Bug#1050896: Packagesearch Copyright Statement

2023-10-01 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hi Enrico, hi Frannoe,
you have both contributed to packagesearch in the past (Frannoe
contributed the Spanish Translation, Enrico quite some code changes).

Bug #1050896 now states that I should clarify copyright:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1050896
I would like to switch to GPL3+ and would like your approval for this
license switch.

I would ask you to CC 1050...@bugs.debian.org if you are comfortable
with this change.
I have BCCed you, to protect your E-Mail Address in case you want it to
remain private. Please not that CCing 1050...@bugs.debian.org will
record your response and mail-address permanently by the BTS and make
it accessible to the internet.

Bug#1009987: bluez: Bluetooth service does not start

2022-04-21 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: bluez
Version: 5.64-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,
I installed testing non-free and immediately upgraded to unstable on a lenovo
thinkbook in the last two day. After that bluetooth was not working.
Note, that I did not test bluetooth while still being on testing.
After many attempts to get latest firmware I eventually figured out the root
cause: the bluetooth.service was not starting due
to a missing /var/lib/bluetooth directory.

Output for service status:

× bluetooth.service - Bluetooth service
 Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service; enabled; vendor
preset: enabled)
 Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Thu 2022-04-21 19:56:46 CEST;

code=exited, status=226/NAMESPACE
Apr 21 19:56:46 lenovo-ben systemd[1]: bluetooth.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.

Calling
  install -m 700 -d /var/lib/bluetooth
and restarting bluetooth service eventually fixed the issue.

It cost me a couple of hours to find the solution, for a less tech-savy user
bluetooth will be not usable. Therefore I set severity to grave.

Regards
Ben

Bug#684305: umlet: diff for NMU version 11.3-5.1

2013-06-01 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hello Gregor,

thanks for the NMU it looks ok to me, but I am not sure if it might not
break things for the future (I will deal with those with the next
upload, since I also intend to upload a new version of umlet).
Perhaps you can answer me some questions, with regards to the NMU?

  * "/usr/bin/umlet" looks like this:
---begin---
#!/bin/sh

# Include the wrappers utility script
. /usr/lib/java-wrappers/java-wrappers.sh

# We need java6 runtime
find_java_runtime java6

run_java -jar /usr/share/java/umlet.jar "$@"
---end---
Will this work with a java7 system only (i.e. once default-java
changed to java7)?

  * What is the recommended way to find/use a java version with at
least java6 compatibility? Lacking a proper way here was the
main reason, why I hardcoded the openjdk6 dependency.

  * You did add the option: -o"-encoding utf8" to the jh_build
command. Was this neccessary to make the package compile?

Btw. I see no reason to rush this bug, so I do not fully understand why
you NMUed this without giving any information beforehand. It is usually
a good idea to contact the maintainer first (and required by policy). It
is (was) on my agenda but might still take some time.

Best regards,

Ben

Oh sure, change the Changelog entry any way you like, certainly I forgot about the "Closes:" part...

Since it won't be an NMU you have to change the changelog entry anyways.

I'd be happier if the changelog entry rather looked like this:

+
+ * Non-maintainer upload.
+ * Do not rely on dirent.d_type when calling readdir as

Bug#688982: transmageddon: Transcoding does not work

2012-09-27 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: transmageddon
Version: 0.21-1
Justification: renders package unusable
Severity: grave

Dear Maintainer,

when I start transmageddon, select a video, do some output settings
and hit transcode, the GUI gets greyed out, writes "Transcoding

several input files (with different codecs) and output settings, same
behaviour.

I've successfully used transmageddon some time ago.

Bug#639076: Info received (Bug#639076: Update planned for packagesearch?)

2012-05-13 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hi,

unfortunately I have to correct me again. It seems that the latest
changes within QT/g++ (I guess it is the former) introduced some new
problems, so I failed to create the release today.
While I was able to solve some problems introduced by latest QT (no
longer working with multiple inheritance), I am lost at why my QT based
SortFilterModels stopped working. I keep getting crashes now when
dealing with debtags data. Half a day of debugging and trial and error
did not get me any closer to solving the problem.

I might find some time throughout the week to further investigate the
problem, but I have no real clue what could be causing the crashes.

I now see two options:
 1. I strip packagesearch of some important funkctionality and
upload it on tuesday, so you can get on with libapt transition
 2. You wait a while longer, to see, if I can fix packagesearch
until end of next week, else proceed with 1.

Please let me know about your preferences.

Sorry for this, but I did try my best..

Best regards

Ben

Packagesearch is practically ready for release, but I am currently
blocked by a bug witin libept (#670569) which returns the short instead
of the long description making packagesearch somewhat useless. I would
have prepared to have this one ironed out before, but I depend on Enrico
there. However, it seems, that the problem occurs even for current
versions of packagesearch with a recent libept, so I might as well
upload a new version now and hope for the problem to go away once a
fixed libept gets uploaded.

