Bug#763431: linux-image-3.16-2-amd64: Doesn't finish booting
Package: linux-image-3.16-2-amd64 Version: 3.16.3-2 Severity: grave Dear Maintainer, The kernel image installed by the linux-image-3.16-2-amd64 package fails to boot into a working system. The boot stalls at the following error (manually reproduced from a cellphone photograph so there may be typographical errors): INIT: version 2.88 booting [info] Using makefile-style concurrent boot in runlevel S. [ok] Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd. [ok] Synthesizing the initial hotplug events...done [] Waiting for /dev to be fully populated... [ 240.062008] INFO: task kworker/u8:5:113 blocked for more than 120 seconds. [ 240.062104]Not tainted 3.16-2-amd64 #1 [ 240.062159] echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs disables this message The last three lines of the boot message extract repeats with only the time stamps changing. Pressing Ctrl-C allows the boot to proceed but only to an emergency root shell, not a fully working system. Under the emergency shell, the filesystem is mounted read-only. From the shell prompt, I can shut down but not reboot the computer. Any attempt at a soft reboot (via the command shutdown now -r or simply reboot) results in the shutdown of system processes but doesn't actually restart the computer. I must then press the hardware power button to shut down the computer before turning it back on. Invoking shutdown now -h, however, does result in a successful shutdown. The above boot failure does NOT affect the previous kernel image package of the Linux 3.16 series (linux-image-3.16-1-amd64). This is the kernel I am currently using to type this bug report. The boot failure also does NOT affect Debian kernel images of the Linux 3.14 series. I have reinstalled the problematic kernel image package twice to rebuild the initrd but the result is the same. The kernel fails to boot the computer into a usable condition. -- Package-specific info: ** Kernel log: boot messages should be attached ** Model information sys_vendor: ZOTAC product_name: ZBOXNANO-ID63/ID64/ID65 product_version: XX chassis_vendor: NA chassis_version: NA bios_vendor: American Megatrends Inc. bios_version: 4.6.5 board_vendor: ZOTAC board_name: ZBOXNANO-ID63/ID64/ID65 board_version: XX ** PCI devices: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor DRAM Controller [8086:0154] (rev 09) Subsystem: ZOTAC International (MCO) Ltd. I have already apologized for not Ccing the plan explicitly, so you were not aware of the plan. I have carefully drafted the plan, checked it with debian-devel and release team and I am very sorry that I did not sent it to you explicitly. Please abide by the CTTE decision and revert that. You cannot ask me to obey the CTTE decision while blatantly disregarding it. I have just uploaded src:libjpeg-turbo 1:1.3.1-4 to unstable with libjpeg-progs removed. I am also willing to rename libjpeg62* with new package names even though it would cancel current transition and start a new one and leave the archive in the mess. But I have a feeling that's something that needs to be decided by release team, since it's their area. Also since libjpeg62* was already in oldlibs, I kindly ask you to reconsider your position. You have been bullying me from the start, but this tops it all. I am extremely sorry that you feel that way. I never intended to be hostile to you before, during or after our dispute over default JPEG library. Nor do I feel that bringing the dispute to tech-ctte could be considered as bullying. Bug#763049: Can't boot, install or downgrade
Dear maintainer and users, I've been hit by this bug too ater upgrading grub and initramfs yesterday. From the initramfs shell, I can check that my readdlink has no -f option, I can mount the root partition on /, but this does not solve the problem. I've read that downgrading initramfs-tools has worked for some user, same as installing busybox. But I don't know how to install or downgrade from the initramfs shell. What is the trick? This transition is already underway, and is being tracked by the release team here: https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/wxpython3.0.html The wxPython 3.0 API mostly adds to the wxPython2.8 API. Many packages work with wxPython 3.0 without any changes, but there are a few incompatibilities. For example, wx.Color is no longer supported as an alias for wx.Colour, and some constants which were deprecated in 2.8 have been removed. All the removed constants I'm aware of were set to 0 in wxPython 2.8, so removing them is still compatible with 2.8. To assist updating to wxPython 3.0, I've put together a script which will help make the mechanical changes required. This is in a git repo on collab-maint along with a README about using it and updating packages for wxPython 3.0 in general: http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/wx-migration-tools.git The script has some options to control the sorts of changes it makes - see the README and --help output for more information - you can view the latest version of the README online here: http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/wx-migration-tools.git/tree/README I've developed this script by trying to convert 20+ packages. Please try it out on your package - in many cases, it should be enough to get your package working (if it doesn't already) - if it does, please upload (and close this bug). If the script doesn't do the job, please let me know (or improve the script if you can figure out what it needs to do to get your package working). Another issue you may hit is that wxWidgets 3.0 now defaults to enabling its WXDEBUG checks for