imho it's incomplete - due to the nature how dependencies are handled,
m-a thinks that if /any/ version of virtualbox-ose is installed, the
correct package here would be the newest available version, which is not
necessarily what you have on your system.

however, this is not really fixable in m-a i think, but the manpage
could probably more clear about it.

Thanks Daniel, we found the missing piece of information, above, and I
am back in business.

Needless to say, I don't often build from source and I am not a frequent
user of m-a, which says on its man page:

"auto-install | a-i
auto-install is followed by one or more packages
desired for installation. It will run prepare to configure your
system to build packages, get the package source, try to build it for
the current kernel and install it."

The part in question is "get the package source", which sounds to me
like it absolves me of the responsibility for getting the source. At
least that is how I read it. Is the man page wrong or incomplete?

Thanks again,
Clayton

to make sure we don't miss anything, here are (probably obvious) things
you should be aware of:

1. Do a full update of your system, as root:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

2. Install virtualbox-ose-source, as root:

apt-get install virtualbox-ose-source

3. Build the virtualbox-ose module, as root:

m-a a-i virtualbox-ose

4. The buildlog is located at /var/cache/modass.

5. Please send the *matching* build-log to your build-attempt to this
bug, usually this would be one with the newest timestamp in its
   filename.

Except I just tried to do exactly that:

"module-assistant auto-install virtualbox-ose"

and it very quickly stopped with an error, pointing me to a build log
file that contains one line:

"Build log starting."

with no error messages of any kind to suggest what might be wrong.
