We now have llvm-toolchain-{15,16,17,18} in testing and have now -19
being prepared in unstable. As for -18, this is a blocker to keep the
number of llvm-toolchain versions in testing to a maintainable number.

'reopen' may be inappropriate when a bug has been closed with a version;
all fixed versions will be cleared, and you may need to re-add them.
Bug reopened
No longer marked as fixed in versions llvm-toolchain-18/1:18.1.8-9.

Keep in mind it's not a single package exactly. It's llvmlite, but also
numba, and then every package that uses numba (critical for a bunch of
Frederic-Emmanuel Picca's packages, for instance, and optionally used by
several of mine)

I am sorry but I don't think it is reasonable to keep/maintains all the
versions of LLVM for a single package.

Bug#1068961: llvm-toolchain-18: block migration to testing: to many llvm-toolchain versions in testing

2024-06-26 Thread Drew Parsons

If possible, it would be sensible in principle for debian to drop
llvm-toolchain-15 and llvm-toolchain-16.
i.e. only keep llvm-toolchain-14 (for llvmlite/numba)
and the latest llvm-toolchain

It belatedly occurs to me that it could be dangerous to drop the interim
versions of llvm, since at some point llvmlite will upgrade its llvm
support, and won't necessarily jump directly to the most recent llvm.

The latest llvmlite (released two weeks ago) now builds against
llvm-toolchain-15,

Bug#1068961: llvm-toolchain-18: block migration to testing: to many llvm-toolchain versions in testing

2024-06-25 Thread Drew Parsons
Source: llvm-toolchain-18
Followup-For: Bug #1068961

To give some more context to the issue of llvm-toolchain versions,
we need to keep llvm-toolchain-14 in the archive (for the time being)
since it is required by llvmlite. llvmlite is used by numba, which
would offer valuable acceleration to python numerical packages,
if the numba/llvmlite/llvm situation were more reliable.

The reasons why llvmlite is stuck on the old version of llvm
are discussed at
https://llvmlite.readthedocs.io/en/latest/faqs.html#why-doesn-t-llvmlite-always-support-the-latest-release-s-of-llvm
https://github.com/numba/llvmlite/issues/1048
https://github.com/numba/llvmlite/issues/1062
see also https://github.com/numba/llvmlite/issues/914

In short, llvm is unstable (in the sense of changing API every
release), and llvmlite does not have the resources to keep up with the
ongoing changes.

If possible, it would be sensible in principle for debian to drop
llvm-toolchain-15 and llvm-toolchain-16.
i.e. only keep llvm-toolchain-14 (for llvmlite/numba)
and the latest llvm-toolchain
(likewise drop llvm-toolchain-17 once llvm-toolchain-18 is available in
testing).

Perhaps other packages have the same issue as llvmlite, that they need
specific older versions of llvm.

Currently we we have llvm-toolchain-{14,15,16,17} in testing whereas RC
bugs in the verious versions of llvm-toolchain do not get addressed:

#1067005 in llvm-toolchain-18
#1068185 and #1057586 in llvm-toolchain-16
#1036596 and #1068840 in llvm-toolchain-14

Seeing that some of the bugs are unaddressed for a long time, that many
versions of llvm-toolchain in the archive seem to be to much to handle
for the maintainers. As there is also no progress in removing old
versions from the archive, I propose to not let any new versions of
llvm-toolchain-X migrate to trixie until the number of versions is
reduced to a maintainable number.

Please do not downgrade or close this bug report before contacting the
release team.

Agreed. I will have a look to the various issues in the next few weeks.

Cheers

Sylvestre
