But I do _not_ find that to be the case here.  So I imagine something
has changed, and that the modern incarnation of this bug has the same
 cause as bug#618530 after all.

Yes I think so

Am I understanding correctly?  What package does this prevent from
 building from source?

texlive-pstricks pdf documentation of pst-geo could not build from
source. And even viewed.
But you could regress this bug since we have the already built
documentation on the tar.bz2

Bug#645487: ensembl: includes GPL code without source

2011-10-16 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Source: ensembl
Version: 63-1
Severity: serious
Justification: distributable?

Hi,

ensembl's debian/README.source says:

| Since Jalview is not yet part of Debian, its source code is also not
| yet available through or distribution. To better comply with the GPL,
| the source code of Ensembl also ships the sources for Jalview. It was
| downloaded from http://www.jalview.org/source/jalview_2_6_1.tar.gz
| with embedded jars removed. This dependency on the jalview .jar renders
| the Ensembl package non-free for the time being. The situtation shall
| improve over the course of 2011. The such repacked jar file is located
| in the Ensembl package's source tree at
| ensembl-57/htdocs/jalview/jalview_2.6.1_nojars.orig.tar.gz .

Unfortunately no such file exists --- I guess it disappeared during
some upgrade. The jars in the source package only contain class
files, no .java source files.

Assuming that what debian/copyright says is correct, this would make
the ensembl package non-distributable:

| Files: htdocs/jalview/jalview*.jar
[...]
| Copyright: (C) 1999-2011 by all authors.
| License: GPL-3

Am I understanding correctly? If so, please correct the package and
notify the admins of snapshot.debian.org so the nondistributable
versions can be removed. If not, please clarify in debian/copyright.

This must have been a huge effort to package. Thanks for your hard
work!

Regards,
Jonathan

Ah, so you mean the upstream TeXLive pstricks package is another
testcase, rather than that some Debian package such as texlive-extra
is failing to build from source.

Ok, lowering severity. Do you know what was the intent of the checks
preventing inclusion of files from ../ introduced around 4 years ago
that Ralf Stubner mentioned? In modern gs, they seem to be enabled
by -dSAFER, despite not having anything to do with the description in
the manpage:

-dSAFER
Disables the deletefile and renamefile operators
and the ability to open files in any mode other than
read-only. This strongly recommended for spoolers,
conversion scripts or other sensitive environments
where a badly written or malicious PostScript program
code must be prevented from changing important files.

By contrast with bug#618530, this .. check kicks in even for gs -P.
That is:

mkdir subdir
man -t ls ls.ps

echo '(ls.ps) run' | gs;# displays manpage.
echo '(ls.ps) run' | gs -dSAFER;# fails.
echo '(ls.ps) run' | gs -P -dSAFER; # displays manpage.

cd subdir
echo '(../ls.ps) run' | gs; # displays manpage.
echo '(../ls.ps) run' | gs -dSAFER; # fails.
echo '(../ls.ps) run' | gs -P -dSAFER; # fails.

A buffer overflow issue in kfreebsd has been disclosed [0] along with a
poc [1]. patch is available [2].

I've only checked the kfreebsd-8 source, but the description says -7 is
affected, and 9- and higher may be as well; I haven't checked those.

Best wishes,
Mike

So what should be done with these bugs? I am tempted to say:

Does that sound reasonable?

In Ubuntu, the attached patch was applied to achieve the following:

   * debian/control: Add x11-xserver-utils to build-dependencies. We
 can't guarantee that someone won't build in a tty with a non-empty
$DISPLAY (which is what the upstream Makefile checks), so even
though this source package compiles fine on the buildds, handle the
other case, too. Fixes FTBFS. (Closes: #641156)

That doesn't seem correct. The build process should not even try to
start X clients. Either dropping that code or unsetting DISPLAY from
debian/rules would be better IMO.

Cheers,
Julien

The cause:

| /usr/lib/libguile.la:dependency_libs=' /usr/lib/libgmp.la -lcrypt -lm
/usr/lib/libltdl.la -ldl'

| guile-1.8-dev: /usr/lib/libguile.la
| $ dpkg-query -W guile-1.8-dev
| guile-1.8-dev 1.8.7+1-3

Possible fixes:

 A. install a symlink at /usr/lib/libgmp.la to make sure rdeps keep building

 B. update guile-1.8-dev (ideally by clearing dependency_libs, if that works)
and any other packages that might have been relying on the old .la file,
then add a versioned Breaks

Obviously I prefer (B).

