Bug#496640: anon-proxy: fails to install if /etc/environment is empty

2008-08-26 Thread Johannes Wiedersich
Package: anon-proxy
Version: 00.05.38+20080710-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 6.1.

If /etc/environment is empty, installation or removing/purging of anon-proxy
fail. The reason is the grep call in
line 50 of anon-proxy.postinst fails, if /etc/environment is empty.

The same applies to line 29 of anon-proxy.prerm

As a result aptitude won't install/remove/upgrade any other package, making the
system unusable/breaking security
updates, etc.

Workaround: create/remove/edit /etc/environment to be either a file with at
least a 'space' in it or to be removed.

This only concerns one feature of qemu, and only concerns the data you
try to modify in the guest. It's data loss, but I won't call that
 *serious* data loss.

I won't be picky about what kind of data loss is serious or not. In this
particular case, user data are get corrupted without any user
interaction except opening and modifying a document. If you wouldn't
call that 'serious data loss' at least you should call it 'data loss'.
That means severity 'grave' [1], not important.

 I use

 qemu win98bug.img -hdb fat:rw:test

 I know from /usr/share/doc/qemu/qemu-doc.html that I shouldn't use
 non-ASCII filenames, etc.

Apparently data loss occurs, if the *contents* of the file contain some
 non-ASCII characters.
[snip]

I really doubt it is due do non-ASCII characters. It's probably due to
buffers not written to the disk when the guest is shutdown.

There has been a lot of code changes on that side in qemu 0.9.0, so I
really think the bug has been fixed. Care to retry with this version ?

I would like to. The only problem is that I am quite happy at the moment
with my *stable* system(s) and updating would require to also update
libc6, essentially moving too much of the system to testing/unstable.

Are you planning on releasing a backport? It will require some time and
space for me to install and setup another system for verification of
this issue.

Thanks,

Johannes

Bug#425968: tellico: wrong translation to German

2007-05-25 Thread Johannes Wiedersich
Package: tellico
Version: 1.2.5-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

The German translation is errenous.

'Editor' is translated as 'Verfasser', but 'Verfasser' means author. Correct
translation would be 'Herausgeber'.
'Publisher' is translated as 'Herausgeber', but 'Herausgeber' means editor.
Correct translation would be 'Verlag'.
'Organization' is translated as 'Unternehmen', but might be better translated
simply as 'Organisation'.

The resulting data base is unusable by external tools like Latex, hence 'causes
non-serious data loss'.

I include a bibtex export for a 'book', where I used Tellico's description as
content for the various fields.

Bug#419929: qemu: data loss: Virtual FAT disk images and windows 98

2007-04-18 Thread Johannes Wiedersich
Package: qemu
Version: 0.8.2-4
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

I use

qemu win98bug.img -hdb fat:rw:test

I know from /usr/share/doc/qemu/qemu-doc.html that I shouldn't use
non-ASCII filenames, etc.

Apparently data loss occurs, if the *contents* of the file contain some
non-ASCII characters.

1. Ordinary txt file

- In windows, I create a txt file and edit it with notepad.

- If the text of that file just contains ASCII characters everything is
fine.

- If I add one German umlaut A, everything is fine, I can change and save
the text. On reboot of the guest all changes will be lost!

2. Office document

- In openoffice.org on the host's etch, I create a document with one word
test in it (only the 4 letters), save it as 'Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP'
and copy it to the test-directory.

- I open and close the file ok from within windows 98 / office 2000 (word)
as long as I don't change anything.

- I add *one* letter to the test text -- testa and save the document
from M$ office on the guest and shutdown / reboot the guest

- the file is corrupted: word will report Document name or path invalid
(my translation from German). Openoffice will freeze on trying to open the
document.

This also happens to more complex documents.

The same image file works fine with the same office document (and many
others), if I don't use the above command line, but just use

qemu win98bug.img

and install samba 'properly' on the host.

Since there is also #419515, this seems to be the *only* choice as far as
data transfer between guest and host is possible.

