptitude is another alternative package manager and
standard may be fine. Is that now the case?

Bug#588608: aptitude (priority important) depends on libboost-iostreams (priority optional)

2010-07-15 Thread Steve M. Robbins
Folks,

The package "aptitude" is priority "important" and depends on
libboost-iostreams, which is "optional". This is a violation of
Policy section 2.5.

The request of Bug #588608 is to raise the priority of
libboost-iostreams to "important". Reading Policy, I note that
"important" means:

 `important'
Important programs, including those which one would expect to
find on any Unix-like system. If the expectation is that an
experienced Unix person who found it missing would say "What on
earth is going on, where is `foo'?", it must be an `important'
package.[1] Other packages without which the system will not run
well or be usable must also have priority `important'. This does
_not_ include Emacs, the X Window System, TeX or any other large
applications. The `important' packages are just a bare minimum
  of commonly-expected and necessary tools.

I wouldn't place any of Boost in that category. In fact, I wouldn't
place "aptitude" in that category, either.

So while raising Boost will "solve" the issue, it seems to me to be
a recipe for runaway priority inflation.

Is there any central authority to vet priority changes?

Thanks,
-Steve

please share the exact versions of the package and its dependencies you
are trying to install. I'm especially curious to see your sources.list,
potentially your /etc/apt/preferences (if non-empty/missing).

is this stable? the dependency indicates that the package was built
against a copy of libjack not in testing/unstable.

Bug#589227: cpmtools: possible FHS violation, as fsck.cpm and mkfs.cpm are not in /sbin

You pose an interesting question. After thinking about it a bit, here's
my current take on it.

I interpret "corresponding subsystem is installed" to mean that the
kernel knows how to mount and use the filesystem type in question. To
the best of my knowledge, that is not true for CP/M filesystems, which I
believe can only be manipulated from user space and not directly
mounted.

Also, the overall definition for /usr/sbin in the FHS says "This
directory contains any non-essential binaries used exclusively by the
system administrator." That is clearly not true in this case.

All this suggests to me that leaving the two executables in question in
the /usr/bin directory where they are now is a better choice than moving
them.

> I don't judge whether /sbin is really a better location, just

No problem. It's an interesting question. Do you agree with my
analysis?

Bdale

Bug#589230: lustre-utils: possible FHS violation, as mkfs.lustre is not in /sbin

2010-07-15 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer
Package: lustre-utils
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 9.1.1

Hi.

I might have spotted a policy violation here (therefore the sevirity serious).

Policy section 9.1.1. specifies:
"The location of all installed files and directories must comply with the
Filesystem Hierarchy
Standard (FHS), version 2.3, with the exceptions noted below,..."

The FHS in turn specifies:
"The following files, or symbolic links to files, must be in /sbin if the
corresponding subsystem is installed:
...
fsck.*
mkfs.*
"
(see http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#SPECIFICOPTIONS8).

As far as I can tell this is not the case, right?

I also do not see any exception for this in section 9.1.1.

I don't judge whether /sbin is really a better location, just wanted to
bring this to your
attention :)

Cheers,
Chris.

Hi.

Policy section 9.1.1. specifies:
"The location of all installed files and directories must comply with the

Precisely! I just found out that this is the problem and came here to

Bug#589064: petsc: FTBFS: Unable to apply patches

2010-07-15 Thread Adam C Powell IV
Hello Sandro and Cyril,

This is really bizarre, I've never seen anything like it.

The patches apply, and upstream-p2 modifies TAGS.
Then the clean target reverses the patches -- but upstream-p2 does *not*
modify TAGS! It looks like it modifies everything else.
Then the patches apply again, but TAGS is modified, so the patch fails.

Ah, I think dh_clean is removing the TAGS files in .pc, so quilt forgets
that they're part of the patches, and they don't get reverted. I think
I know how to deal with this.

Thanks,
Adam

Seems to be the case. It's a bug in either gobject-introspection or
python2.6, though =(

Bug#571255: udev_151-3_amd64 failed at apt-get install

2010-07-15 Thread Toon Moene

> There is a trivial way around this, prominently displayed in the error
> message. So I don't know what you are talking about.

