regarding tar: locks machine attempting to write to tape drive
to be marked as done.

This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with.

command : tar -czf /dev/ht0 /www /home
locks the machine.  no activity on the tape drive.  the tape drive is a
travan certance.  am i using the correct device?  it has this listed in
the messages log:

As per email exchange with submitter, this appears to be a kernel/driver
problem and not a problem in tar.