It was quite a learning experience to me to get it working, however,

*Thanks for the good work*

and for providing a means of not having to shutdown debian, just to be able
to edit the odd word document that won't render properly in Openoffice.org!

Johannes

NB: the folder in quesiton is on a standard ext3 partition, if this is
relevant. I experimented a little with using one on a fat32 partition, but
that didn't make a difference IIRC.

Bug#340699: firestarter breaks nis

2005-11-25 Thread Johannes Wiedersich

Subject: firestarter breaks nis
Package: firestarter
Version: 1.0.3-1.1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***
Installation of firestarter breaks nis.

We have as configuration a nis server on a private network. Firestarter
is installed and options are set to allow all conections on that private
network.
The nis clients are set up with default debian configuration (+ lines
are added manually to /etc/passwd etc. as described in the documentation
to nis).

nis doesn't work; ie. a running nis still works, but when the system is
restarted nis breaks:

student2:/etc# /etc/init.d/nis restart
Starting NIS services: ypbind [binding to YP server .. backgrounded]

nis doesn't work and displays:

YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound

Noone can any longer login into the system via nis.
No information whatever is displayed in events or other in firestarter,
that any connection was refused or else.

Stopping the firewall, everything is working again:

student2:~# /etc/init.d/firestarter stop
Stopping the Firestarter firewall:done.
student2:~# /etc/init.d/nis restart
Starting NIS services: ypbind

Unfortunately, it took me some months to locate this problem: whenever
nis is started BEFORE firestarter it continues to work; the problem only
occurs, when nis is started AFTER firestarter (eg. after the next
reboot). Furthermore, no hints are found in firestarter's events list or
in the log-files. I suspect that other services apart from nis might be
affected as well.

WORKAROUND:
add the line

domain name_of_nis-domain server 192.168.0.xxx

to the configuration file /etc/yp.conf and nis is working as expected:

student2:/etc# /etc/init.d/nis restart
Starting NIS services: ypbind

Please, keep improving that otherwise very useful and easy-to-set-up
application!

Bug#325588: kile crashes with several tabs open

2005-11-03 Thread Johannes Wiedersich

Hello,

I tried the bug in sid (with kile version 1:1.8.1-3.1), and etch (with kile
version 1:1.7.1-3). And I could not reproduce the bug with the steps described
in the report. I even tried to change file encodings to generate errors (save a
latin1 file in utf-8) but it worked misteriously well.

As you say that you could reproduce it in different computers, could you please
send a step by step explanation to trigger the bug?

Hello,

This bug was reproduced on several Debian *SARGE* installations.

This are just 'standard' kde-workstations with almost no special
configuration. It doesn't matter if the files are on local
ext3-partitions or mounted via nfs.

I believe, the problem occurs when several tabs are open and when typing
occurs in the moment of autosave. Kile completely freezes and has to be
killed. Unsaved data in tabs besides the current one is lost. Try to set
the autosave interval to 1 minute, open files in several tabs and type
like crazy.

I'm not perfectly sure, if this is 100% related to kile or if things
like fam play a role; therefore I include the output of 'ps aux' just
after kile crashed. Kile doesn't respond to any input; the cursor
flashes at the last position.

Hope this is helpful. Thanks for offering that good software!

Bug#325588: kile crashes on auto-save, incurring data loss

2005-08-29 Thread Johannes Wiedersich
Package: kile
Version: 1:1.7.1-3
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

When two or more tabs in kile are opened and the autosave option is enabled
(default configuration), kile crashes if
- one is typing text at the moment of autosave
- another tab (or several other tabs) exists that contains unsaved data.

The data of the active tab is saved, changes of other tabs are lost. Kile
doesn't react to any input and has to be killed (killall kile).

workaround: deactivate the autosave option and save manually (or by frequently
compiling your document).

Since this behaviour can become quite annoying and since one is required to
restart kile and reenter all text since last save/autosave it might be very
desirable
to get a fix via security updates.

This bug was reproduced on several current and up-to-date Debian Sarge
installations.
