Hi,

I have update  my system, and guake not work .
Using wheezy/sid.

I think the problem is obviously notification-daemon.

/var/log/apt/history.log:
Start-Date: 2011-08-14  04:47:17
Commandline: apt-get dist-upgrade
Upgrade: notification-daemon:i386 (0.5.0-3, 0.7.1-3)
End-Date: 2011-08-14  04:47:36

I had the same problem but found that if I installed the package 
notify-osd (currently at 0.9.30-1 in sid) then guake now launches correctly.

Seems like guake (or python-notify) should have a dependency on notify-osd.