Thoughts?

So what should be done with these bugs? I am tempted to say:

  - lower severity to important, since we have a workaround
  - reassign to current ocaml-nox
  - merge and mark as forwarded to
http://caml.inria.fr/mantis/view.php?id=5371

 Does that sound reasonable?

Agreed.

Sheesh, I'm behind the times. This was fixed in guile version 1.8.8+1-1
indeed. Thanks for the sanity check.

I do think a Breaks would be a friendly thing to do (as usual when a
package in sid causes a package in the stable to stop behaving as
advertised).

Incidentally, is there a reason for libgmp-dev to keep the .la file at
all?

Bug#641156: xset: not found

2011-10-16 Thread Daniel T Chen
Package: tv-fonts
Version: 1.1-7
Followup-For: Bug #641156
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu precise ubuntu-patch

In Ubuntu, the attached patch was applied to achieve the following:

  * Revert build-dependency addition from previous upload upon advice
from Julien Cristau; instead, patch the upstream Makefile not to
execute the xset commands in the first place. (Closes: #641156)
- Use simple-patchsys.mk and add dont-run-xset.diff.

Thanks for considering the patch.

It affects a version of hardlink written in C. Our version is
written in Python. Both have the same name, but are implemented
differently.

According to my knowledge the C version of hardlink(1) was not packaged
anywhere when I wrote the Python version (and just a .c file distributed
from people.redhat.com, and unmaintained).

Package: libapache2-mod-perl2
Version: 2.0.4-7
Severity: important

After upgrading from lenny to squeeze calls to tie() from code running in
mod_perl 2 are failing.

The following code works fine from the command line but the tie() fails
silently when running in mod_perl 2:

print STDERR $0: GDBM_File::VERSION is $GDBM_File::VERSION\n;
sleep 1;
my %sec;
tie(%sec,'GDBM_File',$secdbf,GDBM_READER,0640);
print STDERR $0: key: $_\n foreach keys %sec;
untie %sec;

The tie fails for both GDBM and MLDBM databases.

We've been unable to reproduce this error on systems that were installed from
the latest squeeze CDs, it only
happens on systems that were migrated from lenny to squeeze.

As a troubleshooting measure I added print statements to gdbm_open() in
gdbmopen.c and installed my own
compiled version of the GDBM library but gdbm_open() is never called. Straces
from systems that are not working
confirm that.

What version of xserver-xorg-core do you use?
In case its 1.11.x, could you try dowgrading to 1.10.x (from
snapshot.debian.org or squeeze-backports, see instructions in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=642757#73 ) or 1.7.x

a proper RFS on mentors next week.

Package looks good. I've sponsored the upload.
The only smaller commment I would make, is that instead of not running
dh_makeshlibs at all, I'd prefer excluding /usr/lib/nautilus via -X.
But that's about it.

Thanks for your contributions to Debian,

Hi,

the Debian GNOME team is preparing the upload of nautilus 3 to
unstable.

The API of libnautilus-extension hasn't changed, but it builds
against GTK 3 now which changes its ABI, so the binary package name
was changed to libnautilus-extension1a.

Linking to both GTK 2 and GTK 3 in the same process is not supported
[1] and applications will abort. As a result, updating your package
for nautilus 3 means updating it to GTK 3.

nautilus 3 / libnautilus-extension 3 packages are available from
experimental. Please update and test your package against this
version and ideally upload it to experimental, too. This way, when we
start the transition, the package can be moved to unstable more
easily.

On behalf of the Debian GNOME team,

Michael Biebl

Bug#645487: ensembl: includes GPL code without source

Assuming that what debian/copyright says is correct, this would make
 the ensembl package non-distributable:

In how far would this make the package non-distributable? Just
providing the binary without source is OK as long as you can provide
the source at request. While you are correct that we should fix the
package I do not think that we need to take any more drastic action
like:

notify the admins of snapshot.debian.org so the nondistributable
 versions can be removed.

This would be pure overreaction.

