Bug#564010: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686: fails to boot
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-3 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system I am successfully running 2.6.31. I recently upgraded to 2.6.32 and the system does not boot any more. There was a small itch during installation: I was instructed that firmwares 'iwlagn: iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode\nr8169: rtl8168d-2.fw, rtl8168d-1.fw' would be needed. I could not find iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode (it's not on intel's website and not in the the firmware-iwlwifi package) nor the realtek firmwares... Anyway I guess that those files missing would only result in the network not working, not in the kernel not booting. I guess it would be nice to post the boot log. How can I retrieve the boot log from a kernel that fails to boot? I checked in /var/log but could not find any file with a matching creation date... From what I can see on the screen during the boot process, there MIGHT be an issue with mounting the root partition, or accessing the HD all together. But that seems weird. I am saying this because some of the last messages I can read concern accessing sda... -- Package-specific info: ** Kernel log: boot messages should be attached ** Model information not available ** PCI devices: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub [8086:2a40] (rev 07) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff40] Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- TAbort- MAbort+ SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 Capabilities: access denied Kernel driver in use: agpgart-intel 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff40] Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+ Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 31 Region 0: Memory at fd80 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M] Region 2: Memory at d000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] Region 4: I/O ports at b400 [size=8] Expansion ROM at unassigned [disabled] Capabilities: access denied 00:02.1 Display controller [0380]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a43] (rev 07) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff40] Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 Region 0: Memory at fdc0 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M] Capabilities: access denied 00:1a.0 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 [8086:2937] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff40] Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 16 Region 4: I/O ports at b880 [size=32] Capabilities: access denied Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd 00:1a.1 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 [8086:2938] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff40] Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 Interrupt: pin B routed to IRQ 21 Region 4: I/O ports at b800 [size=32] Capabilities: access denied Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd 00:1a.2 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 [8086:2939] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:ff40] Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx- Latency: 0 Interrupt: pin D routed to IRQ 19 Region 4: I/O ports at b480 [size=32] Capabilities: access denied Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd 00:1a.7 USB Controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 [8086:293c] (rev 03) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
Bug#564010: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686: fails to boot
OK, shame on me: after I wrote this bug report I decided to try to read the kernel message in details to understand more about it and while I was doing so the kernel booted. The explanation is that since the realtek firmware are missing, the kernel fails to turn on the ethernet link, and hangs there for some time, then gives up and carry on with the boot process. So this is no longer a critical bug. Sorry about the false alarm. However, there is still a problem with the packaging: where are the firmwares required?
