Bug#685054: Bug#688714: libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 is now co-installable with :amd64 (in sid and experimental)

2012-10-16 Thread Michael Carr
Dear Andreas Beckmann --

First, I would like to say Thank You for the patch upload to
experimental / sid as a workaround solution.

Second, I have a question(s) about the package migrating to the testing branch:

I was wonder if it will migrate to wheezy at some point during the
freeze so that the package is available for the upcoming stable
release? And if possible, any time frame?

The reason I ask is that it has been more than 10 days and has the
package has not migrated. I realize that this is probably due to the
current freeze that is in place to prepare for the new Debian stable.
Also, according to the QA Package page,
http://packages.qa.debian.org/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers.html, the
following is stated The package has not yet entered testing even
though the 10-day delay is over. Check why. and Not touching package
due to block request by freeze (contact debian-release if update is
needed). Perhaps the debian-release team needs to be contacted to
allow the package, or maybe it just takes longer to test that packages
work properly during a freeze.

Thanks again.

The solution in sid is a HACK. A proper solution has been proposed to
the Release Team, but hasn't gotten any feedback, yet:

I just applied a crude HACK that makes libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
co-installable with libgl1-nvidia-glx:amd64 to the packages in sid and
 experimental.

Thank you.

Does this mean that 32bit support has been removed from NVIDIA drivers
because of an ongoing transition to multiarch? Do we need to add the
i386 architecture to install libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386? I really don't
want to enable several architectures because that creates more confusion
about what packages of what architecture are installed than anything
else, and it creates weird dependency problems. If we install
libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386, how do we know which version is going to be
used, and how do we make sure that the amd64 version will be used
whenever possible? What happens when the bug is fixed, do/can we just
remove libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386, and how will we know when we can do that?
Can't we just have i386 support as we do now until it finally becomes
obsolete (hopefully soon ...)?
