Bug#603898: package misses copyright information

2010-11-17 Thread Ana Guerrero
Package: adept
Version: 3.0~beta7.2+nmu1+b1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch

Hi!

While checking the QA status of adept (see bug #542232), I discovered adept
is missing the information from where the upstream sources were obtained in the
debian/copyright file, this is required by Policy 12.5.
In Debian natives packages, this information is usually skip but you can find
the sources easily inside the Debian infrastructure (alioth, git.d.o, svn.d.o,
etc).
This does not seem to be the case with adept, upstream page seems
to be at http://web.mornfall.net/adept.html including a darcs repository.

What dietlibc version was used to build the binaries? Does it have
http://people.linux-vserver.org/~dhozac/p/m/delta-dietdirent-fix01.diff
applied? IIRC this was one way that problem exhibited itself.

nvidia-graphics-drivers-legacy-71xx would have had a similar problem, in
that it has no upgrade path, since there's no version of those drivers
available from NVIDIA that work with the latest server. I hadn't thought
about that. But it looks like it's not a problem since that wasn't in
stable, nor was nvidia-graphics-drivers-legacy (which predates it). We
got lucky there.

Once nvidia-graphics-drivers{,-legacy-173xx,-legacy-96xx} all propagate,
we have a defined upgrade path for everything that was in lenny, I think.

At some point, we probably do want to push people more towards nouveau,
but the NVIDIA drivers still support some stuff that nouveau doesn't even
on GPUs that nouveau supports.

Bug#603882: util-vserver: startup script breaks boot (on sparc)

2010-11-17 Thread Ivan Jager
Package: util-vserver
Version: 0.30.216-pre2864-2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

I'm trying to switch to vservers from openvz because openvz support (for
sparc) got silently dropped in Lenny. After installing
linux-image-2.6.32-5-vserver-sparc64, during boot I get an endless
stream of "lstat(): No such file or directory"

Fortunately, I was able to ssh in and found /etc/init.d/util-vserver was
running setattr. Running setattr with the same arguments also produces
the endless stream of errors. strace shows that it is trying to stat ""
a lot. I found I could reproduce the stream of errors as a normal user
by running showattr without arguments instead. I guess it's something in
the common code that is shared between the two.

I rebuild with debugging and got a backtrace:
#0 0x00010e88 in lstat ()
#1 0x000102c4 in iterateFilesystem (path=0x11730 ".") at src/fstool.c:89

(gdb) frame 1

Obviously ent is bogus. The things that look like filenames inside
d_name are files in the working directory. (In this case
util-vserver-0.30.216-pre2864)

I tried to reproduce the problem with a small program that just did
opendir and readir with printf, but that worked fine, so I'm not sure
where the problem lies exactly. My best current guess is that either
something is overwriting the data from opendir before readdir gets
called, or somehow an incompatible opendir and readdir are getting
linked in. (Is that possible?) I haven't looked at the internals of how
opendir and readdir work yet, so I don't really know.

I tried installing util-vserver on a lenny machine, which installed
version 0.30.216~r2772-6, but that version does not have this problem.
I also tried transplaning the binary from 0.30.216-pre2864-2 to the
lenny box, and then I do get the endless stream of errors.

So, to reproduce in a way that is easy to debug:
install util-vserver-0.30.216-pre2864-2 on a sparc system and run
showattr.Make sure the startup script won't run or that you're not
running a vserver kernel to avoid setattr being run at startup.

To reproduce in a way that will leave you without a login prompt:
install util-vserver-0.30.216-pre2864-2 and boot a sparc system into a
kernel with vserver support.

Sorry I didn't get around to testing vservers earlier. I was hoping
openvz support might come back.

Thanks,
Ivan

Ok, thanks for the rapid response :) Interestingly I've been
working on the ia32-libs issue to get fglrx-driver unblocked as well.

Right, the problem that had is because the version of
nvidia-graphics-drivers-legacy-96xx which works properly with the squeeze
Xorg server still hasn't migrated to squeeze. The upgrade should work
fine with the version in unstable.

Reassigning this bug and updating the version information accordingly,
since this bug is fixed in unstable. We're just waiting on ia32-libs for
the NVIDIA packages to all migrate to squeeze.

^ correction, that should read "xserver-xorg-nouveau"

Obviously it makes no sense as written.