incorrect API usage, so some applications will emit scary sounding assertion failures. These are unlikely to actually be new, just in a default build of 2.8, such incorrect uses were handled quietly behind the scenes. Sometimes these are easy to fix, but if not you can easily patch the application to tell wx 3.0 to handle them in the same way wx 2.8 does - details of how to do so are in the README: http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/wx-migration-tools.git/tree/README I'm happy to sponsor uploads for this transition, though if you have an active sponsor already check with them first - I don't want to tread on anyone's toes. This is a security issue because the encrypted disk does not get unmounted but the user will not be aware of this. The problem is that in pam/gkr-pam-module.c stop_daemon() sends SIGTERM to the gnome-keyring-daemon process instead of SIGKILL ie. just requesting shutdown and ensuring the process is really dead. This means that when pam_gnome_keyring.so returns from pam_close_session() the daemon is sometimes still running (race condition). Since the daemon has an open socket in the users home directory, pam_mount's umount call will fail. This was observed under lightdm and XFCE, but should also affect other systems that use pam-gnome-keyring and pam-mount together. Fix: replacing SIGTERM with SIGKILL in the source fixes the issue. You may want to use SIGTERM/sleep/if(alive) SIGKILL to give the daemon a chance to exit properly. Bug#745995: dico FTBFS on mips/mipsel -- RFH

When you run your example with LD_DEBUG=libs, you get the error: /usr/lib/mips-linux-gnu/libgc.so.1: error: symbol lookup error: undefined symbol: __data_start (fatal) The Boehm GC headers (on some arches) indicate that the calling program is expected to define __data_start somewhere (presumably by gcc) and this isn't happening. I've now tracked down the cause of this bug. Since 2.0, guile started depending on the Boehm GC. The GC needs to know where the start of the main data section is and on most linux based architectures it will scan the memory backwards from a known location to find it. On MIPS (and some other arches) it uses the symbol __data_start instead. This symbol is always defined by crt1.o so usually isn't a problem, however if this symbol is not used by any of the objects passed to ld, ld will not add the symbol to the dynamic symbols table. This will then cause dlopen(guile.so) to fail at runtime since __data_start is not defined. This is probably a bug in libgc unless there's a good reason to use __data_start on mips (I'm not sure why it's used). You can workaround this by passing -Wl,-E to the link stage of dico (and any executable which could load guile.so) to force __data_start to be exported. The build failure on s390x also seems to be this problem. James

That's against the stable release policies. Andreas specifically closed it for version 3.12.0-1. If you want to see a fix for wheezy, someone would need to make a backport of the fix and ask the stable release managers if such an update would be accepted. Given the workload of this Debian GNOME team it is unlikely that someone from the team will do it. If a tested patch would be provided and we'd have the ack from the release team, the situation would be different. Bug#763050: possible culprit: debugger plugin, turn it off as a workaround
Hi, I'm having the same problem right now on Jessie. It turns out that if I run geany -p (without loading plugins), it starts... When I run geany -v, I get: Geany-INFO: Geany 1.24.1, pl_PL.UTF-8 Geany-INFO: GTK 2.24.24, GLib 2.42.0 Geany-INFO: System data dir: /usr/share/geany Geany-INFO: User config dir: /home/elegant/.config/geany Geany-INFO: System plugin path: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/geany Geany-INFO: Added filetype Graphviz (58). I've checked the ~/.config/geany/geany.conf to see which plugins were enabled. There is a line starting with active_plugins where you can see all enabled plugins. In my case, the plugin which followed codenav.so was debugger.so I've removed its path from the file. Geany started. To sum up, 1. geany -p (should run) 2. geany -v (should show you if it terminates abnormally during the plugin-loading phase) 3. edit ~/.config/geany/geany.conf 4. look for debugger.so in an active_plugins line - if found, delete the path and try running geany again. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#763517: patches breaking color management
Package: cups Version: 1.7.5-2 Severity: critical I've been chasing this bug since some time now. The issue has been discussed in the CUPS and printing-architecture mailing-list. For the context. I'm printing on an Epson 3880 since 2 years with an home made profile. And recently I found that my prints were really bad. After investigation I found that reverting to CUPS 1.7.5-1 from testing fixes the problem. I have then found out that one difference with 1.7.5-2 is that the ColorManaged option is now listed as CM-Calibration in /etc/cups/printers.conf. Looking at the GNU/Debian change between 1.7.5-1 and 1.7.5-2 I think that the culprit is the following: [ Till Kamppeter ] * Updated color management extension patch to the newest version from Joseph Simon, especially to fix PPD updates via the web interface (LP: #1362321). (http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//main/c/cups/cups_1.7.5-3_changelog) It should probably be removed or fixed as it does not only fix the PPD updates via the web interface but also breaks color management done down the piper by the filters. Please let me know if you need more information. I can also do some testing but I've already wasted lot of paper and ink :) Thanks, -- Pascal Obry / Magny Les Hameaux (78) The best way to travel is by means of imagination http://v2p.fr.eu.org http://www.obry.net gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv-key F949BD3B -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. So, first: library transitions should be coordinated with reverse deps. Especially when we're getting close to a freeze and there's not much time left to fix things up. Second is how to fix this. One is to revert the xmlrpc-c change. Another is to make xfce4-screenshooter buildable with current xmlrpc-c. I'd appreciate having this all fixed within a week. Bug#755643: mumble-django: Please ensure it works with Django 1.7
