The package has a lot of open bugs, most of them without any comment from the maintainer. The maintainer clearly hasn't had enough time to maintain that package. The other (plugin) packages could be maintained there too. Not that I care much about irssi myself, but it would be a shame to refuse the help of people willing to help, particularly when it is clearly needed. David Pashley has unfortunately been unable to dedicate enough time to maintain irssi, promising several uploads he never did. Gerfried Fuchs already mentioned interest in adopting irssi, and agreed on maintaining it on collab-maint. This seems to be the best way forward, as this will allow David to continue to help with maintaining irssi, if he wants to.
