FWIW, Ansgar has been doing this for clive during the Squeeze life cycle, and intends to do so for libquvi (the backend shared behind recent enough versions of clive, cclive and quvi) and friends during the Wheezy life cycle. From my remote point-of-view, it looks like the clever move. I'm not sure how many alternative implementations of such scrapping code we want to support in a Debian stable release. So, if *I* wanted to explain the release team why youtube-dl should be part of Wheezy, granted freeze exceptions, and maintained through -updates, I think my next action would be to explain what youtube-dl does, that libquvi -backed software don't. That clearly covers youtube-dl. As for splitting the package, that wouldn't make sense; changes to youtube typically require code changes to youtube-dl to work around, not "data" changes. But that is, in a sense, the nature of packages/programs that deal
with web scrapping: all of them are highly subject to drastic changes.
(Unfortunate, I know). But that affects youtube-dl, clive, cclive,
get-flash-videos and many, many other packages in a similar vein.
I want to work with you in getting youtube-dl in wheezy and, also, not
breaking other programs like freevo. What can we do?

Too many changes? Which ones? Compared to my last upload, there aren't
really. The strictly needed is just a one-liner, but I would like to
keep my uploads simple (the code of youtube-dl is reasonably
straightforward---and I will be probably be making some
simplifications upstream).
I am already looking to upload a new version with some fixes for sites
other than youtube (and, actually, fixes for downloading the videos in
a youtube playlist---say, a video course).

The plan is to always upload things speedily, as I have done for the
past few years. I *personally* use youtube-dl and I recommend it to my
friends, which means that I care enough to always be uploading things.
It is by no means a problem to me to upload backported stuff.
In summary: I want to keep youtube-dl up-to-date for stable releases also.
