Bug#399387: lvm2: fails to load libncurses at boot when root under lvm

2006-11-19 Thread Romain Beauxis
Package: lvm2
Version: 2.02.06-3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi !

Every upgrade that recreates my initramfs leads to a full failure of the
next boot.

Failure is because my root is under lvm, and the kernel fails to load
the volumes at boot and issue a log like:
vgchange: cannot locate libncurses.xxx

Then boot is frozen and nothing can be done.

The solution I do is to boot on a seperate live CD and then mount back
all the system, and chroot into it and then dpkg-reconfigure
linux-image-2.6.18-xx...

I don't know where to put that bug since it involves many packages, so I
send there since it is at least an issue on vgchange.

Also setting as critical since it leads to a complete unusable system.

Romain

initramfs-tools is currently responsible to create the initramfs. Also I
can't reproduce this on my own machines.

Failure is because my root is under lvm, and the kernel fails to load
the volumes at boot and issue a log like:
 vgchange: cannot locate libncurses.xxx

So the lib is missing, why?

I don't know where to put that bug since it involves many packages, so I
send there since it is at least an issue on vgchange.

It correctly depends on libncurses5.

  So what?

The package is installed, if it is not available, this is a local
 problem.

Right, but my system fails to boot on every kernel upgrade so I guess it is
not the expected behaviour.

Also you did not stated why you droped the severity to important, so I'll
put it to critical again until I have someone looking at this issue.

Don't play severity ping-pong. You have to provide more informations.

Ok, I'll come up with another test of this issue.

On the other hand, you explicitly avoid to dig on that issue, I might be
wrong, but if I am not, which I am quite sure, then you loose time to solve
it.

And if confirmed, the severity would not have been false.