I will try to make some time this weekend.

thanks for your offer. I am actually in the final phase of preparing the

Do you know, when freeze of testing is to be expected?

2011-08-29 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hi,

I have a suspicion what is causing the problem:
/usr/include/xapian/keymaker.h declares a member variable named "slots"
and I am using QT, where this symbol might be redefined by some
makro-magic. I won't have time to create a fix within the next one or
two weeks, but I hope I can fix it afterwards.

I tried to run "m-a a-i virtualbox-ose-source" again and got the same

So it seems the source required for m-a is not available any more? With

Bug#532029: konsole: Does not support -T option as required by the policy

2009-07-15 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hi,

> I have read this bug report and created a patch that make konsole do nothing
> on -T.

That's definitely better then the current behaviour. Of course it would
be preferable to set the title and let it stay fixed when running with
-T option. One could argue, that ignoring the -T option is still a
violation of the policy, but I think that would be to dogmatic :-) If
its to much hassle to fix it, ignoring -T is a reasonable compromise.
Aspect oriented programming would come in handy here - all calls to
setting the title could be intercepted. To bad it's not used for konsole
(not that's used much anywhere else..).
The bug should not be closed though, but merely downgraded, because IMO
its still a bug if the -T option is ignored. Or it might get wontfix.

Benjamin

Bug#291734: Move to wastbin on different partitions silently deletes the file

2008-10-02 Thread Benjamin Mesing
severity 291734 minor
thanks

My sincere apologies the mistake was on my side. I've tried the same
under another account, and the behaviour is as expected. It seems that
somewhen in the past I must have checked the do not ask again box.
After figuring that out, I was able to reenabled the confirmation-dialog
by modifiying the gconf database settings.

Best regards

Bug#485980: flashplugin-nonfree: Fails to install for nspluginwrapper

2008-06-12 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: flashplugin-nonfree
Version: 1:1.5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When installing I get the following error message.

Setting up nspluginwrapper (0.9.91.5-2) ...
Setting up flashplugin-nonfree (1:1.5) ...
*** NSPlugin Viewer *** preloader not found
nspluginwrapper: no appropriate viewer found for
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

I had the flashplugin working at one point, but after an upgrade
of my system it stopped working (I am not sure what exactly changed).
I've tried to purge and reinstall nspluginwrapper and flashplugin-nonfree
with the result described above.

I've found a similar report for Ubuntu at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nspluginwrapper/+bug/235946

Running "nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so"
manually leads to the same error as above.

Bug#458884: 458884: packagesearch woes

2008-02-19 Thread Benjamin Mesing
tags 458884 +pending
thanks

Hello,

> Was this comment supposed to go to another package?

Yes, the comment was meant for libqt4-dev and reposted there (Cmp.
#458558). Since that bug won't be fixed I had to work around the bug.
Only two days ago I have uploaded a new version of packagesearch
containing a fix to my sponsor, who I hope will upload it to the archive
soon.

> packagesearch has been crashing at the drop of a hat for me for months
> (basically, whenever I leave it up for awhile and then come back to it).

This is known, and unfortunately not easy to fix. The problem is, that
the backend library (libept-dev) switched from working on a copy of the
apt-database to working on the database itself. However, it does not
handle it gracefully, if the package database changes (i.e. it causes a
crash). So packagesearch crashes whenever you do something after the
database has changed. A bug is open against libept-dev (#442841) and I
am periodically nagging Enrico to fix this bug - which would allow for
packagesearch to become stable again.

> Recently aptitude has become very insistent about giving it the boot,
> probably because of an upgrade to the apt tools.

This should be solved with the new upload.

Best regards and thanks for sticking with packagesearch

Bug#367731: Patch prepared

2007-08-31 Thread Benjamin Mesing
tag 367731 +patch
thanks

I have prepared a patch. I did not encounter any problems, the patch
seems straigtforward to me.

The only problem I was able to detect is, that when updating iptotal an
error is reported:

dpkg -i iptotal_0.3.3-6.1_amd64.deb
(Reading database ... 156305 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace iptotal 0.3.3-6 (using
iptotal_0.3.3-6.1_amd64.deb) ...
Stopping iptotal: iptotal.
Unpacking replacement iptotal ...
postrm called with unknown argument `upgrade'
dpkg: warning - old post-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
dpkg: ... it looks like that went OK.
Setting up iptotal (0.3.3-6.1) ...
Starting iptotal: iptotal.

However, the error is non-fatal (actually I believe it is not really a
problem, just a missing empty case-block in the postrm script) and the
recovery mechanism works just fine. Also, it is not caused by the patch
but is in the current code base. Since it is not critical, I refrained
from fixing it.