Bug#603878: nvidia-graphics-drivers: various issues upgrading from lenny's nvidia-*-legacy-96xx

2010-11-17 Thread Michael Gilbert
package: nvidia-graphics-drivers
version: 195.36.24-4
severity: grave

Hi,

After the call for upgrade testing, I just did a lenny-to-squeeze
test on an old system of mine. The nvidia-*-legacy-96xx kernel module
and glx were installed under lenny (to support an old nvidia card that
none of the newer nvidia drivers support). I followed the upgrade
instructions exactly at [0].

After installing the new kernel and udev and rebooting (section 4.5.5),
X was nonworking (since it was using the new kernel and I hadn't built
a new module). So I had to boot into single user mode to complete the
rest of the install.

During the dist-upgrade (section 4.5.6), a lot of xorg drivers and
xorg itself ended up getting removed. After the dist-upgrade, I
manually installed xorg, which removed nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx. After
that X still wouldn't work since I still had the old nvidia-based
xorg.conf. I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and installed
xserver-xorg-nvidia, which fixed all of the problems.

So, I think this could be fixed by either providing an upgrade path
from the legacy drivers to nouveau or by simply telling the user to
remove nvidia-*-legacy-* packages and /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the release
notes.

Setting the severity at grave since this caused all kinds of upgrade
breakage (that a less technically apt user would have a lot of trouble
with), but I will deffer to your judgment on the severity since its so
late in the release process.

Thanks,
Mike

Bug#603752: CVE-2010-4168

2010-11-17 Thread Steven Chamberlain

Hi,

Just thought I'd mention, I had trouble connecting to multiplay servers
*before* I applied this patch, despite the suggestion it 'does not
change network compatibility at all'.

Anyway, I've play-tested it with the patch, which applies cleanly,
except it needed CRLF to LF conversion (fromdos), and a modification to
apply with 'patch -p1' (sed -i 's/src/openttd\/src/'). The direct URL
to it is:

http://security.openttd.org/en/patch/28.patch

It seems to me that there are several other derivative works of the
Debian Open Use Logo with “Debian”

still present in desktop-base_6.0.0.tar.gz.

Here's a list of what I found with a complete review of the package:

./backgrounds/moreblue-orbit-grub.svg.tar.bz2

./splashy/spacefun/error.png
./splashy/spacefun/go.png
./usplash/moreblue-orbit/cmap.gif
./usplash/moreblue-orbit/background.svg

All these images include a “Debian” text clearly derived from
 and have to be modified
in order to become DFSG-free...

I am therefore reopening the bug.
I hope this issue may be fixed soon.

Hello.

I have Debian Squeeze x64 on Fujitsu siemens Esprimo U9200 laptop. I have
just installed Gnome Desktop environment and my NetworkManager applet can't
detect cable connection (Ethernet connection to laptop's port). When I click
to the applet I see under "Wired Network" message: "device not managed".
Still I can manage it with terminal (ifup/ifdown/ifconfig, etc). I've
reinstalled the system twice and the result is the same.

Package: network-manager
Version: 0.7.1-1
Severity: important

The wired network interface isn't managed on a default system (>=squeeze).

As far as i understand, this is because:

On a regular Debian system, the file /etc/network/interfaces contains
| allow-hotplug eth0
| iface eth0 inet dhcp

Also, /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf contains:
| [main]
| plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
|
| [ifupdown]
| managed=false

I don't know if the right way to solve the issue is to:
 1. comment-out the [eth0] entry in /e/n/interfaces
or
 2. set "managed=true" in nm-system-settings.conf
(an kill nm-system-settings or reboot)

Note regarding #1: Every user that upgrade their system from lenny to
squeeze will face this bug. Do you think it's possible to address
this problem (dispaying note or whatever).

Thanks,

Changing "Depends: emacsen-common" to "Pre-Depends: emacsen-common"
seems to solve the problem. Needs some further investigation
before uploading that patch.

Bug#602476: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#602476: policykit-1: FTBFS on kfreebsd-*: sys/signalfd.h: No such file or directory

2010-11-17 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Michael Biebl writes:

Hmm. Is signalfd() used by _g_posix_signal_source_new() is a
Linux-only feature? Man page says

VERSIONS
signalfd() is available on Linux since kernel 2.6.22. Working
support is provided in glibc since version 2.8. The signalfd4()
system call (see NOTES) is available on Linux since kernel 2.6.27.

and it is also listed in "Re: Porting upstart to kfreebsd" at

http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-...@lists.debian.org/msg04855.html

under "Linux-specific thing that the current and next versions
use/will use are".