Sure - unfortunately that doesn't work if you come from Lenny - you
cannot install linux-image-2.32-5 without udev-158-1, and trying to
install udev-158-1 tells you your running kernel (which should be
immaterial, if you're rebooting after install, which I always do - even
if no kernel upgrade is involved) is too old.

How do Debian developers work around this ?

Hi Sylvain,

Thanks for your report. I'm lowering the gravity of the report because this
issue does not "break the whole system". Only pyro itself is concerned.

We'll see what to do with this incompatibility asap.

Package: gnome-shell
Version: 2.31.2-1
Severity: important

After installing gnome-shell from experimental (2.31.2-3), it would not start.
It complained about a missing clutter symbol. So I manually installed a newer
clutter from experimental (1.2.8-1), and tried again. This time it complained
about a missing meta_somethign symbol. So I went back and manually installed
the version of mutter from experimental (2.31.2-3). After doing that, things
worked.

Note that installing gnome-shell did pull in gir1.0-mutter-2.31, but it didn't
pull in the newer mutter itself. I suspect there's some missing dependencies
somewhere.

Did you build against libicu44 or libicu42? I had a quick look at the
build logs a few days ago and it seemed the build worked with 42 but
failed with 44.

Bug#589172: pyro 4 should not replace pyro 3

2010-07-15 Thread Sylvain Thénault
Package: pyro
Version: 3.9.1-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Pyro 4 is a *rewrite* of pyro 3. It's experimental, incompatible,
and has yet no utilities such as pyro-ns, pyro-nsd & co.

apt-get upgrade should definitly no upgrade to pyro 4 on system
expecting to use pyro 3.

Moreover, pyro 3 has been removed from the sid archive, which makes it
boring to go back (I had to download the .deb from the squeeze archive)

Bug#589170: python-camelot: file conflict over /u/s/pyshared/example/settings.py

2010-07-15 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: python-camelot
Version: 10.07.02-c2-2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 6.6(4)

python-camelot installs a lot of files under /usr/share/pyshared that
I suspect would be more appropriately placed under /usr/share/doc (and
perhaps split out into a separate package, but that's another matter).
Moreover, one of these misplaced files (.../example/settings.py) leads
to a de facto conflict with python-django-debug-toolbar (which likely
shouldn't be shipping it either, but python-camelot is newer and
places much more cruft under /usr/share/pyshared, so it's getting the
bug).

Could you please clean the packaging up?

Thanks!

Funny... I wonder if the compiler is being somehow more strict on the
buildds and your machine, because it obviously built fine for me... let
me see if I can reproduce this.

After quite some sweat, here's the culprit: buildds override apt config
to use sources.buildd.list as sources file name.

Because of that, the libept test suite wasn't able to find its own
sources.list, and the tests were running with no packages file
available, and failing spectacularly.

Now I uploaded 1.0.3 which explicitly set the sources file name in the
test suite, and it all works. It's finally time to close this bug.

Ciao,

Enrico

On the contrary: your change is nice - please do upload without delay.

You are however much encouraged to apply the change directly to our git
(debcheckout should work) - it is maintained in collab-maint so you
should have write access already.

I would adopt and release myself if I wasn't too busy right now on an
exciting job in Turin, Italy.

See you soon in New York, I hope,

I am not sure but I do think I did a dist-upgrade in sid and installd
grub2 to replace the old solution. I haven't used the computer for some
days now

but it can not boot anymore.

Right after "Welcome to grub!" it drops to the grub rescue prompt.
I can list my drives with ls.
I can set root to hd0,1 and list the file system for / as far as I can
tell.

When doing insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod I get the grub_xputs error above.

What to do?

found some livecd suggestion at #grub at freenode and will try to test

I did manage to get a CD to burn the Live image of ubuntu to and using
that to create the chroot as described in the link I found earlier. It
all worked after that.

Hi,
the following issues have been reported against bugzilla:

http://www.bugzilla.org/security/3.2.6/

CVE-2010-1204 has minor impact, we don't need a DSA for it.
If necessary, it can still be fixed in a stable point update.

CVE-2010-0180 doesn't affect the Squeeze or Lenny version,
since our Bugzilla is too old.

