Bug#607903: Fails to build kernel module: missing dependency on libc6-dev

Yeah, but DKMS modules are something of a special case because the end
user isn't building the package. They're just installing a DKMS-enabled
package, and the building happens as part of the package installation.
That means that the dependencies do need to be there for the compilation
 to work.

DKMS depends on gcc, make | build-essential for that reason.

DKMS itself doesn't depend on build-essential because building the average
kernel module doesn't require userspace development headers, but OpenAFS
 is weird.

Yes, other packages using kbuild won't need this since they don't use
configure and friends. Would be great to have this fixed for squeeze.
Cheers,

This bug has been fixed for a while in Git, but along with other things
that aren't suitable for the current deep freeze. (It is fixed in
experimental, though, so I'll leave it marked closed but with the correct
version information.) But there's an upstream security patch that I need
to upload for squeeze anyway, so I'll fix this along with. I should be
able to get to that in the next couple of days.

Yes, then it is a bug in *these* packages, but not in tex-common
or texlive-base.

If the package uses dh_installtex all will be done with triggers
and within tex-common, so no /u/l/s/texmf/ls-R file is generated.

If the admin generates ls-R file there by calling mktexlsr by hadn,
then by policy we are not allowed to remove that one.

That does not provide any information but the fact that calling
mktexlsr
without any argumetn creates /u/l/s/texmf/ls-R, which I already know.

I am reducing the severity of this bug, as I don't see anything
related to what is really a problem.

Please raise it again if you think this is still a bug of tex-common.

Best wishes

The /etc/init.d/halt script calls /etc/init.d/ups-monitor to cut the power of
the UPS device in the case of powerloss. This file is present in lenny version
of nut but not in squeeze. If I am not wrong, this implies that the UPS device
is not shutdown, which in turn avoids booting when the power returns. I think
that the problem can be solved by linking /etc/init.d/ups-monitor to
/etc/init.d/nut, but I'm not sure if that is according to debian policies.

Package: fai-setup-storage
Version: 3.4.6
Severity: serious
Justification: setup-storage is unusable

setup-storage as shipped in 3.4.6 will fail with the following error:

Compilation failed in require at /usr/sbin/setup-storage line 92.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/setup-storage line 92.
Global symbol $needs_resize requires explicit package name at
usr/share/fai/setup-storage//Commands.pm line 911.

This problem is caused by an incomplete merge I did in preparation of 3.4.6.
Will be fixed in trunk in a few moments, but requires another update to the
stable branch.

Hi there.

There's a new upstream release that fixes YT broken API, once again :-(

On the other hand, as suggested, I'll also support the call about asking
Debian Release to make a freeze exception on this, once it has
demonstrated during a reasonable time it's stability.

While most of them were just backported from your git repo, I am a bit
concerned about linux-markers one, and I'm seeking your comment.
The author (Timo, CC:ed here) previously tried to contact you, but
 mails were bouncing.

Patch looks good, and markers were really removed in 2.6.32, so I'm
inclined to apply this, but I'd like to hear your opinion before that.

I'd also like to raise the urgent flag here, as the release is
approaching and I'd like not to miss it.

 Cheers, Luca

I'll add a removal hint for this package, unless it's fixed in the

Bug#607925: ndoutils-nagios3-mysql: MySQL database schema is not updated when upgrading to 1.4b9

2010-12-24 Thread Konstantin Khomoutov
Package: ndoutils-nagios3-mysql
Version: 1.4b9-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After upgrading a server from Lenny to Squeeze, ndo2db attempts to insert
records in its MySQL database started to fail -- in the /var/log/messages
we see (lines wrapped for readability purposes):

Dec 24 16:19:06 icarus ndo2db: Error: mysql_query() failed for 'INSERT

Dec 24 16:19:06 icarus ndo2db: mysql_error: 'Unknown column
'long_output' in 'field list''

In the upstream changelog for the 1.4b9 version, we see this line:

- Support for long performance data

which seems to correlate with the name of the missing column.
Further exploration shows that this really corresponds to the
integration of the patch http://tracker.nagios.org/view.php?id=18
which, among other things, modifies five tables adding one extra
column to each of them.

