GTK+ is unofficially at 1.0 now. I'm building a prerelease of 1.0

Relying on GTK+ for lots of apps for Debian 2.1 would be fine by me,
as the rapid development phase is over, and GTK+ 1.1 has already been
forked, following the Linux kernel/Perl/GNUS developmental model.

I did too, though I'd make the change that any arguments given after
the D get passed to diff instead of -u... though -u is what I usually
want, it lets people use "D -c" if they want (it's a semi-religious
issue, some people, most notably RMS, dislike -u format...)

Of course, what I'd *really* get a kick out of would be having
conffiles shipped with RCS ",v" files and have the option of an
rcsmerge at mismatch time... not as much as eliminating the need for
conffiles (install-* are a good step in that direction), but it bears
thinking about...

intent to package jstation

1998-04-14 Thread Bdale Garbee
I intend to package 'jstation' for Debian. This is a suite of Java-based
software that implements a full-featured ground station for amateur radio
satellites using the Pacsat protocols.

Because jstation depends on JDK 1.1, it will go to contrib despite being
GPL'ed itself. This might change if a free Java implementation for Debian
can replace the JDK dependency. This is my first foray into the Java
universe, so I'm a little out of touch on the details of what's available.

For more info on jstation, see: http://www.qsl.net/n6lyt/

Wow, I'm a dope, I didn't even read through the script.

Well, *can* we do this? :) Red Hat has IP masquerading in their kernel
by default, and I know that a MAJOR reason lots of people use
Linux in their homes is as a dial-in/masquerading server.

I think we can safely make this a goal for 2.1 if we haven't already.

Dependencies on libg++-dev

1998-04-14 Thread jdassen
Hi Fabrizio, Ulf,

Currently, the libdb2++ and libsidplay1-dev packages are the only ones that
depend on the virtual libg++-dev package.

In the past, upstream libg++ (e.g. libg++27) contained both the C++ standard
library and the GNU specific C++ classes. Currently, upstream libg++
contains only the GNU specific classes; it is no longer being maintained.
Upstream libstdc++ (for which we have the virtual "libstdc++-dev" package)
consists only of the C++ standard library (including STL).

Thus, the meaning of that virtual package "libg++-dev" is currently unclear.
I suspect that in both of your cases, "libstdc++-dev" would do to. Please
change your packages to use that, so that I can remove the "Provides:
libg++" from libstdc++2.8-dev.

Greetings,
Ray

You meant when using "dselect"? Perhaps you should file a bug report

dpkg-perl should depend on perl-base, as there's no perl but perl-base
in the base system and dpkg-perl works with perl-base.
I have filed a bug against perl-base, and I've seen it has another
long-standing packaging bug, so I guess its maintainer (Klee Dienes) is
really busy these days. Does anyone has the time to do a non-maintainer
upload?

There was an error in previous boot-floppies set. The choosen keymap
wasn't copied to default.keymap at installation time. That bug has been
fixed in 2.0.4.

In fact that was the default for a few libreadline*.deb versions, because
we wanted Debian to be latin1-compatible "out of the box", but Guy Maor
(readline maintainer) changed it back because leaving it "on" broke "META-x"
handling, and there were a few bug reports about that. (Guy also removed some
definitions that made the Home, End and Delete keys work). I guess it's time
(again) to discuss which should be the defaults. Perhaps asking the user at
installation/upgrade time.

May be. Is it OK to modify /etc/profile at install time? (/etc/profile is
a conffile of libreadline). I can hear the sound of the mythical can of

Right. There seems to be an obscure bug in dpkg (?) which causes
directories to not be noticed as directories but as files, creating

Hi.

Well, script is sure nice, but when I installed the whole distribution from
scratch yesterday, it was some pain: I requested ipmasq package to be
installed (among other 800 or so things :) and when it asked me how to
configure itself, I had no idea how to answer the questions it asked - like
the IP of external interface- how do I know, it is a ppp dialup! So, I left
the answers blank. As a result, after reboot my system had ALL the networking
forbidden. Purging the package helped, but I had to spend quite a few minutes
figuring out what's going on.

Imlib packages buggy

1998-04-14 Thread Andreas Tille
Hello,

Imlib 1.1 has some bugs when loading files in TIFF, PNG, XPM format.
They are fixed in the latest CVS snapshot. Because it conflicts
with the policy this snapshot can't be included in the frozen tree.
But the current release in Debian is known to be buggy (sorry, I'm
not able to send a official bug-report because I'm to busy in this moment
to install the old buggy version. (I use the snapshot from CVS.)
But I want to warn the maintainer before to release hamm as stable
that there are certain problems!

Re: boot-floppies_2.0.4 (source i386) uploaded)

1998-04-14 Thread Greg Schafer
Hello,

These latest boot floppies are excellent but there are a couple
of annoyances still outstanding:

1) After setting up the network and acknowledging the warning message
about using PPP as the default connection type, a flurry of error messages
are sprayed (almost randomly) over the bottom half of the screen. Not good
for a new user who may not have a NIC but opts to setup the network
parameters anyway (for his dialup PPP, like me!).

2) A Master Boot Record is installed when you ask it not to. Not good when
you have a boot manager that lives in the MBR (the dialog actually
mentions to select "no" if you have a bootmanager).

Apart from these bugs, the boot-floppies are becoming real nice.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks

Hi.

The thing is that I had a prefectly working IPmasq setup, with rules
changed in ip-up and ip-down. I just wanted to give a try of ipmasq _package_.
And configuration script does _not_ take into account the possibility of
external interface with dynamic IP. OK, if this package is not for people with
dial-up then description should mention that and at least postinst should
finally ask whether to activate the rules based on the entered IPs.

