Anyhow, just to be perfectly clear (and in the following I'm not speaking about changing a splash or not, but in general): if debian-cd would build live images diverting from the official live-* config or tools, we would not support such images and fall back to build them ourselfs again. Instead, let me point this out again, please commit directly to debian-next branches (which are world-writable as documented in live-manual). About modifying live-images
Steve, I'm rather unhappy about seeing local modifications done on top of live-images here: http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/debian-cd/pettersson-live.git/tree/available/run-30live-build please don't do that and either tell us about things you find out, or even commit them directly to the debian-next branch of live-images in the first place (that branch is world-writable, see live-manual for instructions). Bug#746746: syslinux 6.x to unstable on 2014-05-17
now that the last revision of syslinux left NEW i would like to upload syslinux 6.x to unstable in two weeks (2104-04-17). however, syslinux 6.x has a few incompatible changes: * upstream: with the addition of efi support, syslinux modules are now stored in a different location, e.g: /usr/lib/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 -> /usr/lib/syslinux/modules/bios/vesamenu.c32 * upstream: since syslinux 5.x, some bootloaders need additional loader files (ldlinux.*) to be copied to the medium. for syslinux/extlinux this is already handled automatically, for the 'manual' bootloaders (isolinux/pxelinux), this needs to be done manually. * upstream: since syslinux 5.x, modules have dependencies, e.g: using vesamenu.c32, you also need libutil.c32 and libcom32.c32 for more information, see: http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Library_modules * debian: with the addition of efi support, syslinux bootloaders are packaged separately, e.g.: isolinux.bin is in isolinux, pxelinux is in pxelinux, etc. packages re-using the syslinux bootloaders should depend on these individual bootloader packages. the following packages are affected, i've send patches accordingly: * debian-cd: #746746 * debian-installer: #746743 * ipxe: #746747 * libguestfs: #746748 * refit: #746749 * unetbootin: #746751 * live-build: will do myself * syslinux-themes-debian: is orphaned; will take care of that -- Address:Daniel Baumann, Donnerbuehlweg 3, CH-3012 Bern Email: daniel.baum...@progress-technologies.net Internet: http://people.progress-technologies.net/~daniel.baumann/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-cd-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". still no torrents for debian-live 5.0.5
Hi, as Steve wrote[0], he's in charge for creating the torrents, so that Matthias[1] can seed them. I said[2] I'm going to send a mail to the list for 5.0.5 to let people now that they should create the torrents, that was before Steve said he's in charge. When I send the 'please sync 5.0.5-live images from live.d.n to cdimage.d.o' mail to Steve on 2010-06-29, I assumed that he would create the torrents after the sync was done. He didn't, so I've asked back (Matthias was in the CC). I've got no reaction to that mail whatsoever :/ So I'm back here: Could the person in charge for creating the torrents please create the torrents for 5.0.5-live, so that Matthias can seed them? The ones for 5.0.5 (regular d-i) were instantly there, just as everytime they get created so promptly when there's a new point release, so i don't think there should be any problems in doing the ones for live images too. If there are problems, please let me know. Bug#507706: Missing sources for d-i components/kernel of etch-n-half images
Package: cdimage.debian.org Severity: serious Hi, unfortunately, a similar issue as with #497471 arised. for 4.0r4, the debian-installer was built with the same etch-n-half kernel images that are available in the archive and thus also in the source images. for 4.0r5 this changed - it is now using a kernel (lenny 2.6.26) that is *not* in the archive of etch and thus did not make it automatically in the source images. it could be argued about if source-distribution for the etch-n-half d-i kernel is considered fulfiled by the fact that *for that very moment* the sources for that kernel are present in the lenny archive (i think it's not arguable, but IANAL). in the case it will be considered as source distribution, the etch-n-half images do lack a written offer attached where that particular missing pieces compared to the source images of 4.0r5 can be optained from, and is therefore a GPL violation. in the case it will not be considered as source distribution (which is my point of view on that matter), it's GPL violation anyway. unrelated to which case will be considered, it's also a debian policy violation since debian wants to only distribute self-contained distributions, means binaries and sources together in order to also remove them at the same time, and not having to keep sources arround. apart from the missing kernel sources, i *think* also the sources for the lenny d-i components (which is what is beeing used in the etch-n-half d-i initrd) itself are missing, but havent checked that yet. Re: debimg 0.0.4 released
