The reporter is right that -dev packages should be arch:any, not arch:all. Even if the current libmp4v2-dev package doesn't ship any architecture dependent files, the resulting churn from buildd skew (i.e., the situation when the buildds for some architectures are slow, this results in the library being uninstallable when the -dev package is superseeded with a new upload) is really not worth saving a few kbytes on the archive mirrors. I've done that change in git already. What should be my contingency plan? Thanks. you can provide us a patch, or find someone that wants to write one. That would speed up upstream and debian fixing. Bug#637797: virtualbox-4.1: vboxdrv causing Kernel Panic on shutdown
Package: virtualbox-4.1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Once the vboxdrv module is loaded my X60 Notebook is not able to shutdown normally anymore but runs into a Kernel Panic. Suspend to RAM and Hibernate are also affected. Both get stuck with a black screen and the status LEDs of my notebook flashing. I found the vboxdrv be responsible for this. I'm not sure how to get exactly the package you mentioned installed. If you could give me a quick advise how to do that i'll give it a try. Well, to be honest, it's not going to be quick, as virtualbox 4.1 is not available for stable from Debian's repositories. So I'd suggest not even going there, after all. Bug#635604: Suggested usability design for dnet-common configuration dialog.
It bit me as well. I had a static DHCP bind by MAC address in order to use port forwarding to my PC which made my PC unreachable. The MAC address change also made it un-WoL-able by MAC address. So, applications like Blender are indirectly depending on libdnet, and, on systems which convert Recommends: to Depends:, makes them dependent on dnet-common. I think that libdnet should only *suggest* dnet-common, would help, but that would be a libdnet bug, not a dnet-common bug. That said, I also found the configuration dialog for dnet-common has serious issues. The dnet-common configuration dialog currently says: You can configure your system as a DECnet node now or later. If you have already set up your system to use DECnet you can skip this and leave the configuration as it is. If you choose to configure now this will set up your system. This operation needs to change the MAC address of your network cards, it may work directly or it may require a reboot. Please close all open connections such as ssh sessions and downloads before you continue. If you opt to configure later you can run this configure step again with: dpkg-reconfigure dnet-common If you are unsure, select 'configure later' and contact your system administrator. Configure DECnet now: [ configure now ] [ configure later ] [ skip and leave config as it is ] **default** There are some issues with it: 1. All three options change the MAC address and start the DECnet service. This is a serious bug. 2. Although it does state that MAC address will change, it is merely said as a justification for it may work directly or it may require a reboot. It does not stand out whatsoever by itself. 3. It says if you are unsure, select configure later, but the default option is skip and leave config as it is. This happens even if there is not any previous dnet-common configuration. 4. Even if there is no DECnet-related configuration, the skip and leave config as it is option appears on screen. 5. The options are confusing. I actually wanted a configure never, so, knowing that there was no previous configuration I chose skip and leave config as it is. Also, both configure later and skip... seems to conceptually be equivalent. If there is a configuration already, both will leave it as it is. If there is no configuration, both should not touch the system. Any special cases? I suggest the following design to the configuration box: You can configure your system as a DECnet node now or later. If you have already set up your system to use DECnet you can skip this and leave the configuration as it is. WARNING: Configuring your system as a DECnet node requires chaning the MAC address of your network cards! By default, all network cards will have the same MAC address which may lead to serious addressing conflicts on your network! Due to this, should you choose to configure it now, it may work directly or it may require a reboot. Please close all open connections such as ssh sessions and downloads before you continue. If you wish to configure DECnet later you can run this configure step again with: dpkg-reconfigure dnet-common If you are unsure, select 'No' and contact your system or network administrator. Configure DECnet now? a) [ Yes, proceed to DECnet configuration ] b) [ No, don't touch the system configuration ] **default If option a) is chosen, DECnet configuration should proceed to ask the address or the area/node combination, and, have an button to [ Cancel ] address configuration and jump back to this dialog. If option b) is chosen, nothing will be touched, at all. -- Octavio. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Suspend to RAM and Hibernate are also affected. Both get stuck with a black screen and the status LEDs of my notebook flashing. I found the vboxdrv be responsible for this. After manually unloading the module vboxdrv and its three dependencies system shutdown works normal. Suspend to RAM and Hbernate also work when the module is unloaded. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.2 APT prefers proposed-updates APT policy: (500, 'proposed-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.utf8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages virtualbox-4.1 depends on: ii adduser3.112+nmu2add and remove users and groups ii debconf [debconf-2 1.5.36.1 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.11.2-10 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libcurl3-gnutls7.21.0-2 Multi-protocol file transfer libra ii libgcc11:4.4.5-8 GCC support library ii libgl1-mesa-glx [l 7.7.1-4 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libpng12-0 1.2.44-1+squeeze1 PNG library - runtime ii libpython2.6 2.6.6-8+b1Shared Python runtime library (ver ii libqt4-network 4:4.6.3-4+squeeze1Qt 4 network module ii libqt4-opengl 4:4.6.3-4+squeeze1Qt 4 OpenGL module ii libqtcore4 4:4.6.3-4+squeeze1Qt 4 core module ii libqtgui4 4:4.6.3-4+squeeze1Qt 4 GUI module ii libsdl1.2debian1.2.14-6.1Simple DirectMedia Layer ii libssl0.9.80.9.8o-4squeeze1 SSL shared libraries ii libstdc++6 4.4.5-8 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.3.3-4 X11 client-side library ii libxcursor11:1.1.10-2X cursor management library ii libxext6 2:1.1.2-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxinerama1 2:1.1-3 