If you see any problems with the patch, please let me know. Otherwise
you could prepare a new upload based on the fix or I could ask my AM to
sponsor an NMU.

2007-08-19 Thread Benjamin Mesing

> This has been pending for quite awhile. Has something gone astray?

> I love packagesearch, and would love to get it back :)

Glad you like it :-)
The new version's full text search should be lighting fast. This is what
Enrico told me anyways :-), whose backend I am using.

Actually the fix (together with another one) has been sent to my
sponsor, who discovered a bug in the new version (which does not surface
on my machine). We might decide to upload the new version nevertheless.

Meanwhile you can get the binary package [1] if you have a amd64
architecture, or download the source [2] and build it yourself.

It would be also interesting, if you could reproduce the bug my sponsor
discovered. Just try out, if the related search works fine and tell me
the architecture you are on.

Thanks for your support

Ben

Bug#395465: libqt4-gui: QT4 GUI applications cause IceWM to crash when closing

2006-10-27 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: libqt4-gui
Version: 4.2.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello,

when closing a QT4-GUI applications this seems to crash my window manager IceWM.
E.g. all window decorations are lost.
This problem does not occur when running KDE.

I've encountered those crashes with e.g. the QT-Assistent, packagesearch as well
as a self compiled application as simple as:

#include
#include

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
QApplication a(argc, argv);
QMainWindow window;
window.show();
return a.exec();
}

Note that Ctrl+C'ing or killing the program does not result in a crash
of the WM.

I've made it severity grave, cause this prevents IceWM users from using any
QT4 GUI-application.

Best regards

Ben

Bug#391468: gatos obsolete?

2006-10-20 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hello,

so let me get things straight: the TV-software in the gatos package
works only with the original gatos drivers? Somehow the description gave
another impression.

Yes, I believe so.

So now Radeon AIW TV-in is supposed to work using Xvideo capable TV
applications, right?

I have tried kdetv which reproducable froze my *whole* system. Xawtv
showed the typical TV noise, but since it failed to bring up the options
and channel-select window, I was unable to test any further. But those
are issues for another bug report..

Btw. if anyone could recommend another Xvideo aware TV application I
would be very glad.

Ben

Thanks, that did the trick.
However, the patched seems not to achieve anything.
I am still getting the same error.

For the archive:
Attached you find the strace stripped of the sensitive environment

Straces are for running atitv as regular user and as root.

It looks pretty weird, I definitely do not have a Rage 128.
Current Kernel version is 2.6.18

I am using the regular X driver, no special gatos driver. When I had a
working setup about 2 years ago I had to use the special driver, but as
you mentioned, the website indicates, that this is no longer required.

I will send it as soon as I am back home.

It should be that one: All-in-Wonder Radeon (Radeon)
It definetely worked around 2years ago, when I last (successfully) tried the TV
capabilities of my card.

Bug#391933: Fix available

2006-10-09 Thread Benjamin Mesing
The problem seems result from libqt4 4.2, which requires additional
packages as build dependencies. Adding libsqlite0-dev libglib2.0-dev
results in the package being build fine again.
I am not sure if those dependencies should be pulled in automatically by
libqt4-dev but due to the release of etch at the doorstep I am going to
upload a fixed version of packagesearch.
We can figure out blame later ;-)

Best regards,

Ben

Bug#391933: packagesearch - FTBFS: cannot find -lsqlite

2006-10-09 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hello,

attached you find a bug report about a linker error that occured when
building packagesearch.
This build error surfaced only recently (and happens also on i386 and
probably all other architectures) and occurs only on systems with an up
to date set of packages. A diff of a successful and a non-successful
buildlog showed, that the most notable differences, which seemed related
to the bug report, were in using the latest QT4 and libmysqlclient15
packages:
QT 4.1.4 (worked) vs. QT 4.2 libraries (failed)
and
libmysqlclient15 5.0.24a-7 (worked) vs. libmysqlclient15 5.0.24a-9
(failed)

since there was nothing mentioned in a NEWS file, I suspect, that there
was an error introduces in one of those packages.

If the bug is caused by a bad/missing dependency in packagesearch please
let me know.
Note that I am using qmake for building my package.

The full bug log can be found at http://bugs.debian.org/391933

Please respond as soon as possible, since I will be gone soon and the
freeze of etch is at the doorstep.

I have attached the successfull and not-successful builddlogs for
packagesearch on s390.

Thanks,

Benjamin

Apologies, the icons didn't break with your upload. I've found the cause
for the icon breakage to be in cvs2svn transition performed for
packagesearch, which causes every new checkout to have broken icons.

 Ben

You might have contacted me before doing the NMU, especially since I
mentioned in the buglog, that I have a fix pending. With your upload the
icons are broken, which is due to a QT bug (#358972) wich I am waiting
to be fixed at one point.
Now that I think about it, it is better to have the RC bug fixed, even
by introducing a new bug. But had you told me so, I could have performed
the upload on my own.
Anyways, thanks for caring for the bug.

