Bug#607903: Fails to build kernel module: missing dependency on libc6-dev
Hi Russ, On Thu, Dec 23, 2010 at 04:43:35PM -0800, Russ Allbery wrote: fixed 607903 openafs-modules-dkms/1.5.77-1 thanks Phil Miller pmil...@hmc.edu writes: build-essential depends on libc6-dev | libc-dev, and is assumed for building any packages, per Policy 4.2. Yeah, but DKMS modules are something of a special case because the end user isn't building the package. They're just installing a DKMS-enabled package, and the building happens as part of the package installation. That means that the dependencies do need to be there for the compilation to work. DKMS depends on gcc, make | build-essential for that reason. DKMS itself doesn't depend on build-essential because building the average kernel module doesn't require userspace development headers, but OpenAFS is weird. Yes, other packages using kbuild won't need this since they don't use configure and friends. Would be great to have this fixed for squeeze. Cheers, -- Guido This bug has been fixed for a while in Git, but along with other things that aren't suitable for the current deep freeze. (It is fixed in experimental, though, so I'll leave it marked closed but with the correct version information.) But there's an upstream security patch that I need to upload for squeeze anyway, so I'll fix this along with. I should be able to get to that in the next couple of days. -- Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. My main concern is that there seems to be no way for oot modules like the vmware modules to sanely keep in step with the kernel ABI. Upstream doesn't have a notion of kernel ABI, this is left for the distributors to handle. This can only work if changes to the ABI don't get ignored for convenience or any other equally bad reason. Bug#607927: powerpc squeeze CD image fails
Package: debian-cd Severity: serious Hi The creation of the powerpc CD Image currently fails. genoisoimage aborts with a stack trace as can be seen in this log: http://cdbuilder.debian.org/cdimage-log/Csqueezepowerpc Is anyone with access to the build host able to investigate this? AFAICT the failure started with yesterdays build. Is there a way to access old logs on cdbuilder.debian.org? From the build log it seems that the build host is using a locally modified version of genisoimage. Therefore I'm not filing a bug against genisoimage yet. Unfortunately I don't have access to the build machine to investigate this myself. I'm setting the severity to serious as we can't release without a working powerpc CD build and this seems analogous to a FTBS bug. Feel free to downgrade if you disagree. Gaudenz -- Ever tried. I previously didn't have any problem using that kernel, but after upgrading to the latest Intel driver, the next time I booted I no longer had a working X. The display went blank and stayed that way, though the backlight stayed on. I also could not VT switch back to a text console. I rebooted into single-user mode, and captured the log file, included below where Xorg.0.log would normally appear. It looks like the intel driver no longer decided it can drive my graphics card. Given that the most recent version of the driver changed the probe logic, that could make sense. As far as I know, I *think* this kernel I built has KMS support; I've attached the kernel config file (produced by make localmodconfig), in case it lacks something important that the Intel driver requires. *Something* must have gone wrong, because if I boot into the older kernel then X comes up just fine. In any case, if the Intel driver somehow decided that it couldn't drive my video card because it didn't think it had modesetting, that still shouldn't have wedged my system by refusing to fail or VT switch, or bring up the usual dialog for when X keeps failing. Bug#545625: fix for FTBFS
This fixes the FTBFS of 9.6.1-1 for me, at least on i386 and amd64. A similar fix (4 lines) seems to work for 9.8.4-2, but this never made it to testing (From looking at the logs, from more or less the same bug). A TPU upload of 9.6.1-1squeeze1 would require removing 9.6.1 sparc from unstable. A TPU upload 9.8.4-3 would require sid-removals of sparc, hppa, mips, mipsel, s390 and ia64. Bug#607921: [Pkg-freevo-maint] Bug#607921: freevo: (unowned) files in /home (after purge (policy 6.8))
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 tag 607921 +wontfix thanks Dear Holger, here is the situation. When you install the package 'freevo' it sets up your PC to be a PVR. It sets some services to be automatically started at boot, such as the TV recorder and the main GUI. All services are ran as user 'freevo'. It sets up a space where video and music can be stored, and TV programs recorded, as user 'freevo'. Then users (*) can indeed record TV shows in the directory /home/freevo/recordings . So I do not find it reasonable to delete these directories when the 'freevo' package is purged. Now, I have one PC that is dedicated to be freevo PVR. The directories you list below contain ~470GB of audio/video I have patiently recorded in over 5 years from TV and my camera/videocamera and other sources. - From time to time, I do prepare new 'freevo' packages, and then I either try to upgrade my freevo box from old version, or purge the old version and then install the new. If 'freevo' would delete these directories when I purge it, then I would be very unhappy by now. If another user is using freevo as I do, and he would for any reason decide to purge 'freevo' and it would delete these directories then the user would come to my place with a very large and spiky clue-bat. Do you agree with the above? As per the choice of directories... does it make any major difference whether they are under /home