Moving to libnl-3 seems like a reasonable thing to do. When is the
 Jessie release planned?

There's no date determined yet. But I would expect a freeze sometime
 around Jan-Feb, 2014.

 Hello John,

Revisiting this topic now. From what information I have now, the freeze
may take effect from somewhere around end of this year.

But the transition to the libnl-3 library has been triggered for some
time now. To get it (FCoE) in shape, for inclusion into Jessie release,
I'd have to have this really way before.

Do you have any timelines now ?

PS: I haven't been following the FCoE development in quite some time.

Just a follow-up. This bug has now been tagged 'serious', which would
mean it will be dropped for the next release.

As a DD, you have access to the same hurd boxes that I do. :-) There
aren't any strace packages in the archive for hurd, however.

Otherwise, I can change it to linux-any ??
If the package only works on Linux but builds on other platforms then
 that seems the best approach.

The old kfreebsd binaries are still in unstable; you need to ask
ftp-master to remove them.

See https://wiki.debian.org/ftpmaster_Removals and/or reportbug
ftp.debian.org. (Maybe there should be NM questions on this? :)

Well right now I'm running jessie so I can't actually do this (short

Now that I've reassign this bug, gphoto2 should have migrated to jessie.

Hi,

Attached patch would fix this FTBFS (and all other bugs filed against
smbc package). It's better fix sicne not modify upstream source.
Please consider to apply it, or just I'll upload to delayed queue.

---BeginMessage---
Package: udisks
Version: 1.0.4-7
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

lvm snapshot removal has been broken in debian for a few years now.
lvremove has a good chance at any moment to deadlock IO to a box. If
you happen to be lucky enough to have dmsetup still in cache, you
might be able to resume the device, but more often than not, you
simply have no choice but to reboot. Which is kinda bad.

/lib/udev/rules.d/80-udisks.rules has the following line in it:
KERNEL==dm-*, OPTIONS+=watch

From https://www.redhat.com/archives/linux-lvm/2010-August/msg00038.html
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=577798#c5

we see that you can remove that line, and have reliable lvm again. In
fact, rhel6 has a similar kernel to debian wheezy, and has commented
that line out all together:

# Make udevd synthesize a 'change' uevent when last opener of a rw-fd closes
the fd - this
# should be part of the device-mapper rules
#
# Disabled as per #738479
# KERNEL==dm-*, OPTIONS+=watch

(unfortunately we don't have permission to view rhbz#738479, but I
suspect it's just a clone of the fc13 bug 577798)

Since I believe this bug directly causes debian bugs: 592250 549691
618016 and probably dozens of others, can we just remove that line in
/lib/udev/rules.d/80-udisks.rules like they have in RHEL6 until the
real race condition is discovered? Marking as critical, because
udisks seems to be pulled in by default on debian, seems to be
unnecessary, and most definitely breaks unrelated parts of the system
(forced reboots on production systems are bad, mmmkay?)

Bug#740268: mp3gain: A malformed mp3 file allows arbitrary code execution

On Thu, 27 Feb 2014 at 16:43:35 +, Gustavo Grieco wrote:

Hi,
Have you already reported this bug to mp3gain's upstream developer
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/ or requested a CVE ID for it?

How did you find this overflow? Did you use a fuzzer or similar to construct
your PoC, or did you locate a specific buffer that was overflowed by
inspecting the source code, or what?

Do you have any advice on fixing or mitigating this class of vulnerability?

`gcc -fsanitize=address` appears to catch this overflow, so I've uploaded
version 1.5.2-r2-4 built with that option in order to mitigate this bug.
That produces what's probably a more useful backtrace:

(gdb) break __asan_report_error

(gdb) run

From the details given when not breaking on __asan_report_error, it appears
that (on x86-64) 209 bytes are written to a position 31895 bytes into the
31920 byte struct mpstr_tag mp, overflowing it. If my arithmetic is correct,
that starting position is close to the end of the array 'synth_buffs'.

I don't know this codebase well - Fabrizio, you're the maintainer, any ideas?

This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail, and violates
sections 7.6.1 and 10.1 of the policy. An optimal solution would
consist in only one of the packages installing that file, and renaming
or removing the file in the other package. Depending on the
circumstances you might also consider Replace relations or file
diversions. If the conflicting situation cannot be resolved then, as a
last resort, the two packages have to declare a mutual
Conflict. Please take into account that Replaces, Conflicts and
diversions should only be used when packages provide different
implementations for the same functionality.

Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages
(according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be
slightly out of sync):

  /usr/bin/dccp
  /usr/share/man/man1/dccp.1.gz

This bug has been filed against both packages. If you, the maintainers of
the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will
resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package. You may then
also register in the BTS that the other package is affected by the bug.

Bug#740268: mp3gain: A malformed mp3 file allows arbitrary code execution

2014-03-10 Thread Simon McVittie

 I haven't. Should I now?