This code did not exist in 0.96-3 so maybe you just need to ask
upstream to think about how they want to this on non-Linux systems?
(I'm assuming this 0.99-1 is not targeting squeeze so we are not in a
hurry.)

It seems to me that there are several other derivative works of the
Debian Open Use Logo with “Debian”

still present in desktop-base_6.0.0.tar.gz.

Here's a list of what I found with a complete review of the package:

./backgrounds/moreblue-orbit-grub.svg.tar.bz2
./backgrounds/gnome-debian-sid-wp.png
./backgrounds/moreblue-orbit-grub.png
./backgrounds/gnome-debian-sid-wp.xcf.gz
./debian-desktop-logo.png
./source/spacefun/splashy.svg
./source/spacefun/grub.svg
./source/spacefun/splash.svg
./splash/spacefun-splash.svg
./splash/gnome-debian-sid-splash.png
./splash/moreblue-orbit-splash.svg.tar.bz2
./splash/gnome-debian-sid-splash.xcf.gz
./grub/spacefun-grub-widescreen.png
./splashy/spacefun/back.png
./splashy/spacefun/error.png
./splashy/spacefun/go.png
./usplash/moreblue-orbit/cmap.gif
./usplash/moreblue-orbit/background.svg

All these images include a “Debian” text clearly derived from
 and have to be modified
in order to become DFSG-free...

I am therefore reopening the bug.
I hope this issue may be fixed soon.

P.S.: Pompee, do you prefer if I set myself as the bug report

Bug#603858: Mount options for proc conflict with /etc/fstab breaking /etc/init.d/mountall.sh

2010-11-17 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.93.4
Severity: critical
File: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init
Tags: patch

Hi,

I recently installed a squeeze system. The generated /etc/fstab
contains the following line:

   #
   proc/proc procdefaults0 0

But in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init you have:

   mount -t proc -o nodev,noexec,nosuid none /proc

This causes mount to return an error when mounting all local
filesystems because "proc" and "none" are different divices and it
can't mount /proc again over an existing mountpoint. The
/etc/init.d/mountall.sh script reports a red FAILED because of that.

Node: /etc/mtab is a link to /proc/mounts here. That might affect this
issue.

Please change the mount command for proc to:

  mount -t proc -o nodev,noexec,nosuid proc /proc

MfG
Goswin

- Create a Squeeze chroot or use a Squeeze installation
- apt-get source ust
- Apply the patch you've referenced
- Set the version to number to "0.5-1+squeeze1" and the "distribution" to
"testing"
- Build and test
- Send the debdiff to this bug and CC debian-rele...@lists.debian.org for review
- Once acked by them, upload
- Rejoice

Cheers,
Moritz

Well, here's what I did:

sudo apt-get install scsh
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Package: postgresql-client
Version: 8.3.12-0lenny1
Severity: serious

During a general conversation about readline licensing, I noticed that psql
links to both libreadline (GPL v2+) and libssl (BSD-like, incompatible with
the GPL), thus ending up with the terms of both licenses applying. My
reasoning is that since the licenses are incompatible with each other, the
binary is technically undistributable. The consensus on #debian-devel was that
this reasoning is correct.

Upstream claims that it should be possible to replace readline with libedit,
and I noticed that libeditline is another option. It would of course be
preferable to use one of those instead of disabling the functionality
completely.

I decided to file this against the version of the package in lenny, since it
in my understanding applies to all versions currently distributed by Debian
(the one in lenny being the oldest).

Package: flashplugin-nonfree
Version: 1:2.8.2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Adobe has again updated their flash player version 10 (now dated Nov. 11, 2010)

Attempting to install gives the following error:

   ERROR: sha512sum rejected install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
More information might be available at:
 http://wiki.debian.org/FlashPlayer

For this package to be usable for any period of time, it needs to not use
a fixed built-in checksum (which I assume is the source of the error).
Otherwise, it could be broken again by Adobe doing a new release the day
after this is fixed, or the day of the next Debian release for that matter.

Possibly it could give a warning on checksum error and allow the user to
decide whether or not to install rather than failing outright. I realize
there are potential problems with this approach too, but the current approach

To be precise, of course "ln -sf dash /bin/sh" is idempotent; it's just that
it's not safe to interrupt it because it works by calling unlink() followed
by symlink(). Sorry for the lack of clarify.

Thanks, this is a good summary.

This was advertised by bash as the way to use dash as /bin/sh for a long
time.

An automagic upgrade is a lovely thing, but for a few reasons this
seems less important than the other issues, especially:

 - it's a noisy failure, not silent breakage.
 - if those diversions were added in order to set dash as /bin/sh,
   it's easy to repair.