Ideally, this schema change should be handled automatically when
upgrading the package, or at least a bold note should be put into
NEWS.Debian so that the administrator is set aware of the problem.

Bug#607927: powerpc squeeze CD image fails

2010-12-24 Thread Gaudenz Steinlin
Package: debian-cd
Severity: serious

Hi

The creation of the powerpc CD Image currently fails. genoisoimage
aborts with a stack trace as can be seen in this log:
http://cdbuilder.debian.org/cdimage-log/Csqueezepowerpc

Is anyone with access to the build host able to investigate this?
AFAICT the failure started with yesterdays build. Is there a way to
access old logs on cdbuilder.debian.org?

From the build log it seems that the build host is using a locally
modified version of genisoimage. Therefore I'm not filing a bug
against genisoimage yet.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the build machine to investigate
this myself.

I'm setting the severity to serious as we can't release without a
working powerpc CD build and this seems analogous to a FTBS bug. Feel
free to downgrade if you disagree.

Yup, it will be fixed for squeeze. I have another upstream update that I
need to get in as well and am just discussing with upstream about what the

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.13.0-4
Severity: normal

Hi,

Since the last upgrade (2:2.13.0-2 - 2:2.13.0-4), X is unable to start
because the driver does not detect the video card (see the attached
log).
X starts normally with the vesa driver.

I don't know what additional information would be useful, so please
don't hesitate to ask for details.

Regards,

  Matteo

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.13.0-4
Severity: important

I currently have a bleeding-edge kernel from one of the wireless
repositories installed in order to try to deal with another bug. I
previously didn't have any problem using that kernel, but after
upgrading to the latest Intel driver, the next time I booted I no longer
had a working X. The display went blank and stayed that way, though the
backlight stayed on. I also could not VT switch back to a text console.

I rebooted into single-user mode, and captured the log file, included
below where Xorg.0.log would normally appear. It looks like the intel
driver no longer decided it can drive my graphics card. Given that the
most recent version of the driver changed the probe logic, that could
make sense.

As far as I know, I *think* this kernel I built has
KMS support; I've attached the kernel config file (produced by
make localmodconfig), in case it lacks something important that the
Intel driver requires. *Something* must have gone wrong, because
if I boot into the older kernel then X comes up just fine.

In any case, if the Intel driver somehow decided that it couldn't drive
my video card because it didn't think it had modesetting, that still
shouldn't have wedged my system by refusing to fail or VT switch, or
bring up the usual dialog for when X keeps failing.

Thanks,
Josh Triplett

My system was fine with the previous driver - now without an xorg.conf, X
instead loads Vesa instead of Intel. With xorg.conf it refuses to load anything
saying no screens found. modeset 1 or modeset 0 makes no difference.

Bug#545625: fix for FTBFS

2010-12-24 Thread David Bremner

This fixes the FTBFS of 9.6.1-1 for me, at least on i386 and amd64. A
similar fix (4 lines) seems to work for 9.8.4-2, but this never made it
to testing (From looking at the logs, from more or less the same bug).
A TPU upload of 9.6.1-1squeeze1 would require removing 9.6.1 sparc from
unstable. A TPU upload 9.8.4-3 would require sid-removals of sparc,
hppa, mips, mipsel, s390 and ia64.

Bug#607945: sbuild: can haz I entropy?

2010-12-24 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Package: sbuild
Version: 0.60.7-1
Severity: serious
Justification: buildds usually lack mice to play with to generate entropy.

Dear Santa Claus,

can I haz entropy plz? sbuild seems to need it suddenly, which comes
like a big unpleasant surprise:

| Not enough random bytes available. Please do some other work to give
| the OS a chance to collect more entropy! (Need 277 more bytes)

It's a bit late in the Christmas gift release process, but hopefully
you'll make it in time.

Thank you!

KiBi.