You probably know more about this bug and its implications than I do, so
yes, please do. Please reply to this bug report with a link to the
upstream bug.

I must admit I'm rather surprised to see a member of a team working in
vulnerability research reporting this as a public bug to Debian without
having notified either upstream or the Debian security team privately.
Please consider practising responsible disclosure in future
vulnerability reports.

How did you find this overflow? Did you use a fuzzer or similar to
 construct
your PoC, or did you locate a specific buffer that was overflowed by
inspecting the source code, or what?

In fact, no source code was used. For the vulnerability discovery, we
used Mayhem combined with a new technique to fuzz based on automatic
 input detection and seed minimization.
And for exploitation, we used a blackbox tool that automatically
generate a working exploit. It is very effective (it requires to disable
DEP and ASRL, but these are only additions to the exploitation process).
We have hundreds of these small exploits, waiting for a response from
the Debian Security team on how to submit them (since we don't want to
 SPAM them).

I think it's highly unlikely that the desired submission mechanism is
going to be open public bugs in Debian without notifying the packages'
upstreams...

I'm not very familiar with the -fsanitize flag of gcc. Nevertheless, i
think that enabling the full stack protection available in gcc
(-fstack-protector-all) will be an effective mitigation.

I'm not so sure. It's already compiled with -fstack-protector
--param=ssp-buffer-size=4, and the static buffer in question is
considerably larger than 4 bytes, so I don't see how
-fstack-protector-all would help us.

From the buildd reports I've had back, it looks as though
-fsanitize=address only works on x86, so I'm going to have to undo this
mitigation on other architectures.

It would help if you added a Version: to that it's clear from the beginning
that 0.5.x is not affected.

Even if that was the case, why are you filing a RC bug aagisnt
a version which is not in the archive nor accepted?

If it was accepted and you filed a bug to remind me to fix it, ok. But
TTOBMK it wasn't accepted (yet)

If you rejected it and wanted me to reupload it this package was never
in the archive no no big either.

But as it is right now it's a completely irrelevant and wrong bug.

Bug#740268: mp3gain: A malformed mp3 file allows arbitrary code execution

2014-03-10 Thread Gustavo Grieco
2014-03-10 9:34 GMT-03:00 Simon McVittie s...@debian.org:

(Please keep the bug's email address in Cc with any information on this
bug that is intended to be public.)

Sorry about that!

On 10/03/14 12:06, Gustavo Grieco wrote:
Have you already reported this bug to mp3gain's upstream developer

  I haven't. Should I now?

You probably know more about this bug and its implications than I do, so
yes, please do. Please reply to this bug report with a link to the
 upstream bug.

I was waiting to receive a response from the package maintainer to submit a
bug report to the upstream developer. Anyway, the upstream report is here:

https://sourceforge.net/p/mp3gain/bugs/36/

I must admit I'm rather surprised to see a member of a team working in
vulnerability research reporting this as a public bug to Debian without
having notified either upstream or the Debian security team privately.
Please consider practising responsible disclosure in future
 vulnerability reports.

I had an interesting discussion with one of the member of the Debian
Security team, and he told me not to email them with 'private' reports if
the vulnerability disclosed wasn't very important in terms of surface of
attack (like the some other bugs we reported recently). I doubt that was a
'serious' vulnerability (mp3gain is not a very popular program and it is
very unlikely that someone will run it with an untrusted mp3 file) so i
started reporting it to the Debian BTS publicly as they suggested me
(upstream was another option they told me).

Well, it'd help to check the logs in /var/log/lightdm when that happens.

Bug#701302: kiwix: ftbfs with GCC-4.8

2014-03-10 Thread Vasudev Kamath

Hi,

This bug seems to be fixed by upstream in their Git where they seem to
have removed the clucene code completely. This should be part of next
upstream release which is still on going.

I might try and pull down their git snapshot to test this in between.

Cheers,

Hi.

Package: octave-vrml
Version: 1.0.13-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable (uninstallable)

It's impossible to configure octave 3.8.0 with octave-vrml installed:

Processing triggers for octave (3.8.0-5) ...

The problem appears to be that most of the Depends entries in
octave-vrml's DESCRIPTION file lack version requirements; could you
please take a look, and either fix octave to permit such entries or
octave-vrml not to supply them?

Thanks!

Bug#741296: education-common: uninstallable in jessie because it pull in conflicting cups-filters and foomatic-filters

2014-03-10 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: education-common
Version: 1.714
Severity: critical
Tags: patch

When trying to install Debian Edu in Jessie, the installation fail
because cups and hplip are uninstallable. I tested a minial profile
installation. I tracked the cause down to be that cups-filters and
foomatic-filters conflict with each other and can't be installed
together, while the education-common task want to install both.

