Is debian-private running, or have I just been removed from it?

I sent a message to it a couple days ago regarding the "WebPages"
directory now in the distribution, but never saw it, nor any other
messages to debian-private, appear.

Could you send me your input file(s)?
Last time (yesterday) when I used \usepackage{times} in my latex2e
files, itworked OK, but you probably mean something different
with the postscript fonts.

Anyway, the current *TeX* maintainer, Nils Rennebarth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
has changed email-address, and seems not too responsive to mail
I sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (altough it _is_ the same nils).
So, maybe I'll try to fix this, if I manage.

Could you also tell me where to find teTeX? (if CTAN, then never
mind, I'll find it).

BTW, if anyone else is working on the *TeX* packages, please tell me.

But where do you want it to be? In texbin, or in gs?
If it's part of teTeX (whatever that is), then it _sounds_ to me
as though it belongs somewhat more to tex than to gs.

On the other hand, what makes you think it should go into eighter?
it doesnt' come with gs, it doesn't come with TeX, so maybe you
should create a tetex package?

Dunno. I can use the "times" package. The Times package, as far
as I know _should_ work without extra binaries -- or am I wrong?

Bug#3446: expect 5.19.0-1 still depends on tcl74

1996-06-29 Thread Amos Shapira
Package: expect
Version: 5.19.0-1

While installing expect (from the buzz/binary-i386/devel dir at caldera),
*and* with tcl75 7.5-1 allready installed, expect failed to install since
it insisted on tcl74. I installed tcl74 and left the links pointing to
75, so I suppose expect can run with 75 (right?).

Also, dpkg reports old expect .deb file format, maybe that's relevant?

Thanks.

Did you use xdvi, though? latex->dvips works, I think, it's the
latex->xdvi that screws up (xdvi uses ugly fonts at the wrong size
instead, because MakeTeXPK fails to create them.)

Re: Debiandoc - WWW access to online docs

1996-06-29 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I put out a new version of debiandoc, download the file debiandoc_0.1-0.deb
from http://www.clinet.fi/~liw/ (enter the directory as the URL, then
in lynx press d on the file, or shift-right-mouse-button in Netscape, or
something similar in other browsers).

This version is not a security bug. Unless there's something important
I don't know about URLs, cgi-bins, or shell scripting. Take a look.

Changes from version 0.0-0 to 0.1-0:

Fixed security bug.
No longer uses rman (since it is in non-free), but uses a simple
built-in man2html conversion. Not really smart enough,
but good enough for a prototype.
Due to previous, references to manual pages inside manual pages
work.
Added a couple of manual pages.

The manual pages work relatively well. Plain text works. Info files
don't work (they'll be converted to ugly plain text). HTML should work
(if filename is *.html or *.html.gz).

I won't hack or read much mail for a few days, but then I'll start
hacking on the conversions and the caching. I vaguely remember hearing
about info2html and texi2html converters; if you have URLs, don't hesitate
to tell me. I'll also start re-reading the developer's guidelines so
that I'll know how to do proper uploads (I have the account).

If anyone tests this, please tell me what you think. If I don't
get any feedback, I won't improve it.

Someone might also want to take a look at implementing the queries (full
text search of all documents, and everything related to one program). I
don't know if and when I will have time for those.

Expect 5.19 is for Tcl 7.4 so the current expect package depends on
the tcl74 package. Expect 5.20 is for Tcl 7.5 but it is still in
development.

You could put

   | condredirect you-foo-request grep -s whatever
   you-foo-outgoing

into ~you/.qmail-foo and then use qlist for ~you/.qmail-foo-outgoing.
Or maybe a more positive approach:

   | condredirect you-foo-outgoing grep -s '^Distribute-This-Message-To: foo'
   you-foo-request

Or hook in a fancier mailing list program.

Nils/TeX maintainer, where are you?

1996-06-29 Thread joost witteveen

Nils Rennebarth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is currently listed as
our TeX maintainer. The email address doesn't work, and
email sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] gets forwarded to the same
address, so that doens't help eighter.

Some of the TeX packages have bugs reported against them,
and I feel the urge to try and correct them.
Before I do so, however, I would like to know whether
  - Nils is still alive (i.e. connected)
  - There are other people who intended to take over (some) TeX
packages.

Personally, I think I _can_ correct some things in the TeX packages,
and I use TeX quite often, but TeX (and the fonts, and everything)
so often remind me of the fact that I really don't know very much
about it, that I feel somewhat uneasy with the thought of becomming
the TeX maintainer.

On the other hand, I do think it's better to have a maintainer
than no maintainer at all, so if there are no other people willing
to take it over, I'll be glad to dive into the TeX packages.

And why is this a bug? Seems fine to me. OK, it should probably remove /var/web

Departure -- hopefully temporary

1996-06-29 Thread Bill Mitchell

I'm afraid that I must drop off the debian project for now.
I'm still on track to drop off the net around mid July, due
to relocation to the Philippines, and I need to spend a larger
portion of my time getting ready for the move. I'm not sure
where in the Philippines I'll end up, or whether a net connection
will be workable from wherever that may be. Hopefully, I'll
be rejoining the project in a couple of months. I'm unsubscribing
from the lists as of today, but I'll still be reachable by email
for the next couple of weeks.

I've been involved in the debian project since day one, and it's
been a good experience. We've produced a top-notch distribution,
but it's still got some rough edges. I think some of those rough
edges would have been smoother if we'd made a few design decisions
differently. In those areas where the rough edges really matter,
the design decisions which they grow out of will get re-thought to
smooth out the roughness. That's already happened in a couple of
areas.

Most of my packages have found homes. I have three packages left,
one of which is an important one. I'm afraid that they're now
orphans. The following is disposition information on my former
packages:
