Dear Robert, Steve and Michael, how do you think about adding https://github.com/ConsoleKit2/ConsoleKit2 to the archive as a maintained alternative to consolekit? Kind regards Harald Jenny

This was the last commit ever done to consolekit upstream https://cgit.freedesktop.org/ConsoleKit/commit/?id=af75e100dc4d4fac2e1633aa134e40e390d38918 (2013) It's been dormant for much longer before that. Active maintenance stop much earlier, around 2011. -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth? signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

So it forces me to *install* a different > init system: You said, it "forces a dependency to a special init system". And this is simply wrong. You are mixing up systemd as init system with systemd-logind here. systemd-logind is a maintained alternative to consolekit. consolekit is dead upstream, unmaintained and has many design flaws. That it breaks certain setups like in #92 was just the last straw that broke the camels back. Keep in mind, I'm the former maintainer of consolekit, so I very much know about its shortcomings. Hope that clarifies. Michael -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth? signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

The removal of consolekit does not enforce a switch > to a different init system. You are probably mistaking systemd with > systemd-sysv. Please read the package descriptions carefully. Please read the bug report carefully. I do not claim it forces me to use, it forces me to *install* systemd due to libpam-systemd as alternative to consolekit. So it forces me to *install* a different init system: $ LANG=C apt-cache depends libpam-systemd libpam-systemd Depends: libc6 Depends: libpam0g Depends: systemd systemd:arm64 systemd:i386 Depends: libpam-runtime Depends: dbus dbus:arm64 dbus:i386 |Depends: systemd-shim Depends: systemd-sysv systemd-sysv:arm64 systemd-sysv:i386 Therefore it force me to install systemd directly or through the systemd-sysv dependency. There was *NO* need to install systemd on my system before: $ LANG=C dpkg -l "systemd*" Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Architecture Description +++-==---= un systemd (no description available) un systemd-sysv (no description available) As I stated before: "Without consolekit the dependency to libpam-systemd as alternative to consolekit forces me to install systemd without any further benefit." As on request I reread the Bug report that causes the consolekit removal: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=92 My quick summery: Device did not work with consolekit, but libpam-systemd. Solution: remove consolekit. Briliant! BTW: yubikey works fine here. Regards Bene pgpUwUgYhpRv1.pgp Description: Digitale Signatur von OpenPGP

The removal of consolekit does not enforce a switch to a different init system. You are probably mistaking systemd with systemd-sysv. Please read the package descriptions carefully. So please readd consolekit to the archive. Since this bug report is based on a false premise, I'm closing it. Please read why consolekit was removed from Linux-architectures in the first place. -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth? signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