Which brings me to another issue: We should really release Bugzilla
3.2 with Squeeze? 3.2 will be end-of-lifed when Bugzilla 4.0
is released, which should happen in the not too distinct future
and years before the end of the Squeeze support time frame.

Cheers,
Moritz

Is there a specific reason, why this bug is open, if the problem doesn't
exist?

Okay, there is still:

yes, it was provided by python-xml that is now remove: please complain
with the former maintainer (I'm not) in case you still need it, asking
for a solution.

again, your trying to install python from testing; python in stable is
2.5 while in testing is 2.6, that generates a conflict with
python2.5-only pacakges like python-xml. There's nothing you can do
about it.

Do you mean that also xbel-utils will stop working in unstable Debian
and later on testing and stable, too?

> > APT policy: (1001, 'testing'), (990, 'stable'), (500,
> > 'testing-proposed-updates'), (500, 'proposed-updates'), (101, 'unstable')

> (testing and then unstable).

I have released my apt-configs here:

http://iki.fi/juhtolv/configs/debian/apt/

After downgrading umpteen packages I was able to install xbel-utils back.

I swithced my configs to unstable (as seen in that file
000README.txt). Then I gave commands "aptitude update" and "aptitude -Z -V
-f -D -v -v -v -v -v --without-recommends dist-upgrade". This is what
happened then:

The following packages will be upgraded:
  adesklets [0.6.1-5 -> 0.6.1-5+b1]  gdesklets [0.36.1-3 ->
  0.36.1-4+b1]  gimp [2.6.8-1 -> 2.6.10-1] <+12.3kB>  gimp-data
  [2.6.8-3 -> 2.6.10-1] <+1,790kB>
  libgimp2.0 [2.6.8-3+b1 -> 2.6.10-1] <+119kB>  python [2.5.4-9 ->
  2.6.5-7] <+106kB>  python-minimal [2.6.5-5 -> 2.6.5-7] <+57.3kB>
  python-sqlalchemy [0.6.1-1 -> 0.6.2-1] <+729kB>  xgridfit [2.1-1 ->
  2.2a-1] <+90.1kB>
The following packages are RECOMMENDED but will NOT be installed:
  python-sqlalchemy-ext (R: python-sqlalchemy)
9 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not
upgraded.
Need to get 3,273kB/21.2MB of archives. After unpacking 2,904kB will
be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
python-xml: Depends: python (< 2.6) but 2.6.5-7 is to be installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

 Remove the following packages:
1) python-xml
2) xbel-utils

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]

Thanks for fixing the bug so fast. And to clarify the not distributable
part: By not complying with the licensing terms, we also don't have the
license to distribute it.

I think you're not getting the big picture here...

python-xml has been removed from unstable/testing so it lives only in
stable, where python 2.5 is the default. No-one will update it to make
it work with 2.6 as default (given it's not part of python core).

You have quite a broken setup here I found no reason to have teh
stable suite while you use (and prefer) the under-development suites
(testing and then unstable).

you have installed python from testing, so you broke your machine and
the packages that expect 2.5 as default, such as python-xml.

Your bugs are invalid, hence I'm closing them.

Package: python-xml
Version: 0.8.4-10.1+lenny1
Severity: grave

The latest version of this package depends on "python (< 2.6)".
Unfortunately Debian already has a version of Python that breaks that rule.

A logfile would be much more useful. The strace just shows that keepalived
got started.

Ok, yes I only checked on 'fresh' unstable installation, without the
upgrade path lenny->squeeze, and there is. With the comment of Sven
then you are correct!

So please ignore my comments.

It would be fine if there was a postinst that converts an existing
/usr/share/doc/klibc-utils directory to a symlink, which is necessary on
upgrades (dpkg never does that by itself). Here's an untested example
that should do the trick:

--8<---cut here---start->8---
#!/bin/sh
set -e

if [ ! -L /usr/share/doc/klibc-utils ] && \
   [ -e /usr/share/doc/klibc-utils ]; then
rmdir /usr/share/doc/klibc-utils
ln -sf libklibc /usr/share/doc/klibc-utils
fi
--8<---cut here---end--->8---

Cheers,
   Sven
