Bug#757543: MUST NOT say "***** REBOOT LINUX *****" before safe to do so

2014-08-09 Thread 積丹尼 Dan Jacobson
forcemerge 757543 757544
thanks
The main damage appears to be tons of missing .so files!
Good thing I can use dpkg -V !
You probably want to use two messages
BEGINNING TO
DONE DOING ... YOU MAY NOW SAFELY REMOVE...
Thanks.

Bug #757544 [e2fsprogs] Don't say "* FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *" before
actually finished modifying!

Bug#757543: MUST NOT say "***** REBOOT LINUX *****" before safe to do so

2014-08-09 Thread Theodore Ts'o
severity 757543 normal
thanks

I agree this should be fixed, but what e2fsck was doing was at best a
contributory factor. #1, the user pulled the disk while it was still
being active. And #2, e2fsck is writing back the updated superblock
and block group descriptors. If any of these changes had been lost, a
second run of e2fsck should have fixed them.

The fact that the disk did additional damage on a power fail which
caused the data loss is the disk's problem, not e2fsck's.

I'll fix this, but even so, unexpected power lost should have caused
anything other than a need to rerun e2fsck. I suspect the fault of
the hardware.

Bug#757543: MUST NOT say "***** REBOOT LINUX *****" before safe to do so

2014-08-08 Thread 積丹尼 Dan Jacobson
Package: e2fsprogs
Version: 1.42.11-2
Severity: grave
File: /sbin/fsck.ext4

fsck MUST NOT say
"* REBOOT LINUX *"
before completely writing and syncing to disk!

Simply kindly say that as the last thing before exiting.

Otherwise: the user will assume the system has halted and it is time for
him to reboot. Indeed after a few minutes of waiting for a shell prompt
back he indeed very much thinks that is what your are trying to tell
him.

And he reboots.

And finds he has scrambled his disks.

All because he didn't wait and believed the message.

grave -- causes data loss.

And days of work to repair -- if at all possible.