I've tried it with a pristine user - same problem. So the bug should be
easy to reproduce. Just launch evolution and create two additional
address books, the second will be an alias to the first.

The two address books test2 and test3 refer to the same address book.

thanks

I cannot confirm that the issue is fixed.

I've tried to create a new address book today, and encountered the same
problem of only creating an alias for the last existing one. Deleting
the alias, also deleted the content for the original address book.

Is the fix supposed to work only for clean installations (i.e. those
that did not encounter those problem before)?

I can prevent it by launching evolution from commandline, since errors
go to the console then.

I have no dbus installed.

Ok, installing dbus instantaneously settled the whole issue.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Bug#361995: evolution: Creating new address book creates only an alias, but deleting deletes the original folder

2006-04-11 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: evolution
Version: 2.4.2.1-2
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss
X-Debbugs-Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When I create a new address book, this only creates an alias to an exisiting
one (the last in the list of those available - but tried only once).
Deleting this new (alias) addressbook, however, does also delete the real
data behind it. Trying to access the original folder result in the following
error message:
We were unable to open this addressbook. Please check that the path
/.evolution/addressbook/local exists and that you have
  permission to access it.

Steps to reproduce:
  new -> addressbook
  delete the new addressbook
the content of the aliased folder will be lost

Thanks for the report. This issue is fixed in 2.0.2 which depends on
libapt-front now. libaot-front provides PIC compatability by default
(and so does libtagcoll now).

Bug#324032: Bug still open - but will be fixed soon

2005-09-13 Thread Benjamin Mesing
This bug is still open, because the -pic versions of libdebtags and
libtagcoll where drop recently. Their maintainers made the wrong
assumption, that this it is only a performance issue.

This bug will hopefully be fixed with the next upload of packagesearch,
which will be linked against libtagcoll and libapt-front.

2005-08-19 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Thanks for the report.

Well, #316628 was fixed. But apt seems to be changing its ABI at a daily
basis (its another version of apt that is currently missing) :-(
Currently I can't do anything about this, because QT3 is not yet
compiled with the GCC4, resulting in a crash when recompiling against
the latest apt :-(
However I plan to finish QT4 migration within the next 2-3 weeks, and
reupload the stuff working.

Greetings Ben

Sorry, no additional information available. If you can't reproduce the
bug, it seems I did create the directory this manually - though I can't
imagine why...
Thanks for investigation.

Bug#310528: cupsys: postinstall fails

2005-05-23 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-10
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When installing cupsys I got the following error message:

/var/lib/dpkg/info/cupsys.postinst: line 30: .: /etc/default/cupsys: is a
directory
dpkg: error processing cupsys (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 cupsys
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

As I can't remeber creating this directory manually, I think
it is a problem with the postinstall script.
I was able to solve the problem by manually deleting the directory
before (which was empty).

Greetings Ben

Bug#296433: umbrello bug news

2005-03-14 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Hello,

> Is there any news on this bug [0]? Its not clear from the bug log
> that its even present in a version distributed by Debian.
Sorry, no email informing me about additional information for this bug
was send to me, else I would have responded. Your mail was the first one
informing me about news.

> (Most importantly: is it present in testing?)
The bug can be reproduced with the document at
http://www.mesing.de/benjamin/searchplugin.xmi dragging the class
SettingsControl (and also other classes if you like) into the package
NPlugin (Don't drag the interfaces because this will often hang
Umbrello...). You will see that the package is gone from the default
package and is not in the NPlugin package. After this save the file and
reopen it - the classes which disappeared will not be present in the
class view any more.
I did also downgrade to the testing package, and was able to reproduce
the bug (though I had to move more than one package - because the first
did not disappear).
Btw. is there a way to downgrade using apt? I tried "apt-get install -t
testing umbrello" but this was refused because the package was "already
at the newest version".

> Ben, were you using a debian version of the package when you
> experienced the bug, or one from CVS?
No, I use the Debian unstable version - I would not have dared to file a
bug else. (The mention of CVS in my origrinal report referred to me
having the document with the data loss in a CVS archive so I could
restore it.)

Bug#296433: umbrello: classes completely disappearing when moved into packages

2005-02-22 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: umbrello
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

I have a fairly complex class diagram (around 30 classes ).
If I move classes into packages using the logical view and
drag'n drop, some of the classes do completely dissapear when dropped into
a package. This does not become immideately obvious when looking at the
class diagram where they are still displayed, but they are removed from the
logical view. After saving and loading the file the classes are also
removed from the class diagram so they are completly gone.

The classes which are correctly added to the package and which go to
/dev/null seem to be random, I can't find a pattern. Additionally moving
Interfaces into a package often hangs the application.

Fortunatelly I use CVS!

Greetings Ben