> * extending the handling of /bin/sh to include more shells than bash and dash
> - definitely post-squeeze material

That's probably the right choice, since only one person seems to be
working on it. :(

This is a serious regression from lenny. I wish it would be fixed
soon in squeeze-backports at least.

The main component (an upgrade path in bash to remove /bin/sh from its
files list without disturbing the configured shell) has been written
and seems to work fine. See Bug#602483. I have some cosmetic
improvements saved up for that patch but I can't tell if there's any
interest...

To be clear, anyone can help out with this; it does not have to be a
release manager or bash maintainer. A nice first step to work towards
would be a collection of updated packages in experimental, so we can
have people test it.

> * the preinst isn't idempotent
> - from a few quick tests, it looks like this could be resolved by changing
> the execution order to "cp, ln, divert" rather than "divert, cp, ln"; I
> may have missed something, however

Technically one would need

# nothing except dash prerm seems to care about the .distrib
# file, so this is relatively safe.
cp -dp $dfile $distrib

# ln -sf is not idempotent, though ln -s to temporary + mv is.
ln -sf $ltarget $tmpfile
mv -f $tmpfile $dfile

dpkg-divert --package dash --divert $distrib --add $dfile

The window when this can happen is very short, and the failure modes
are not so bad (except if ln -sf is interrupted in the middle. That
one would mean no /bin/sh).

That is not a big problem. dash can't be reinstalled in a situation
where the installation of libc is damaged, either. In practice what
you would do is, from an open shell,

 1. Reinstall bash.
 2. Reinstall dash.

and all is well again.

I think this could be done safely, but the effect on maintainability
just doesn't seem worth it.

Ouch, right. Will take a look at it, though given that this is a
development release it's not that high on my agenda - I guess I will get
around to fix it for the next upstream release of 1.9.3, whenever that
might be.

That's because the editor script originally was named wesnoth_editor by
upstream. wesnoth-nolog is a wrapper script that redirects output to
/dev/null. They are historically named that way so I won't change that
part.

> By the way, why is it installing in /usr/games instead of /usr/bin?

That's part of the FHS. No games are meant to install into the regular
/usr/bin path so they don't clutter the path for the root account (which
doesn't have /usr/games in its $PATH).

> PS: Thanks for packaging wesnoth, I'm going to have my first try at it

Please notice that wesnoth-1.9 is the development branch and every
update in that version might potentially be incompatible with the former
version, in case of safegames and similar. If you want to take on a
campaign you are well adviced to install wesnoth-1.8 instead and start
from there.

 Thanks,
Rhonda

Right. I could piuparts do that too, though I'm not convinced I should, unless
the notes explicitly say one has to.

Ah. piuparts creates a piuparts-depends-dummy package for the first
installation of the package, for reasons which are hidden in the history of
the project... ;-) This packages has all the depends (and conflicts) of the
package to be tested and is installed with dpkg. Then apt-get install -f is
run... I _assume_ thats why the -f is also used for apt-get dist-upgrade.

This is code I took over from Lars and it's not the only part where I havent
fully understood the reasons behind it. But there is work on it being done:
#588041 #603453

(The master-slave mode of piuparts has another package relationship resolving
mechanism...)

cheers,
Holger

No. The "problem" lies in people adding non-free and contrib to their sources.
So I think apt is actually right in those cases to upgrade to a non-free
alternative. It's the users choice.

Bill, so far you're the only one in #587279 objecting to the clarification
making the what-you-call "strange interpretation" crystal clear (and
following the way it was always handled).

Not necessarily: during an upgrade there are much more constraint to satisfy
that during an installation, as this is the case here.

I do not think it is correct to ever upgrade a free package to a non-free one.
Now, apt is not at fault, the problem rather lie in a strange interpretation of
policy 2.1.2 by some developers. But we cannot ignore the issue either.

