Bug#801106: sddm still fails to start

2015-10-30 Thread John DeVito
I am also having this issue after performing all available Stretch updates on
27 Oct 2015 and I figured I would chime in with my observations in the event
that it might be helpful. Looking through the Xorg.0.log file I see that the
/run/dbus directory was completely missing. I verified this looking through
the file system. I reinstalled Stretch using the Alpha 4 netinst amd64 CD. My
desktop environment was KDE Plasma 5, and I chose that as the DE on reinstall
as well. I got the same issue. If I change the display manager from sddm to
kdm the /run/dbus directory (and the socket contained within) were created. I
monkeyed around and got KDE4 to come up, but there were other problems
(probably because I was messing around a lot). The issue appears to be
specific to sddm and KDE Plasma 5.

Have you checked ~/.xsession-errors ? Or /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Or any other log files to determine what went wrong?

Nothing in either that pertains to the starting of a KDE session.

Have you checked ~/.xsession-errors ? Or /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Or any other log files to determine what went wrong?

Please try applying this patch to the /lib/systemd/system/sddm.service file:

And see if that resolves the issue.
Anyway, "failed to bring up the login screen" is very broad - what
exacly happened? Did it crash? Did you get a tty, or just a black
screen?

Cheers,

No, I am not using Plymouth.

"Failed to bring up the login screen" is as it says. The screen gets
switched into graphical mode (blank) but nothing ever displays on it. I
can bring up a TTY using an alt-Fkey combination but nothing graphical.

2015-10-28 Thread Gary Dale
Package: sddm
Version: 0.12.0-4
Followup-For: Bug #801106

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
I restarted my system this morning but it failed to bring up a login screen

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
Booted to rescue mode and did an update/full-upgrade. When that didn't fix
the problem, I installed xdm.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
I can now get to a login screen and run a gui.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