nul, debian-cd does it wrong too. Unrelated to that: Even if it would, it's fundamenally broken since it does not list which tarball uses which syslinux version (and not all tarballs are using a binary from 3.36+dfsg-1). Following on to your reply[2], you also pointed to the following explicationary paragraph of clause 3: | If distribution of executable or object code is made by offering | access to copy from a designated place, then offering equivalent | access to copy the source code from the same place counts as | distribution of the source code, even though third parties are not | compelled to copy the source along with the object code. This just allows you to split binaries and sources into individual packages or tarballs, it doesn't have to be all in one fat tarball; nothing more. *Iff* you could choose to distribute syslinux binaries build from the Debian source packages of syslinux under GPL3, you would also gain the additional right that you not even don't require to put all sources and binaries into one package/tarball (as GPL2 already grants you, quoted above), but also, as you correctly referenced in your reply[2] to additionally distribute the sources on a different network server than the binaries. Therefore, snapshot.debian.net would qualify as a valid source distribution point, but *only* in this case. However, you cannot distribute the debian sources under GPL3, since everything before version 3.70+dfsg-1 has licensed its debian/* under GPL2 only, not GPL2+. This makes using syslinux under GPL3 impossible if you build the binaries from the debian package, as the build system and the sources itself need to be compatible wrt/ source distribution (or in other words: you cannot apply GPL3 clause 6, paragraph d to the debian/* files of the syslinux source package, and thus not apply it to it as a whole). Unrelated to that: For future usage (any version later than 3.70+dfsg-1), you will be able to choose GPL3. But if you indeed choose to distribute under GPL3, you need to clearly mark it that you do so, both in the debimg tarballs, and you should also first get the acknowledge from the alioth admins regarding reasons already listed in commentary to GPL2 clause 3, paragraph b). SOLUTION To resolv the situation, the best would be, if you: * either remove debimg_0.0.1.tar.gz completely if you're unable to provide sources under clause 3, paragraph a), * or upload the sources to an additional tarball to accompany debimg_0.0.1.tar.gz in case you have the matching sources. Repackaging debimg_0.0.1.tar.gz wouldn't be neat, since first you're changing released tarballs, and second it would be legally cleaner to just deliver source code (lately) for debimg_0.0.1.tar.gz, rather than stopping to distribute debimg_0.0.1.tar.gz without ever had provided sources for it, and at the same time to start distributing a new tarball (debimg_0.0.1+fixed.tar.gz or similar). Bug#497270: debian-cd: includes embedded copies of bootloaders
Raphael Hertzog wrote: > Would it be enough to put the sources of that specific version of syslinux > somewhere on cdimage.debian.org and document that ? for this bug, no. first, debian source packages must contain all sources needed to produce debian binary packages, you cannot out-source parts of the source to a different location. second, debian binary packages and debian source packages must be in sync, which wouldn't be the case if you out-source parts of it. however, for the sarge release (#497471), you could put a source tarball contain the sources for that syslinux version into the same directory as the source-iso images are kept; that way mirrors should pick it up automatically. > Once that this is done, we can reduce the severity of this bug to > wishlist. wishlist ist imho too low, at least normal or rather important would be more approriate, given that debian-cd would, even if it includes the tarball with the syslinux sources in the debian source package of debian-cd itself, still create incomplete source images. which is quite an important mis-feature of a cdimage creation software. you need to fix that for lenny to, in case you decide to keep using emebedded syslinux binaries. completely unrelated to that: if syslinux upstream cannot fix the regressions in time, the last resort solution is to go back to 3.63 for unstable (i'll never embedded any isolinux binaries into syslinux, so I'm depending on that the one in the archive is working). also completely unrelated, but while we are at it, the next upload of syslinux will be splittet into syslinux (arch) and syslinux-common (indep), so that the pure bootloader files can be access/installed on any arch. > I somewhat agree that we should extract what we need from the syslinux > package itself but it's not something that is very practical to implement > and IIRC we had quite some history with syslinux being broken in a few > cases that justified to keep control over what syslinux version we were > using. i personally don't agree with this. a major reason for why we have the current regressions in syslinux comes from exactely that fact that cdimage software like debian-cd do not use the version from the archive, otherwise we would have had reports months ago and would have had time to fix it. now it's almost impossible to bisect between 3.63 and 3.71, calling for testers and confirming this on all the affected different hardware out there (which i don't have access to myself). however, your call. -- Address:Daniel Baumann, Burgunderstrasse 3, CH-4562 Biberist Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Internet: http://people.panthera-systems.net/~daniel-baumann/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#497270: debian-cd: includes embedded copies of bootloaders
Package: debian-cd Severity: serious Hi, debian-cd includes (at least) syslinux binaries without source. debian-cd should take the syslinux binaries out of the archive when building images.