Bug#546528: [PATCH] make dash's preinst a C binary

2010-11-17 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Hi,

This bug report seems to have branched in to a couple of issues relating
to dash's use of diversions and its use as /bin/sh, rather than the
original issue of whether the preinst should be moved to something that
doesn't rely on /bin/sh working; some of these should probably be moved
elsewhere:

* handling of local diversions
- already #538822
- as such diversions must have been manually added, for squeeze this may
be a documented upgrade issue (in the release notes)

* extending the handling of /bin/sh to include more shells than bash and dash
- definitely post-squeeze material

* the preinst isn't idempotent
- from a few quick tests, it looks like this could be resolved by changing
the execution order to "cp, ln, divert" rather than "divert, cp, ln"; I
may have missed something, however

That leaves us with the question of what should be done in terms of not
having dash's preinst be a /bin/sh script. I think everyone agrees that
this should be done; the current suggestions appear to be:

* make it a /bin/bash script instead

This is a "no brainer" change in terms of ensuring correctness; no changes
are required to the remainder of the script. It does mean that dash can't
be reinstalled in a situation where the installation of bash is damaged.

* make it a compiled C program

This means that dash can be reinstalled in situations where both bash and
dash are damaged or otherwise unavailable and means dash doesn't require
bash. Both of these are certainly reasonable goals, but this approach is
a more fundamental change and may be more difficult to test, so the
question is whether the potential gains are worth the risk at this stage
of the release process.

The transition to dash-as-bin-sh won't realistically allow users to remove
bash from squeeze systems without both overriding the package manager and
careful consideration of the consequences in any case - bash is still
essential and there are therefore a number of packages which ship
/bin/bash scripts with no dependency (devscripts being an example I know
ottomh).

Regards,

Adam

It is true that anything-el depends on auto-install-el.
I think anything-el doesn't have to depends on auto-instlal.
So, I created a patch.
This problem is solved of the next release.

Thanks. I see kfreebsd-* worked. A few (alpha, amd64, s390) failed for
other reasons, and I had to release 2.5.9 in a hurry to deal with this;
that should clear up all the remaining build failures.

Only if the free package is uninstallable in squeeze, but in this case a
new installation has the same result.
APT will try to fix the free package before it tries to fix the packages
depending on the free one, so the non-free option is still only the fallback.

Or could you provide a case in which it behaves differently?

that should be an error message from APT and I can't trigger this one -
it would be a serious problem if APT would really print that on a normal
dist-upgrade try (without holds of course)…

I wouldn't say force, I would "just" recommend it. Its not a strict
requirement as this specific case is handled by the recommends
which are activated by default. Other cases will lead to the removal
of the offending package, which is awkward, but not fatal as it can
be reinstalled if needed after the upgrade. Also, as said, the notes
already recommend a split upgrade by first 'upgrade' and then
'dist-upgrade' which should take care of getting a new apt & friends
in as well in most (not all) cases.

The general likelihood of this should be relatively low, given that you
need an or-group in a candidate version which if upgraded alone can
be satisfied with an installed package while the candidate of this
package is unsuitable for satisfying it.
Should only happen in <> P.P.S.: Offtopic, but Holger, why does piuparts uses --fix-broken switch?
>
> where do you see this?

"apt-get -yf dist-upgrade" in your steps -- the -f stands for --fix-broken

User upgrades his system and then jabber-server becomes broken. It is
grave severity:

1. When squeeze is released, many people will do like that.

2.2 I added squeeze into sources.list
2.3 I installed jabberd14

I agree, but bug against libidn11 was closed 11 Oct,
Now is 17 Nov, bug is still reproducible. So I think that including
version into depends will solve this problem. Or broken libidn11
must be replaced in debian repos.
Until problem is solved a bug must be opened: the problem is exists
and reproducible.

It fits for testing, but I'm afraid that when squeeze is released
and this problem wont be solved: there is no bugreport which is opened.

It's not an RC bug; at most it is severity important.[1] Secondly,
this bug only occurs if you've managed to only upgrade jabberd14, and
not libidn11. This bug is actually a bug in libidn11, not jabberd14,
which has already been fixed, and the solution is rebuilding
jabberd14, which has (supposedly) already been queued.

As such, there's no point in keeping this bug open at all, once the
build has been queued. I was under the mistaken impression that Julien
was the maintainer (since I didn't bother to check), but that doesn't
change the facts surrounding this bug.

1: important: a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a
package, without rendering it completely unusable to everyone. [See

Probably option c) should be removed. This makes upgrade process much less
predictable.
An secondary issue with option c) is that this can lead apt to upgrade free
packages with non-free packages, if non-free packages are listed as alternative.

Yay.

debian-edu-artwork used to conflict with desktop-base for exactly this reason,
I'll see if there is a better solution though.

I've rechecked YAWS for this vulnerability and found that none of versions
currently in Debian (and also future 1.89) is vulnerable. The vulnerability
is not revealed if YAWS is installed on a Linux system.

So, I'm closing this bug and will notify YAWS authors shortly.
