Bug#773853: ia32-libs-i386: Uninstallable due to libjpeg dependency

2014-12-23 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Package: ia32-libs-i386
Version: 1:0.4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

The package is uninstallable, because it depends on libjpeg62 >= 6b1-1

This is provided only by old libjpeg62:i386 (Bill Allombert) on version
6b1-3+deb7u1 but can not be achieved by new libjpeg62-turbo:i386 (Ondřej Surý)
on version 1:1.3.1-11 which Provides libjpeg62

As a result, aptitude refuses to install ia32-libs-i386 even if
libjpeg62-turbo:i386 is installed. Installing libjpeg62:i386 (Allombert) is not
an option because it conflicts with libjpeg62-turbo (Surý) installed on main
amd64 userland as a dependence of e.g. libcupsfilters1 .

The UPS is a Riello IDG1200. NUT's page indicates that the driver is
riello_usb

This driver is not available in Wheezy's nut-server 2.6.4-2.3+deb7u1
This driver is not available in Jessie's nut-server 2.6.5-4
This driver is available only in Sid's nut-server 2.7.2-1

Using 2.7.2-1 /var/log/syslog grow 368MiB in the 20 seconds between

Thanks for getting in touch about this. The resume of the above is that
yes, the issue is reproducible for me using nut-server 2.7.2-1 and I can
not use the driver in other versions because it is not there.

Many thanks

Hi Christian

I'll be happy to provide an updated package with the latest translations and
pointed to non-free (altough I'm not yet convinced the data are not free) but
I'll need a sponsor.

Give me a couple of days for packaging.

Bug#689466: icedove: Insane default causes data loss: "delete messages more than 30 days old" should NOT be selected by default

2012-10-02 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Package: icedove
Version: 3.1.13-1
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
I just installed Icedove and configured it for my IMAP account (on which I have
stored e-mails from quite a long time). For every folder I opened, it deleted
all messages older than 30 days.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I changed the settings on the IMAP account from "Delete messages more than <30>
days old" to "Don't delete any messages" which should have been the default.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
This stopped data loss, but I definitely loss the messages as they were deleted
from the server.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected a sane default on a program that is packaged for Debian.

Dear Noel Torres,
here is the CDS policy for the scientific data we distribute:

Catalogues available at CDS contain scientific data distributed
for free, for a scientific usage.
Companies including such data in their commercial products cannot
charge their clients for the data. Furthermore, users must be informed
of the origin of the data: this means an explicit reference to the service
provided by the CDS and also to the original author(s) of each catalogue.

Let us know if you need more information
best regards,

Bug#681654: About kstars-data-extra-tycho2 distributability

2012-08-20 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Hi Debian-Legal

On the package kstars-data-extra-tycho2 it has arisen a doubt about its
distributability: See bug #681654

I think there is no problem with data distributability, and just a minor issue
with package's Copyright file which I think I fixed on 1.1r1-8 at
http://mentors.debian.net/package/kstars-data-extra-tycho2

Please have a look at it. I'm willing to help with any further info or change
to the package.

Thanks in advance

Exactly. Public domain is not a License per se. It is a legal status which
means the data has no copyright owner.

Public Domain is a legal term with an exact meaning. Even if it is sometimes
used loosely I do not think a public institution as the ADC uses it in such
way.

The meaning of that legal status. This is exactly why FSF stated tha "some
copies may not be free". When a work is on Public Domain, any can use it for
anything, including relicense, modify, sell for profit... or include in
Debian.

May it be that you don't understand the legal meaning of Public Domain?

Bug#681654: Public Domain is enough

2012-07-20 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Hi

The sentence "All ADC data are public domain..." expresses clearly that the
data do not have, and do not need, a License to be redistributed.

Please see https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/07/msg00506.html which
fits almost exactly the case for these original data.

Also, please see the definition of Public Domain on
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.en.html where it reads:

>Public domain software
>
>Public domain software is software that is not copyrighted. If the source
code is in the public domain, that is a special case of noncopylefted free
software, which means that some copies or modified versions may not be free at
all.
>
>In some cases, an executable program can be in the public domain but the
source code is not available. This is not free software, because free software
requires accessibility of source code. Meanwhile, most free software is not in
the public domain; it is copyrighted, and the copyright holders have legally
given permission for everyone to use it in freedom, using a free software
license.
>
>Sometimes people use the term “public domain” in a loose fashion to mean
“free” or “available gratis.” However, “public domain” is a legal term and
means, precisely, “not copyrighted”. For clarity, we recommend using “public
domain” for that meaning only, and using other terms to convey the other
meanings.
>
>Under the Berne Convention, which most countries have signed, anything
written down is automatically copyrighted. This includes programs. Therefore,
if you want a program you have written to be in the public domain, you must
take some legal steps to disclaim the copyright on it; otherwise, the program
is copyrighted.

Thus, Public Domain is a perfectly aceptable legal status for the original
data, that allowed the original KStars developers to download, modify,
relicense and redistribute the data.

Package is fully distributable by Debian.

Regards

By the way, I've confirmed that Akarsh and Jason checked with Norbert
Zacharias from USNO (place where they get the data originally) that data are
Public Domain. Excerpt below:

Please see the Policies page here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070303235508/http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/questions_feedback.html#policies

The ReadMe file (the one you cited) does not mention otherwise, so the clause
"All ADC data are public domain unless otherwise stated in the "ReadMe" file.
The data are for scientific use only and have no commercial value." stands.

Erik Høg and C. Fabricius created the original data catalogue. Akarsh Simha

It may be my fault not to put the Policies page on the Copyright file, not
yours to overlook it.

I'll put it there and, if you agree, I'll package a new version which closes
this bug report.

Bug#641759: gimp: Gimp 2.6.11 crashes X session when opening a image

2011-09-19 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
So, your closing means that GIMP is not culprit at all of the failure? Is it
completely a responsability of the nvidia driver?

Bug#635554: kmail: Kmail does not download messages from the main IMAP folder

2011-07-26 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Package: kmail
Version: 4:4.4.11.1+l10n-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When downloading the new messages list from the main, upper folder of an IMAP
account, or when trying to "Check Mail", kmail does not show any new message
and fires an error:

>

El proceso para el protocolo imap://localhost terminó inesperadamente.

That is: the kio_imap process died unexpectedly. The server is OK, as I've
tried with Evolution and it has a lot of messages Kmail has not shown me. There
are gigs of available disk and memory, so it is not that kind of problem.

Problem does not arise when clicking on a child folder, just on the principal
or when checking for new mail.

tcpdumping (well, wiresharking) the connection shows this:

Bug#526379: gnumeric does not allow anymore to copy

2009-04-30 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Package: gnumeric
Version: 1.9.4-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

It is completely impossible to copy, either using Ctrl-C, Edit->Copy or
right-mouse->Copy.

Doing any of these causes this to appear in the stdout/stderr:

** (gnumeric:5985): CRITICAL **: wbcg_edit_finish: assertion `IS_SHEET
(wbcg->editing_sheet)' failed

It is almost impossible to use a spread sheet if you can not copy formulae.
