err... just realized that doesn't make sense :)

I'll add a Conflicts: gromacs (<= 3.3.1-7).

It sounds like that will be the least disruptive overall. Thanks very
much.

I'll be making a new upload of gromacs soon and will add a versioned
Conflicts: radiance (<= 3R8+20070924.dfsg-1), to ensure we don't
accidentally end up with the clashing versions in testing.

Exactly. About 75% of the programs were made to be run from scripts
and/or other programs to prepare materials and do a lot of other stuff.
You can even define a script as material, which returns values depending
on the input... Also you render in a cluster usually, radiance is way to
slow to render large images on a single machine as it was not optimized
for speed but for correctness (mainly for simulating lightning).

As Your package is the older package, and genbox is probably not one of
the very often used tools, I'll rename it in Debian.

I guess that's ok for you?

Cheers,

Bernd

I agree with Manuel on this point; also, since GROMACS runs are often
set up on one machine and then uploaded to a number-crunching cluster
somewhere else (which is quite possibly running a different OS
entirely), script breakage due to changing the command name is even more
likely. #403879 wasn't a problem since that command is nearly unused,
but it's the rare GROMACS run that *doesn't* need genbox.

However, radiance also ships a large number of files in /usr/bin, which
I assume are scriptable too? Is renaming the command likely to cause
equivalent problems for your users?

As a GROMACS user, I'd prefer to keep the name "genbox" since it's one
of the tools in the GROMACS suite that is used quite often and a lot of
my scripts would need an update to work on a name change. I think there
are more people in the same situation.

On the other hand, one of GROMCAS's tools has been renamed already.
(ffscan, renamed to g_ffscan.) Since this one is rarely used (at least
by me), I didn't find that bothering.

I don't mind if genbox will be renamed. I just wanted to express my
concerns.

Best regards
Manuel

Ignore my last mail please.

I can also rename genbox to radgenbox.
I guess your package attracts more people, so it should probably keep
the binaries name. On the other side - if genbox is only rarely used in
gromacs, the better thing would be to rename it there probably.

Cheers,

Bernd

I could also add a diversion to handle this. Not sure if there's somebody out
there who is interested in both packages at the same time.

I suggest:
rename genbox to g_genbox, add a comment to gromacs' README.Debian,

what's your opinion?

Package: gromacs, radiance
Severity: serious
Justification: policy violation

hi,

both gromacs and radiance ship `/usr/bin/genbox' but do neither conflict nor
add a diversion, thus fail to be installed in the same environment:
