The bug basically states that during migration from 1.4.x to 2.x, the
conversion of the mailbox data fails.

Does this affect upgrades from Evolution 1.0.5 as well? If not, it
simply /cannot/ be considered release critical, as 1.0.5 is the version
currently found in Woody.
The short answer, "Yes, I strongly *suspect* it does."
The long answer:
I don't have Evolution 1.0.5 installed, so I have not been able to test
this, and I'm not confident that installing an older version of
Evolution would actually migrate my mail data back, but the original bug
report showed this URL:

   http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=69566
Which has been moved to here:
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=269566
This bug is now marked Major and is slated for 2.2, and it has many
reports associated with it.

On 22 February, 2005, JP Rosevear stated: (Comment #27 in the bug report)
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=269566#c27
So we've prevented the crash now. It seems to happen when e-d-s
can't load for some reason. We'll see what happens with new reports.
This makes me suspect that the bug has been resolved in their CVS, but I
suspect that Debian isn't using that fixed version at this stage.
*However*, I note that v2.2.1 is now in Unstable, which if I'm reading
correctly from the Gnome Bugzilla does not have this problem.

So, I would propose that this bug stay open until v2.2.1 is in Testing,
then I'll do another migration using the backed up mail data from 1.4.6
and test again.

If you've gotten to here wondering if I'm ever actually going to answer
your question about v1.0.5, here it is:

While I understand and completely agree with your sentiment about
upgrading from Woody, Evolution 1.0.5, to 2.0.3, I strongly suspect that
v1.0.5 is affected, though I do not have any actual proof of that.

Kind regards,

Bug#291757: How to Downgrade to 1.4.6-5

2005-01-22 Thread Onno Benschop
After my experience, I thought I'd also share how I got my email back
to a usable state, seeing that this bug makes it impossible to use 2.x
with your current email.

Suggestions exist on the web to start-up without an ~/evolution folder
by renaming it and importing the data, but I'm not keen to manually
import 2.1Gb of email.

Downgrading was surprisingly simple:

1. Add some source lines to /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Let apt do the work

This breaks down to:

Add these two lines to sources.list:

deb http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2004/08/17/debian unstable main contrib
non-free
deb http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2004/08/17/debian-non-US unstable/non-US
main contrib non-free

(That date is the last date that 1.4.6-5 was available in the debian
package system.)

Then:

apt-get update && apt-get install evolution=1.4.6-5

All it installed was that package and it all worked for me from there.

I'll add reports as I go if any other things come out to bite me :-|

Bug#291757: evolution: Upgrade from 1.4.6 to 2.0.3 fails and Evolution is *UNUSABLE*

2005-01-22 Thread Onno Benschop
Package: evolution
Version: 2.0.3-1.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I am logging this bug report into BTS, because if I was aware of this bug in
Ximain's bugzilla, I would not have upgraded this package.

http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=69566

The bug basically states that during migration from 1.4.x to 2.x, the
conversion
of the mailbox data fails.

Users installing this version of Evolution should know that:
* Existing ~/evolution data is not lost
* The new format of the data is stored in ~/.evolution
* Migrations do not always fail, but there are presently 21 duplicate
reports going back to 2004-11-16 with this problem

Takuo KITAME, please note that I understand that this is not a bug that you
as a maintainer have likely any influence on, but my report is intended
specifically
to communicate to other evolution users that there are serious issues with
installing
this version of evolution.

I'd appreciate it if you left it open until the bug is resolved upstream.
