I just looked: http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelist&word=proftpd&version=stable&arch=i386 etc/init.d/proftpd provided by: net/proftpd, net/proftpd-pgsql, net/proftpd-mysql, net/proftpd-ldap If you deleted it, it may not be recreated on reinstall. Of course it installs perfectly in a fresh install on sarge (just verified to be sure, but it's a quite macroscopic issue to be never pointed before, don't you think so?), as well as in upgrading from a previous one. Would you please purge and install it again, and post logging?