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxml22.7.8.dfsg-2+squeeze1 GNOME XML library ii libxmu62:1.0.5-2 X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxt6 1:1.0.7-1 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii psmisc 22.11-1 utilities that use the proc file s ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime Versions of packages virtualbox-4.1 recommends: ii binutils 2.20.1-16 The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii dkms 2.1.1.2-5 Dynamic Kernel Module Support Fram ii evince [pdf-viewer]2.30.3-2 Document (PostScript, PDF) viewer ii gcc4:4.4.5-1 The GNU C compiler ii libasound2 1.0.23-2.1shared library for ALSA applicatio ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl 7.7.1-4 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libhal10.5.14-3 Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libpulse0 0.9.21-3+squeeze1 PulseAudio client libraries ii libsdl-ttf2.0-02.0.9-1 ttf library for Simple DirectMedia ii linux-headers-2.6-686 2.6.32+29 Header files for Linux 2.6-686 (me ii linux-headers-2.6.32-5 2.6.32-35 Header files for Linux 2.6.32-5-68 ii make 3.81-8An utility for Directing compilati ii python-central 0.6.16+nmu1 register and build utility for Pyt virtualbox-4.1 suggests no packages. ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Dirk Blau dirkb...@ymail.com writes: In this case, the package is from Oracle, not Debian, and the report should be filed with them: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker Thanks, i'll file the bug with their bugtracker then. Bug#637818: aimage: FTBFS with wrong check for libssl
Package: aimage Version: 3.2.4-1 Severity: serious Tags: patch Justification: FTBFS User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com Usertags: origin-ubuntu oneiric ubuntu-patch In addition to bug #618087, which is still present, aimage now also fails to build because of a wrong autoconf check for libssl: the autoconf check examines libssl for an 'ssl3_new' symbol, despite the fact that it never *uses* this symbol at runtime. The attached patch corrects the autoconf check to only look for symbols that are actually needed, and removes a wrong reference to a non-existent 'm4' directory, allowing autoreconf to run successfully. Since bug #618087 is still outstanding, I intend to remove the broken/FTBFS aimage binary from the upcoming Ubuntu release. Bug#637758: Distributing static libraries
On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 11:40 PM, Felipe Sateler fsate...@debian.org wrote: On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 22:29, Andres Mejia mcita...@gmail.com wrote: On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 3:46 AM, Fabian Greffrath fab...@greffrath.com wrote: Am 11.08.2011 05:22, schrieb Andres Mejia: I have seen a commit with mp4v2 that disables building of the static library. Though I know binaries in Debian are normally linked with shared libraries, distributing the static library is beneficial to users with different requirements for software they distribute. I have heard of various use cases involving distribution of stand alone binaries (no dependent shared libraries). The problem with this specific library is its license, which prohibits linking against about 99% of packages that come into consideration to make use of it. So most probably any application that statically links against it commits a license violation. :/ Therefore, many applications fall back to dlopen() the library, in which case only the header files (if at all) are required. A similar case is libdvdcss. All applications that I know to make use of it try to dlopen() it instead of explicit linking, because they know that this library is widely considered undistributable - though for other reasons. - Fabian ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers Ok, I see you're considering to licensing issues with mp4v2. I was referring to the issue of simply providing static libraries in general (not just with mp4v2). To state what I've mentioned another way, we shouldn't disable distribution of static libraries simply because packages in Debian won't link to them. Actually, I think static libraries should be disabled by default and enabled when needed. They provide zero value for most. Those who need it can build the static libraries themselves. And they probably will/should anyways, since static libs will probably be used in some rare context. Going back to the issue of distributing static libs, I suppose it's true that static libs will not be needed by most. However, the users that would need them would expect them to be in the development package of their distro (in Debian's case, the -dev package). We could make these users build the libraries themselves, but then they would also need to build all the build dependencies as well for the library they need. This can be quite a burden on various architectures, such as arm or mips. I'm sure everyone here is aware that for most libraries, it's not just a matter of running './configure make'. It's likely these various users would be under limited time and resources to provide their deliverable, thus I suspect they would simply look elsewhere for precompiled static libraries. -- Saludos, Felipe Sateler ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers -- Regards, Andres Mejia -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#633789: notify-osd
Hi, I have update my system, and guake not work . Using wheezy/sid. I think the problem is obviously notification-daemon. /var/log/apt/history.log: Start-Date: 2011-08-14 04:47:17 Commandline: apt-get dist-upgrade Upgrade: notification-daemon:i386 (0.5.0-3, 0.7.1-3) End-Date: 2011-08-14 04:47:36 Sylvestre Ledru wrote: Le mercredi 10 août 2011 à 17:07 +0100, Daniel Wright a écrit : I had the same problem but found that if I installed the package notify-osd (currently at 0.9.30-1 in sid) then guake now launches correctly. Seems like guake (or python-notify) should have a dependency on notify-osd. Oh, really ? Thanks Can anyone confirm that ? It works, nicely, nicely :) Thanks! Bug#637845: deal.ii: FTBFS: arch-dependent build runs debian/rules build-doc target without Build-Depends-Indep packages installed
Package: src:deal.ii Version: 7.0.0-2 Severity: serious For some reason, arch-dependent builds on the buildds are triggering the build-doc target, but doxygen is not installed because it's in Build-Depends-Indep but not Build-Depends. I can't figure out why it's doing this, and can't reproduce it. -Adam -- GPG fingerprint: D54D 1AEE B11C CE9B A02B C5DD 526F 01E8 564E E4B6 Engineering consulting with open source tools http://www.opennovation.com/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