I asked the printing team, and Didier 'OdyX' Raboud replied that
cups-filters have replaced foomatic-filters and the latter should be
removed from any task that want to install CUPS as a printer system.
See URL:https://lists.debian.org/2fl8uslt8bg@diskless.uio.no and
URL:https://lists.debian.org/2402909.EEP9z5BeC1@gyllingar for the
details.

I believe this patch will solve the problem, but is a bit unsure about
the version number to use for foomatic-filters to ensure that the
package keep working in Wheezy also if there is a security patch for the
package.

  * tasks/common: List cups-filters (= 1.0.42-1) as an alternative for the
foomatic-filters package, to install the former in jessie as the latter
is obsolete there.

Hi,

Two vulnerabilities have been identified in freetype in the recently

details.

From what I understood from the bug report, CVE-2014-2240 is the stack OOB
read/write, while CVE-2014-2241 is the DoS caused by the assert.

Bug#741303: libfeel++1: libfeelpp.so.1.0.0 links with both GPL-licensed and GPL-incompatible libraries

2014-03-10 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: libfeel++1
Version: 1:0.95.0-final-2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3
User: debian-science-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: scotch-license-issues

Hello,
the library /usr/lib/libfeelpp.so.1.0.0 links with:

= libumfpack.so.5.6.2, which is under the GNU GPL v2 or later

= libcholmod.so.2.1.2, which has parts under the GNU GPL v2 or later

  = libptscotch-5.1.so and libptscotcherr-5.1.so, which are released
under the GPL-incompatible terms of the CeCILL-C v1.0 license

= libpetsc.so.3.4.2 and libslepc.so.3.4.2, which, though not being
under strong copyleft or under copyleft at all, link, in their
turn, with the above three libraries...

= libglpk.so.36, which is under the GNU GPL v3 or later

= libgmsh.so.2, which is under the GNU GPL v2 or later (with some
exceptions, but not regarding SCOTCH or CeCILL-C)

This seems to mean that package libfeel++1 includes a file which
links with both GPL-licensed and GPL-incompatible libraries.

Please refer to the similar bug #740463 for some further details about
the SCOTCH licensing issues.

I have also noticed that package feel++-apps includes several files
which link with the above mentioned combination of libraries.

I think the possible solutions to the issue for feel++ are, in
descending order of desirability:

 (A) SCOTCH copyright holders should be contacted and persuaded to
re-license (or dual-license) it under GPLv2-or-later-compatible terms

 (B) SCOTCH should be substituted with a GPLv2-or-later-compatible
replacement, if any is available (METIS seems to be at least
GPLv3-or-later-compatible, see https://bugs.debian.org/740463#15 )

 (C) GPL-licensed library (such as UMFPACK and CHOLMOD, GLPK, Gmsh)
copyright holders should be asked to relax the copyleft (for instance
by switching to the LGPL v2.1) or add license exceptions that give
permission to link their works with code released under CeCILL-C v1.0

As said in other bug reports, the best solution is (A):
I am thus renewing my call for help to push in the direction of
{re|dual}-licensing SCOTCH under the GNU LGPL v2.1:
please see https://bugs.debian.org/740463#5 for the full story.

Bug#741131: Fwd: Bug#741131: nonfree file in source

2014-03-10 Thread Δημήτρης Ευταξιόπουλος
Hello Alexey,
I would suggest option (1) i.e replace the file with its source(s).
For the version 2.2.2 package I intend to create a patch and remove
json/sylvester.js from the source.

Best regards
Dimitris

 As continuation of previous e-mail.

 4. You can just omit json folder when you create source package. Nothing
depend on it (except 1 line in CmakeLists.txt).

So, the question is: what I should do?
  1. Should I replace this file by source javascript file(s)?
  2. Or I can just add a link to the place where sources are located?
  3. Or I can keep everything as is? -- because json folder is just the
sample for JSON usage, and I never plan to install it. In fact I can move
  json folder to examples one.

json/sylvester.js is a minified javascript file. It is not source code
because it is not the preferred form of modification. The source code is
the javascript file that was used to create the minified one.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll import the relevant parts to Debian.

Please note that patch was updated recently to install reins.cmi, without it
the library was effectively unusable.

I see. I'll try to replace sylvester.js by it source(s).

 json/sylvester.js from the source.

I suggest to remove whole folder json -- as I say before, it give just a
sample, and isn't used by other parts of MathGL.

 Best regards
 Dimitris

Bug#741312: squid3: CVE-2014-0128: Denial of Service in SSL-Bump

2014-03-10 Thread Salvatore Bonaccorso
Control: severity -1 normal

Actually squid3's binary package produced in Debian is not affected as
we do not build with --enable-ssl. Patch apply to source, so only
affects users which rebuild the package enabling SSL support.

(#711381 for the reference)

Regards,
Salvatore
