I exercise myself to raid with debian and i have tested to remove one 
disk to see how debian react.

at boot screen lock for 10 ~ 15 sec and going the initramfs shell

Vmware in RAID1 or Server SCSI drive RAID1 (MBR)
test with jessie 8.1 netinst in i386 or amd64

No problem with wheezy
7.8 netinst

... I have the same problem on an ARM system (QNAP TS-420U) where the 
root-partition is installed on GPT-RAID1 (3 active disks and one spare) 
and started via uboot from flash memory.