Bug#607921: [Pkg-freevo-maint] Bug#607921: freevo: (unowned) files in /home (after purge (policy 6.8))

2010-12-24 Thread A Mennucc
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Dear Holger,

here is the situation. When you install the package 'freevo' it sets up
your PC to be a PVR. It sets some services to be automatically started
at boot, such as the TV recorder and the main GUI. All services are ran
as user 'freevo'. It sets up a space where video and music can be
stored, and TV programs recorded, as user 'freevo'. Then users (*) can
indeed record TV shows in the directory /home/freevo/recordings . So I
do not find it reasonable to delete these directories when the 'freevo'
package is purged.

Now, I have one PC that is dedicated to be freevo PVR. The directories
you list below contain ~470GB of audio/video I have patiently recorded
in over 5 years from TV and my camera/videocamera and other sources.
- From time to time, I do prepare new 'freevo' packages, and then I
either try to upgrade my freevo box from old version, or purge the old
version and then install the new. If 'freevo' would delete these
directories when I purge it, then I would be very unhappy by now.

If another user is using freevo as I do, and he would for any reason
decide to purge 'freevo' and it would delete these directories then the
user would come to my place with a very large and spiky clue-bat.

Do you agree with the above?

As per the choice of directories... does it make any major difference
whether they are under /home or under /var or anywhere alse ? Also do
not forget that these can be changed by the debconf interface . Anyway
if you really do not like /home and have very good reasons to think they
should by default stay elsewhere I can change the default.

BTW, what 'freevo' is doing is similar to what mysql does: by default,
mysql-server-5.0 will not delete the databases on package purge (unless
the user uses debconf to set the key postrm_remove_databases to true)

a.

ps (*) currently TV recording need some manual config tweaking; but as
TV are going digital, I hope we will make freevo autodetect the needed
configurations, so that users will be able to record TV as soon as they
install 'freevo' and plug in a TV digital receiver (there is already a
lot of progress in this respect)

 Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package left unowned files on the
system after purge, which is a violation of policy 6.8:

 http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-removedetails

From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...):

If your package had only left files in /var/log after purge, I would have
filed this as important. But as your package creates /home/freevo (WTF?!),
I'm filing this as it is.

 See http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#HOMEUSERHOMEDIRECTORIES
/home is a fairly standard concept, but it is clearly a site-specific
filesystem. The setup will differ from host to host. Therefore, no program
 should rely on this location.

 cheers,
   Holger

Yesterday I tried the d-i rc1 for lenny on a silicon graphics O2 (a
complete report is available as Debian bug #510060).

The problem I found against fdisk is that when using large disks (i.e.,
disks with more than 4096 sectors per cylinder), the volhdr partition is
incorrectly sized because it is marked as starting and ending on
cylinder 0. When having this specific case, this is what happen:

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sda (SGI disk label): 255 heads, 63 sectors, 8941 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

- partitions -

First cylinder (1-8940, default 1):

 Last cylinder (1-8940, default 8940): 2000

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sda (SGI disk label): 255 heads, 63 sectors, 8941 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

- partitions -

Value out of range.
First cylinder (1-0): 0

First cylinder (1-0): 2001

First cylinder (1-0): ^C

As you may see, once the first partition has been created, fdisk will
automatically create partitions 9 and 11, but it will wrongly set the
end boundary of volhdr. Starting with this error, it is not possible to
add any new partition, because the accepted cylinder range would be
1-0.

Please find attached a solution for this bug. This solution raise the
volhdr size of 4096 up to the first cylinder boundary. If the boundary
is less than 4096 then nothing is changed.

If you like the fix and will accept this patch, please add this note to
the changelog:

 * fix of mips related bug, dedicate to ths.

Package: util-linux
Version: 2.16.2-0
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

The behavior I describe started after a recent sid upgrade on at least
three distinct systems.

Follows is my retyping the information that appears on the console on
one of them:

Checking file systems...fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16.2
/dev/sda1: clean...
/sbin/fsck.xfs: XFS file system.
/dev/mapper/MASS1-home: clean...
/dev/mapper/crypt-home: clean...
/sbin/fsck.xfs: XFS file system.
open: No such file or directory
dosfsck 3.0.7, 24 Dec 2009, FAT32, LFN
fsck died with exit status 6
failed (code 6)
File system check failed. A log is being saved in
/var/log/fsck/checkfs if that location is writable
Give root password for maintenance.