Kind regards

Bug#639594: planning a NMU of the barry package

2011-10-16 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

I have prepared a NMU that fixes a few bugs in the barry package:

  #639594 (serious) uninstallable on kfreebsd-*
#622564 (important) still ships rules files in /etc/udev/
  #561243 (normal)Obsolete udev rules

This NMU is versioned as 0.15-1.2; please see attached nmudiff.

I intend to ask my AM (Cc'd) to upload it to DELAYED/10 at the end of
the month. Feel free to tell me if you think we should do otherwise.

Thank you for maintaining barry in Debian.

Bye,

Bug#645309: debpartial-mirror: cannot handle duplicate entries in Packages

2011-10-16 Thread Martin Fuzzey
tags 645309 + confirmed fixed-upstream
thanks

Hi Andrew,
thanks for reporting this bug and supplying the patch.

I think the long term fix for this would be to actually allow
mirroring repositories with duplicated packages (ie keeping the
duplicates). However that would require incompatible changes to the
PackageList class in python-cdd (used by other software) that
currently assumes unique package names per list.

So I've applied your patch to fix this bug.

Also it's probably going to happen all the time for sid. I'm surprised
this wasn't noticed and fixed before now.

Indeed there are currently 178 duplicates in Sid. I'm guessing that
most users of debpartial-mirror don't mirror Sid!

Regards,

Martin

Bug#645240: race-condition: background tasks run from postinst scripts cause lb_chroot_devpts to fail

2011-10-16 Thread Robert Luberda
severity 645240 wishlist
thanks

Hi,

1. Linux, by its design, is a multi-task system, and there's nothing in
the Policy that disallows spawning background tasks from maintainer
scripts, so I don't understand why this bug was marked serious.

2. `true' is a sensible default for the question for interactive use
(when user actually sees the question). For non-interactive use, `false'
would be better. I'm thinking about distinguishing between interactive
and non-interactive usage by using debconf's seen flag - i.e. skip the
indexing if user hasn't seen the question.

3. There's another task spawned (unconditionally) by dwww's postinst:

if ( -x /etc/cron.daily/dwww )
{
print STDERR \nBuilding dwww pages in the background...\n;
system(setsid /etc/cron.daily/dwww );
}
This should take a far less time to complete, but still there's a
similar race condition to the one reported here. So probably this also
should be run in foreground in non-interactive installation.

Regards,
robert

Looking at the upstream situation, this package will clearly need to be
 removed.

As the upstream situation hasn't changed and #638117 is now blocking the
gnome-panel / GNOME 3transition, I'm reassigning this bug to ftp-master.

Please remove this package from the archive.

For the only reverse dependency, deskbar-plugins-pinot, I've filed [1] and

Hi,

the Debian GNOME team is preparing the upload of nautilus 3 to

Hey,

Solar Designer reported on http://seclists.org/oss-sec/2011/q4/30 that
multiple issues were found in radvd 1.8.1. Not all of them apply to
1.6-1 in squeeze or 1.8-1 in sid though.

As far as I can tell:

* CVE-2011-3601 (privilege escalation) is present in 1.8-1 but not in
  1.6-1 (no support for ND_OPT_DNSSL_INFORMATION in 1.6)
  Patch:
https://github.com/reubenhwk/radvd/commit/9dfaaaf740ce784541e76e68de4ae04dce2c0921
* CVE-2011-3602 (arbitrary file overwrite) is present in both versions
  Patch:
https://github.com/reubenhwk/radvd/commit/92e22ca23e52066da2258df8c76a2dca8a428bcc
* CVE-2011-3603 (failure to check privsep() errors) is present in both versions
  Patches:
https://github.com/reubenhwk/radvd/commit/2c50375043186e133f15135f4c93ca964238ee60

https://github.com/reubenhwk/radvd/commit/7dc53cc3b792775369bf0b2f053a3f4ed5d87e3d
* CVE-2011-3604 (buffer overreads) is present in both versions
  Patch:
https://github.com/reubenhwk/radvd/commit/7de1b9abf87b747ee2611c0d2a94dfeee79878b4
* CVE-2011-3605 (denial of service in unicast mode) is present in both versions
  Patch:

https://github.com/reubenhwk/radvd/commit/2591d0189257caeaae2057dfed0a260310497a61

I'm reporting only one bug for all the issues, which can be fixed by
uploading 1.8.2-1 to unstable. For squeeze, backporting the patches
should be fairly straightforward.

