Description:
tiger - Report system security vulnerabilities
Closes: 123891 126635 134085 138855 139221 139667 139669
Changes:
 tiger (2.2.4-22) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * This is the Yes, I was on vacation fixing bugs release (I)
   * Applied patch Marcel that fixes some long-standing issues, did not change
BASEDIR to basedir since it should work that way but *did* change typo
which made diff's against previous run not to work (Closes: #139221)
   * Fixed Linux/2/gen_export_sets tpo (Closes: #139667)
   * Modified Linux/2/config so that findcmd() looks first for binaries
generated
by Tiger, including realpath (Closes: #139669)
   * Modified deb_checkmd5sum to understand locale.nopurge configuration.
Currently experimental, but seems to work fine. Admins that fixed this
through templates will, however, have to remake them (Closes: #123891)
   * Since realpath's Linux does not work as tiger's realpath -d, removed it
from the Recommends: (use tiger's instead)
   * Added -u option in gen_listeningprocs (UDP sockets are not shown if using
netstat, this was an unreported bug)
   * Added warning to the tigerrc regarding user's Tiger_ListeningProc (will
not work if using NETSTAT and not LSOF)
   * Added the Tiger_Check_EVERYLISTENING option which will report if a
service is listening on *all* interfaces, default is Y, if set to 'N'
only processes run by users different from Tiger_ListeningProcs will be
reported. Changed gen_listeningprocs for this to work (Closes: #138855)
   * Changed the name of gen_listeningprocs to check_listeningprocs (more
 proper and consistent)
   * Provided some more documentation in the tiger.8 manpage detailing which
 modules are available
   * Check_listeningprocs has been modified to allow it to not warn on
processes when using the Tiger_Listening_ValidProc variable in
/etc/tigerrc this allows admins to remove processes which can dynamically
 change TCP/IP port (Closes: #134085)
   * Changed Tiger_Listening_Proc to Tiger_Listening_ValidUser (more precise).
WARNING: Postinst will not change this from the config file!
   * The changes introduced in check_listeningprocs as well as the
check-against-template behavior configuration will (hopefully) reduce
greatly
false positives if properly configured (Closes: #126635)
   * Set Tiger_Check_CRACK to 'N' by default and removed cron job since this
feature does not work. Added 'john' Recommends: since the Debian package
does provide that feature by itself.

   * Refined description - closes: #140607
   * Refined copyright - closes: #140636
   * BTW, the distribution of AbiWord by Debian is already acknowledged
by the upstream, so this is the official or at least semi-official
product of AbiWord for Debian. I think we can call it AbiWord anyway.
 Man, who cares ;-)
   * Added Brazilian Portuguese templates - closes: #140410
   * Fixed in the upstream - closes: #134054, #139646

But I think you are using dh_installmanpages.
Using dh_installman might be what you expect.

dh_installmanpages does have an exclude option,
just specify the manpage name.

This question is better asked in -mentors, I guess.

Problem with FAQ is it is old. (Potato release days contents)

Policy to prefixed scripts is nice. FAQ needs to be updated if so.

glibc packages total installed size is only a few dozen megs. However,
the source builds takes up about 600megs. XFree86, about 1.6gigs.

glibc's build requirements sound like about 20-30 times installed size,
then. Assuming this holds, and trusting the 8GB figure, gives
160--240GB.

That's all of three 100GB IDE disks running in RAID 0. Four disks if for
some reason you want redundancy on your cache.

Surely no more than $1000, even if you buy from expensive vendors. At
least if it fits in the machine's case. You could do it for $500. Is it
worth it? Not sure. Maybe on real slow archs, like 68K.

Now, not sure if ccache can handle that. Packages.debian.org had never
heard of ccache :-(

The only real issue with the answer in the FAQ is that there is a
(slight) chance of a name collision down the road. Granted, if your
init.d scripts are colliding, there are also probably binaries with
similar names, but

The local-foo policy would avoid this issue. That and set /usr/local
ahead of /usr and /bin on your search path ;-).

Peace.

Any CAML people want to take over efuns?

Brent Fulgham put efuns up for adoption over a year ago. It's got 3
release critical bugs open against it. I considered adopting it, but
as I don't know CAML and don't like emacs, it would be a bad choice.
Please, could someone who knows CAML adopt this package and look it over?

Otherwise, let's purge it from the archive. It doesn't even build any
more on x86:

/usr/bin/ocamlc -I ../ocamlsrc/version/include -c options.ml

Surely no more than $1000, even if you buy from expensive vendors. At
least if it fits in the machine's case. You could do it for $500. Is it
worth it? Not sure. Maybe on real slow archs, like 68K.

So we firstly need to find a real slow arch which also supports 4 new large
IDE disks (remember that machines 3 years old tend not to have good support
for 32G drives).

Then this same arch needs to be slow enough at CPU that it needs a compiler
cache, while being fast enough at doing disk IO and running the file system
to be able to offer a performance gain.

Then of course there's the issue of how many M68K machines you could buy for
$1K. Maybe it would be better and easier to just buy a number of machines
and divide the load?

Perhaps architectures which are slow enough to really benefit would still
benefit if they had to go out over the network to a cache? Certainly if
there was other storage on the same LAN, maybe even farther.

ITP: libfaketime -- Source for replacement of time funcion

Description : Source for replacement of time funcion

From the code:
This is source for replacement of time funcion, which enables you
to travel in time. It is usable for testing or it should help
if you have any program which expires in any time period and uses
shared libraries. I wrote this, because I want to get my old
expired netscape to work for me.
  Usage:
set library libfaketime.so to load before any other :
  export LD_PRELOAD=`pwd`/libfaketime.so
then set env variable FAKE_TIME_DIFF to amount of seconds to
travel in time (positive goes in past , nogative to future)
  export FAKE_TIME_DIFF=-100
than you should see with date command where are you in time :-)

I need to contact upstream about licensing, and versioning issues.
Expect an upload in a couple of weeks - I am now marked as being on
vacation (going to GUADEC III tomorrow).

Apparently.

One machine that I recently gave away never really supported more than 25G of
my hard drives. I never really investigated it properly, 25G was enough.

Then this same arch needs to be slow enough at CPU that it needs a
compiler cache, while being fast enough at doing disk IO and running the
file system to be able to offer a performance gain.

DMA-based IDE is pretty fast. Nowhere near a good as SCSI, but you can't
 beat the price.

That's an arguement for another list.

Re: Bug#140183: aspell does install or depend on any languages

2002-04-02 Thread Nicolas Boullis
Hi!

When I read both your mail, I have the feeling that aspell should be
split in 2 packages: aspell (which provides the spell-checking
functionality, and depends on any dictionary) and aspell-dev (which
provides the word-list generation functionality).

And if you can't split both functionality, you may still have everything
in aspell-dev and aspell depends on aspell-dev.

Hence, packages would depend on aspell-dev instead of aspell, and no
dictionary will be required. And users will still use aspell, which
depends on a dictionnary, which seems more policy-compiant since most
users consider aspell as a spell-checker...

What about this suggestion?

Regards,

Nicolas

The ideal one is rebuilding every package.

A compromised version would be something like:
create libsmpeg0-3 package containing potato-compatible libsmpeg.
Make woody libsmpeg0 Depend on libsmpeg0-3.

(yeah, it's unclean, but something workable, I should think)