At this point, I can run mount -av; exit 0 and the system will boot
normally.

I will attach fstab and /var/log/fsck/checkfs for your diagnostic
purposes. It is rather annoying that there is no way to tell exactly
which filesystem caused the problem given the above output.

Examining the output in that log, it appears it is running fsck -C -R
-A -a. I can reproduce the problem at will by running that command in
the maintenance shell. I ran fsck -C -R -A -a -s -V in the
maintenance shell, and determined that the problem was with:

fsck.vfat -a /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Apple_iPod...-part2

You will see that this filesystem is marked user, noauto in fstab and
ought not to be checked by fsck at boot time. It never was until
recently, either.

On a lark, I changed the pass number in fstab to 0. That fixed the
issue.

However, this change which can render a system unbootable ought to, at
minimum, be detected and warned about in a preinst. Better yet, it
should never attempt to fsck a noauto filesystem. If it really must,
an error to do so ought not be fatal to the boot process.

All systems with this problem upgraded from util-linux 2.16.1-4 to
2.16.2-0.

The new release breaks user space fusermount -u and pam-encfs.

I have a $HOME mounted with pam-encfs. After the update I was not able
to login anymore. The problem is that pam-encfs uses allow_root as
default. But after the update any use of allow_root, allow_other or
- --public will result in a broken system where the mount just hangs
forever (Until a long timeout I think).

But removing that option is not the whole way. It gives me back the
capability to log in but locks seems to not working anymore and of
course root cannot access the $HOME and so daemons cannot also (Like
sshd to check the authorized_keys).

The last issue with the new version is that I am not able to umount
shares with fusermount -u. I get a permission denied.

I had to downgrade back to version 2.8.1-1.2 to get back a working
system.

Bug#607951: Snort-common: error in preinst script generates improper config files

2010-12-24 Thread Javier Fernandez-Sanguino
Package: snort-common
Version: 2.8.5.2-2
Severity: serious
Tag: pending

Reviewing today the patch introduced in snort-common's preinst has two bugs
that have the following consequences:

- the /etc/snort/database.conf file created gets overwritten with the
contents of snort.conf and the resulting configuration prevents the snort
daemon from starting.

- the use of bash's echo when parsing /etc/default/snort.conf generates
config files with errors

I have generated new packages fixing these bugs and will upload them as soon
as I recover my internet connectivity.

Regards

Javier

This solution will fail if /var/www/squid-reports/* ever expands to

One simple answer is to just ignore the error:

Bug#601220: orphaning noip2? (was: Re: Bug#601220: noip2: abuse of debconf)

2010-12-24 Thread Joost van Baal
Hi,

Is Avi Rozen no longer interested in working on the noip2 Debian package?

If so, it should indeed get orphaned. Googling revealed:

You should set the package maintainer to Debian QA Group
packa...@qa.debian.org and submit a bug report against the
pseudo package wnpp. The bug report should be titled O: package
-- short description indicating that the package is now orphaned.
The severity of the bug should be set to normal. [...] send a
copy to debian-de...@lists.debian.org by putting the address
in the X-Debbugs-CC: header of the message [...]

And the bug should be fixed too, of course...

Bye,

Joost

Bug#607953: xorg: apt-get install build-dep does not install all the required packages

2010-12-24 Thread Hideki Yamane
Hi,

At least the following packages are required for building, but are not
automatically installed when using apt-get install build-dep:

It should be apt-get build-dep xorg. Could you check it, again?
I could build packages with pbuilder.

Not really.

I'm still using no-ip.com services, but I've recently switched to using
ddclient as the update client.

As for the current bug, I'd like to point out that noip2 configuration
and runtime state has always been kept in a binary configuration file.
This doesn't match the Debian policy, and the current abuse of debconf
is the result of a our deliberate attempt to workaround it.

Cheers,
Avi