Please add CVE numbers in the changelog.

How about this patch? (Untested, sorry.)

Well, thanks for the patch! I'm not that knowledgeable about python to see
what could be wrong in it, so I have to fully trust you. I have no problem with
that either :)

I've rebuilt the source package with your changes and seems to work as well
as previously, which is not much in my case because I've noticed it has
suffered also a binNMU, and it's now at 3.7.10-2+b1 version (bug was reported
for 3.7.10-2). Not sure which caused that as the release team hasn't answered
my original request, but now that we have it, I think the original reporter can
check if the current version fixes the problem, and afterwards, if not fixed,
upload a new version with your patch. Sounds that ok?

Anyway, going back to the patch, then I guess gtkparasite (also in the
archive) would be affected by the same problem, as it's where the patched line
originates [0]. It's code is used in the claws-mail-python-plugin to get the
python console. Don't you think?

Please do. I'd really like to finish the gedit transition anytime soon.

Dan, can we just drop the sced3 script into the current debian

Otherwise, I'm just going to disable the gedit plugin package for the

Bug#645565: needs porting to the new libpanel-applet interface

2011-10-16 Thread Michael Biebl
Source: ddccontrol
Version: 0.4.2-9
Severity: serious
User: pkg-gnome-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: applets-transition

Hi,

this package currently depends on libpanel-applet2-0 - most likely
because it provides an applet for the GNOME panel.

The introduction of gnome-panel 3.0 to unstable is imminent. In this
version, the libpanel-applet library has undergone large changes, and
file-browser-applet requires changes to support this version:
 * updating to the D-Bus activation mechanism
 * porting to GTK+ 3

2011-10-16 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Source: exodusii

Bug#645577: needs porting to the new libgnome-media-profiles interface

2011-10-16 Thread Michael Biebl
Source: gnomeradio
Version: 1.8-1.1
Severity: serious

Hi,

this package currently depends on libgnome-media0.

In GNOME 3, the libgnome-media library was replaced by
libgnome-media-profiles, and the libgnome-media-dev and libgnome-media0
packages are no longer available.

As libgnome-media-profiles is based on GTK 3 and mixing both GTK 3 and
GTK 2 in the same process is not allowed, updating to
libgnome-media-profiles also means you need to port your application to
GTK 3 / GNOME 3 libraries.

From the look at the upstream Git repository [1], such porting hasn't
happened yet.
If you don't plan to port the application yourself, the package needs to
be removed.
In this case, please re-assign this bug to ftp.debian.org.

Cheers,
Michael

Package: smart-notifier
Version: 0.28-3
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

Hi,

Installing the package will result in restart of dbus:
| Setting up smart-notifier (0.28-3) ...
| Stopping system message bus: dbus.
| Starting system message bus: dbus.

This lead to a crash of X session (or a restart if systemd is the init
process). Thus, any file not yet saved is lost.

The package must not restart dbus, but reload it.

Thanks

The introduction of gnome-panel 3.0 to unstable is imminent. In this
version, the libpanel-applet library has undergone large changes, and

 * http://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/AppletsDbusMigration

For packages that provide other functionality than the GNOME applet,
you can simply disable it in the build and remove the
build-dependency if it hasn’t been ported.

For pure applets packages, you should ask for removal from the
archive if you do not intend to port it to the new interface. Such
packages that have not been ported when gnome-panel is ready to
migrate will be kicked out of testing.

2011-10-16 Thread Arnaud Fontaine
Hello,

Could you please upload a package addressing this issue (or the latest
version available, namely 0.6.7) because it breaks supervisor package
(and thus my package relying on the latter)? If you wish, I can upload a
NMU if you don't have time...

Cheers,

thanks

Thanks, in this case this is not a duplicate of #642757.

Please report this to the nvidia forum (or add extra information in case
someone has the same problem) following NVIDIAs bug reporting instructions:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678
There is not much we can do about the non-free driver ourselves.
Please post the URL of a corresponding forum thread to this Debian bug,
so that others may follow progress.

Thanks

Andreas