or under /var or anywhere alse ? Also do not forget that these can be changed by the debconf interface . Anyway if you really do not like /home and have very good reasons to think they should by default stay elsewhere I can change the default. BTW, what 'freevo' is doing is similar to what mysql does: by default, mysql-server-5.0 will not delete the databases on package purge (unless the user uses debconf to set the key postrm_remove_databases to true) a. ps (*) currently TV recording need some manual config tweaking; but as TV are going digital, I hope we will make freevo autodetect the needed configurations, so that users will be able to record TV as soon as they install 'freevo' and plug in a TV digital receiver (there is already a lot of progress in this respect) Il 24/12/2010 12:46, Holger Levsen ha scritto: Package: freevo Version: 1.9.0-7 Severity: serious User: debian...@lists.debian.org Usertags: piuparts piuparts.d.o Hi, during a test with piuparts I noticed your package left unowned files on the system after purge, which is a violation of policy 6.8: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-removedetails From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...): 1m15.3s ERROR: FAIL: Package purging left files on system: /home/freevo not owned /home/freevo/audio not owned /home/freevo/audio/.placeholder not owned /home/freevo/cache not owned /home/freevo/cache/.placeholder not owned /home/freevo/image not owned /home/freevo/image/.placeholder not owned /home/freevo/log not owned /home/freevo/log/.placeholdernot owned /home/freevo/recordings not owned /home/freevo/recordings/.placeholder not owned /home/freevo/static not owned /home/freevo/static/.placeholder not owned /home/freevo/video not owned /home/freevo/video/.placeholder not owned If your package had only left files in /var/log after purge, I would have filed this as important. The problem I found against fdisk is that when using large disks (i.e., disks with more than 4096 sectors per cylinder), the volhdr partition is incorrectly sized because it is marked as starting and ending on cylinder 0. When having this specific case, this is what happen: Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sda (SGI disk label): 255 heads, 63 sectors, 8941 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes - partitions - Pt#Device Info Start End Sectors Id System - Bootinfo - Bootfile: /unix - Directory Entries - 0: arcbootsector4 size 72492 Command (m for help): n Partition number (1-16): 1 Attempting to generate entire disk entry automatically. First cylinder (1-0): 0 Value out of range. First cylinder (1-0): 2001 Value out of range. First cylinder (1-0): ^C As you may see, once the first partition has been created, fdisk will automatically create partitions 9 and 11, but it will wrongly set the end boundary of volhdr. Starting with this error, it is not possible to add any new partition, because the accepted cylinder range would be 1-0. Please find attached a solution for this bug. This solution raise the volhdr size of 4096 up to the first cylinder boundary. If the boundary is less than 4096 then nothing is changed. A log is being saved in /var/log/fsck/checkfs if that location is writable Give root password for maintenance. At this point, I can run mount -av; exit 0 and the system will boot normally. I will attach fstab and /var/log/fsck/checkfs for your diagnostic purposes. It is rather annoying that there is no way to tell exactly which filesystem caused the problem given the above output. Examining the output in that log, it appears it is running fsck -C -R -A -a. I can reproduce the problem at will by running that command in the maintenance shell. I ran fsck -C -R -A -a -s -V in the maintenance shell, and determined that the problem was with: fsck.vfat -a /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Apple_iPod...-part2 You will see that this filesystem is marked user, noauto in fstab and ought not to be checked by fsck at boot time. It never was until recently, either. On a lark, I changed the pass number in fstab to 0. That fixed the issue. However, this change which can render a system unbootable ought to, at minimum, be detected and warned about in a preinst. Better yet, it should never attempt to fsck a noauto filesystem. If it really must, an error to do so ought not be fatal to the boot process. I have a $HOME mounted with pam-encfs. After the update I was not able to login anymore. The problem is that pam-encfs uses allow_root as default. But after the update any use of allow_root, allow_other or - --public will result in a broken system where the mount just hangs forever (Until a long timeout I think). But removing that option is not the whole way. It gives me back the capability to log in but locks seems to not working anymore and of course root cannot access the $HOME and so daemons cannot also (Like sshd to check the authorized_keys). The last issue with the new version is that I am not able to umount shares with fusermount -u. I get a permission denied. Bug#601220: orphaning noip2? (was: Re: Bug#601220: noip2: abuse of debconf)
On 12/25/2010 08:21 AM, Joost van Baal wrote: Hi, Andres Mejia wrote: snip this package should be orphaned. snip Is Avi Rozen no longer interested in working on the noip2 Debian package? Not really. I'm still using no-ip.com services, but I've recently switched to using ddclient as the update client. As for the current bug, I'd like to point out that noip2 configuration and runtime state has always been kept in a binary configuration file. This doesn't match the Debian policy, and the current abuse of debconf is the result of a our deliberate attempt to workaround it. Cheers, Avi If so, it should indeed get orphaned.