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, On 27.09.2014 21:25, Raphael Hertzog wrote: If the problem is with Apache, it's probably not introduced with Django 1.7. Are you sure that the Apache problem is not related to Apache 2.4 and that the current package doesn't already suffer from it? Well, the problem was that the App didn't load correctly because I missed the WSGI script refactoring introduced in Django 1.4. So indeed, the old package was broken in that way. But so far, the package worked anyway. It was not before Django 1.7 that this actually caused issues. Anyway, I uploaded fixed packages. Since Django 1.7 migrated to jessie already, I didn't think raising the urgency would really do anything, so I left it to medium. Sorry again for the delay. As you might know, Django 1.7 will be soon available and as each new upstream major version, it brings many changes, some of them which are backwards incompatible (after a deprecation period covering 2 major versions): https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.7/releases/1.7/ https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.7/releases/1.7/#backwards-incompatible-changes-in-1-7 We intend to upload Django 1.7 to unstable as soon as it is available because we really want the latest version in jessie and the freeze is approaching fast. In preparation of that, I have uploaded a release candidate in experimental. Please test your package against Django 1.7 in experimental. If a new upstream version of your package is required, please package it now. If you can't upload it to unstable because it only works with Django 1.7, feel free to upload it to experimental too. If the current package works fine, please close this bug (or retitle it as a suggestion to implement Python 3 support and drop its severity to wishlist[1]). If it's broken, please tag it as confirmed. If it's not broken, but would benefit from further work, please tag it as confirmed but reduce the severity. If you have experimental in your sources.list you can install the latest version easily: $ sudo apt-get install -t experimental python-django python3-django [1] We have recently added Python 3 support with the addition of python3-django. Consider doing the same if your package is a Django application/library. Thank you for your help! Bug#763148: Prevent migration to jessie
Hi Moritz, On 30.09.2014 22:45, Moritz Mühlenhoff wrote: On Sun, Sep 28, 2014 at 11:27:03AM +0200, Andreas Cadhalpun wrote: So would you please explain why you see a problem? It has all been written before, I'm not going to repeat it all over again. We can pick libav _or_ ffmpeg for jessie+1. The above doesn't contain any explanation, why you think FFmpeg can't be supported in jessie. It does not even contain a pointer to where such an explanation has supposedly been written before. EOD for me. You made similar statements before and I must say that they are not part of what I consider a constructive discussion. I only remember two mails in which you provided some arguments against having both: In the early discussion on debian-devel you wrote [1]: But we still try to minimise such cases as much as possible. And for libav/ffmpeg this simply isn't managable at all due to the huge stream of security issues trickling in. We need definitely need to pick one solution only. The first sentence is about the general goal of reducing code duplication, which I agree with, because duplicated code copies usually make it harder to fix security issues. But in the case of FFmpeg and Libav, this is not really a problem, because FFmpeg upstream merges all security fixes from Libav. And if chromium would use the system FFmpeg libraries instead of the embedded FFmpeg copy, the overall code duplication wouldn't increase. Then you continued that supporting FFmpeg in addition to Libav would not be possible due to the huge amount of security fixes. But FFmpeg had only 7 CVEs in 2014, while e.g. MySQL had 37 and chromium had 64, which are much larger numbers. In the FFmpeg ITP bug you stated [2]: Exactly. It makes it really easy to not share concerns if you're not affected by the work imposed from the decision. While it is true that I'm not part of the security team, I would still be the one to actually package the upstream security fixes for FFmpeg. The security team would only have to review those and send out a DSA. Chromium using a local copy of the lib doesn't matter in practice since we need to spin updates for the browser security bugs anyway. So for chromium code duplication doesn't matter? Debian policy doesn't matter? And it doesn't matter because chromium needs so many security fixes that a few more don't hurt? This completely contradicts what you wrote in [1] with regard to code duplication and also with regard to the supposedly huge amount of security fixes for FFmpeg. As I have explained multiple times before, I don't see how your arguments would be sufficient for blocking FFmpeg from jessie.