I fully agree here. I set up a box recently which was to function as an
internet gateway, and installed the ipmasq package (as IP masquerading
would be needed, and this package sounded like the right thing).

However, ipmasq simply does _not_ work when using (a) dialup access and
(b) dynamic IP addresses. This was not clear when installing the
package. In fact, it took me quite some digging to find out that bogus
rules created by ipmasq were responsible. I ended up ripping it out and
manually putting stuff in /etc/ppp/ip-{up,down}.d/. I'd have expected
the ipmasq package to do it similarly, but it simply defines some rules
in rc2.d.

In that case, I'd think this bug should be re-assigned to 'ftp.debian.org'
and marked as 'important'. This bug is really not a bug in any tetex-*
package, but a 'bug' in the ftp archive. When will a dependancy check be
built into the program that moves .deb files from Incoming into the
archive?

You can get around this by putting tetex-bin on hold. Then dselect will
not want to upgrade it and will do its dependency check with the currently
installed version instead of the 'newer, available' version.

*** The Upcoming Release of Hamm ***

1998-04-14 Thread Brian White
There seems to be a lot of speculation about the upcoming release of Hamm.
The date "April 20th" seems to be the favorite date that is getting passed
around.

I can guarantee everyone right now that no release will be made at that
time. Because of the delays in freezing hamm and sheer lack of manpower,
the testing group cannot be ready for at least 3 more weeks, probably more.

Considering the huge number of critical, grave, and important bugs that
are still open, though, I don't think the testing group is going to be
the limiting factor.

So, when will Hamm be released? You decide. It's up to the devolpers
to set the date by fixing the problems that are currently holding up
the release. As soon as the last release-necessary bug gets closed or
downgraded, we'll probably be ready to ship.

If you want to join the testing group, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Brandon
Mitchell) and ask if you can help out.

If you want to close out some of these bugs, find a package that interests
you and contact the maintainer offering to help.

I'm feeling sick and am very busy, so I'm going to be blunt here... Lively
discussions about whether this is good or bad and the things that can be done
about it are largely pointless. More discussion is not going to get it out
the door sooner. The only thing that is _really_ going to help is to roll
up your seleves and get down & dirty. We need backbones -- not jawbones
or wishbones.

(My appologies to all the backbones out there who are already getting under
the load and doing the work. You know who you are.)

jdk 1.0.2

1998-04-14 Thread aqy6633
Hi.

Could we move jdk1.0.2 packages from non-free to hamm/non-free?
For those who has to write *applets* having jdk1.0.2 (with all the bugs)
is a must. Most of the currently installed browsers do not support
jdk1.1. Yes, it is possible to write a 1.0.2 code and compile it with
jdk1.1 javac, but it is much more convenient to have 1.0.2 to avoid
using 1.1 features by mistake.

Thanks.

Well, I only encountered this once (yes, this was using dselect), and as I
may not be able to reproduce this, it could be useless to file a bug. I may

Klee is really *busy*. He didn't respond to some mail about koules (another,
but very unimportant) package. I did a nmr of koules, and still didn't hear
anything.

Do you have filed a bug against dpkg-perl, too? (As you say you filed one

This setting does not need to change (well, we need a real keyboard setup
sometime, but this can wait). As I wrote below, the real problem was LC_ALL,
not convert-meta (as I found out later).

I did hear something about /etc/envronment, but I'm not sure what purpose it
has and if it works for all shells, etc. Well, I hope it is okay to change
/etc/profile, as it is *very* annoying for non-english users (esp. first
time user) to have to guess keys (and not knowing how to fix this).

Heh...

In my opinion, /etc/environment should be supported by init (with a
few sanity checks to avoid wedging the system), login, su, cron, ...
That said, the only applications I'm aware of that explicitly support
/etc/environment are sshd and xdm.

No it won't AFAIK. I've orphaned it more than 1 year ago and no-one

current 0.7.1-2 package is old and buggy) and since I don't use java

The normal alternatives mechanism (with symlinks) won't work very well
here. You can't be sure that all ftp daemons use the same command line
arguments. A possible solution could look like this:

1. every ftpd package adds its own line to /etc/inetd.conf. These lines are
commented out (maybe with a special comment-chars value) by default.
2. every ftpd package registers itself to special file in /var/lib/dpkg
(optionally with a priority similar to the normal alternatives mechanism).
3. if a new ftpd package is installed it asks the user if he wants to use
it as the default ftpd (if the daemon has already been registered as
mentioned above there should be no such question).
4. update-inetd (or to be more precise DebianNet.pm) will then read this new
ftpd-alternatives file on startup and will only enable the line which has
been selected as default (or the one with the highest priority).

Thanks,

Peter

Free-World maintainer for xpdf ?

1998-04-14 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

Would anyone want to take xpdf from me and make a free-world release? And
maybe even take over the package?

As a Canadian resident, I don't think I can deal with the encryption code (as
I understand it, the US laws for encryption technology make no difference
between US and Canadian residents).

It would probably make sense to spawn two versions off the xpdf sources: xpdf
and xpdf-i. And it is probably easier if one persons maintains both
packages.

xpdf is a nice little package. The Debian package is Bug-Free (TM),
Lintian-Clean (TM) and Debhelper-Converted (TM). It is easy to maintain.
Unfortunately, it is in non-free, and Derek dislikes the GPL. If someone
would be willing to work on xpdf despite the non-DFSG'ness, I be most happy
to help.

Thanks, Dirk

Leo Smiers has written decryption code for xpdf -- you can now view
encrypted PDF files with xpdf!

Note that cryptography code is subject to ridiculous export
restrictions in the USA, so you probably won't want to make these
patches or any decryption-enabled binaries available for web/ftp
access from the US. I encourage anyone in countries with more
reasonable laws to make binaries available.

Everything is available from my xpdf web site:
