You could add a special keyword into the summaries, and have its

Are you using procmail? Set a rule that if the mail is sent by you, with a
header stating that themail was originated locally, do not use spamassassin.

Are you using postfix? Set postfix so that mail delivered locally uses a entry
like:
127.0.0.1:smtp ...
external_ip:smtp ...
  -o content_filter=filter:

filterunix - n n - - pipe
  flags=Rq user=pffilter argv=/home/pffilter/filter.sh -f ${sender} --
${recipient}

Create a user pffilter and put in filter.sh:

/bin/cat | /usr/bin/spamc -f | /usr/sbin/sendmail -i $@

Set your spamassassin to run spamd, which is always a good idea.

That will separate incoming mail and outgoing (local) mail to be checked by
SA.

Dunno, if it isn't available then it sounds like a good thing for a feature

No, I manually executed it.

Cor set up on the servers with simple HOWTOs for mirrors.

or you mean apt can do it, but not all the servers run an rsync
 daemon?

No, and no.

On machine a) I copiled /var/cache/apt/archives
I then repackaged every archive on machine a)
(dpkg-split -s, rgzip, dpkg-split -j)
For Packages.gz, gunzip Packages.gz, rgzip Packages
One week later I ran apt-get update, apt-get upgrade on machine b)
I then repackaged all the archives on machine b)
I also renamed them so the names were the same as on machine a)
Next I did rproxy (rsync via http) from b) to a)

I timed this with both the repackaged and non repackaged versions. The
repackaged version used much less network traffic (though not as much less as
I would have liked).

So you see, it was a proof of concept, not a reimplementation that users can
use.

In order to make it usable:

get the rgzip package into debian. This patch is 100% stable (read it, it is
short). The only problem with it is it can only be used in 99% of
situations, so to avoid unexpected bugs it probably should be off by default
(e.g. it cannot be used in creating the dictionaries used by dict). It can
always be used in creating .deb files. When I proposed this to the gzip
maintainer (Bdale Garbee IIRC) the only response I got is that it might go in
upstream. Well, Jean Loup is rather busy, and hasn't put it in upstream in
the last year, so I think we shouldn't wait.

Modify dpkg to use rgzip (currently dpkg uses zlib if it is installed and
calls gzip if it isn't) so by deleting the use of zlib this is trivial.

Write a program that precomputes the rolling checksums used by rproxy, and tie
it into debuild. These checksums can then be uploaded with dupload. This
seems technically feasable to me, and the whole system works without this
file as well.

Modify rproxy to use the precomputed checksums if present rather than
generating them.

Modify rproxy to cope with our version numbering so it knows two files are
different versions if their version number differs. I expect this is quite
easy.

Do some stress/security checks on rproxy, mirrors won't appreciate us giving
them security holes. I don't know the code, so I don't know how hard this
will be.

Modify the standard mirror script to also copy the rolling checksum files.

Convince some mirrors to install rproxy.

 What about http://home.tiscali.cz:8080/~cz210552/aptrsync.html
 is it now obsolete?

That looks like it does what you were looking for above (update via rsync,
upgrade via http).

I don't think that's a reason to delay fixing kdelibs' RC bugs. The
build can always be delayed on mips/mipsel until the gcc problems are
fixed, and fixing the bugs gives useful information to other developers

No, this list contains all stalled packages, including the ones that depend
on packages that are too young to go into testing. They are uninteresting
from my perspective, because the work they needed has already been done.

I'm not claiming that solving these problems will solve all problems, but the

Other problems will surface once these are solved, and this is indeed why
these things are the most urgent ones. Before they are solved the other

The key to better performance in producing new Debian versions is not

Your reasoning has a lot of merit, but doesn't contradict mine.

Let's for a moment assume that all the gcc-3.3 errors in KDE were solved.
KDE would still be held up by the RC bug in openldap2, along with some 30 odd
other packages.

If on the other hand, the openldap2 bug was solved, the gcc-3.3 errors would
surface as the remaining problem for KDE. I think that the KDE maintainers
would feel more strongly motivated to put efforts into solving these
problems, once they know that the transition into Testing is in their own
hands. Otherwise, they would probably spend their time on working on other
packages, debating how to handle spam or anything that would feel more
rewarding at the time.

migrate thereby to a new API.

I dont know which is more important, stable testing dependencies or dynamic
evolution of the package pool. Personally I think the later is, what testing
is for.

But: it would be good to detect such a mismatch on build time, for
backporting purpose. One good thing would be a static detection of lib
incompatibilities in the rules file.

How about dh_shlibdeps, is it detecting this (and failing?). Hmm.. actually
I think this was not the problem in the current example.

strange build-deps

2003-06-17 Thread Micha Drozd
Hi,

Latest I've tried to apt-build xserver-xfree and i got error because
apt-build couldn't find any candidates to install openbsd.
(apt-get build-dep has similar problems)
In .dsc file there is :

Build-Depends: ..., , ..
..., kernel-headers-2.4 | hurd | freebsd | netbsd | openbsd

but i have installed kernel headers .

Where is the problem ?
Similar situation was when i was trying to build libgtk2.0-0 (there was
libpng12-0-dev needed which is provided by libpng12-dev).

This sounds like apt-(get|build) have problems with recognizing
build-deps which are meta-packages ...

Any idea ?

best regards,

Call for Qt GUI developer

2003-06-17 Thread Erik Winn
Hello,

A couple of weeks ago I posted with some considerable pleasure an
announcement asking for developers for a multi-media project based in
Portland, Oregon.

See:
 http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200305/msg02155.html

I received a few responses of interest and have filled one role but am now in
a position to fill the other (Qt GUI development) and must admit, to my
embarrassment, that the drive with the contact info has died and was not
backed up ...

If you responded at that time and are still interested and available, please
reply to me or you may call me directly at the Redcellx offices:

Thanks very much for your time.

no freshness dating inside Packages.gz

2003-06-17 Thread Dan Jacobson
There are tons of information categories in the apt Packages file.
But one they forgot when making the spec was some kind of date
information. For unless a maintainer somehow smuggles it in, say in
the version number,
$ apt-cache policy icom
  Installed: 19990819-3
  Candidate: 20020923-2
otherwise we offline users have no idea if were looking at something
that hasn't changed since the 90's, or was just updated last week,
without having to connect our modems to find out.

Sure, you don't need to know the date, as you are using sid and did
apt-get update, you are assured it's the latest version. Well, one
doesn't need the maintainer field either etc.

Yes. It is installed on your system so apt shows it.

Is isn't in the Debian archive anymore for unstable..

$ madison libsensors1
libsensors1 |2.6.3-5 |stable | i386
libsensors1 |2.6.5-4 | testing | i386

I just want to thank the security team for doing such a stellar job

And I can attest that when I followed their procedures, they got an

I've wanted the same from time to time. It's a funny omission from the

And yes, that can be useful information. If you're looking for anything

Description:
apt-spy- writes a sources.list file based on bandwidth tests
Closes: 194582 196330
Changes:
 apt-spy (3.0-3) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Applied patch from Steven Holmes to fix writing of sources.list
(Closes: #196330) -- NB: This patch hasn't had half the testing I would
have liked...please test it to extinction :)
   * Modified manpage to use -d distribution rather than -d dist for the
benefit of the hard of understanding :) (actually I CAN see how
confusion could arise, especially since English may not be your
preferred language, or if you were trying to very quickly read the
manpage and just read the synopsis) (Closes: #194582)
   * Modified debian/rules so a clean (and current) mirror list is downloaded
 every build.

Changed-By: Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
unclutter - hides the cursor in X after a period of inactivity
Closes: 149720 197684 197714
Changes:
 unclutter (8-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Taking this package over again.
   * Update to current policy. Closes: #197714
   * Changed version number to 8, since the original tarball is named
 unclutter-8.tar.Z.
   * Downloaded original tarball, and included it as pristine upstream source,
except I had to uncompress it (.Z) and gzip it back up. Still, more
 pristine than before.
   * Include patchlevel.h as the upstream changelog, such as it is.
   * Expanded copyright file with download location and actual non-copyright
 statement.
   * Rewrote and simplified the package description.
   * Update to debhelper v4.
   * Moved out of the X directories since the Imakefile is not actually used.
   * Patched it to not spin when a full-screen program (such as a SDL game
or xlock) is running and the XGrabPointer fails. Closes: #197684
   * Applied patch from Stelios Bounanos that adds a -notclass switch, useful
for apps like galeon that frequently change the window title.
 Closes: #149720
   * Also a patch to add regex support in the -not matching.

Accepted ispell 3.1.20.0-2 (i386 source)

2003-06-17 Thread David Coe
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Format: 1.7
Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 19:46:59 -0400
Source: ispell
Binary: ibritish iamerican ispell
Architecture: source i386
Version: 3.1.20.0-2
Distribution: unstable
Urgency: low
Maintainer: David Coe [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: David Coe [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
iamerican - An American English dictionary for ispell
ibritish - A British English dictionary for ispell
ispell - International Ispell (an interactive spelling corrector)
Closes: 69068 102607 123641 134128 151234 164239 164248 165142 168412 192400
Changes:
 ispell (3.1.20.0-2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Standards version update to 3.5.10:
 - compile with -g regardless of DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS 'debug'
 - add support for DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS 'noopt'
   * We no longer build the wbritish package here; that's
now done (much better) by the scowl source package.
   * The dictionaries depend: on dictionaries-common, no longer need to
 pre-depend.
   * Removed most of our patches from config.X and put them in local.h
 where they belong.
   * Correct a syntax error in parse.y and adjust Build-Depends; thanks
 to Daniel Schepler [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Closes: #168412: ispell: Build-Depends still not right
   * The ibritish and iamerican dictionaries now include the words from
the SCOWL-derived wbritish and wamerican packages.
 Closes: #69068: ibritish: Isn't 'energise' a word?
Closes: #134128: iamerican: doesn't know how to spell nefarious
Closes: #151234: ibritish is missing towards, forwards, etc
Closes: #165142: iamerican: please add animus, conflate, opine, politicize
Note: conflate is only int the large ispell dictionaries and in the large
wamerican/wbritish word lists -- I presume it's there for good reason
(infrequently
used?). If you feel strongly it belongs in the regular dictionaries, please
reopen this bug report and I'll consult with upstream and consider moving it.
I also have meant for a while to package the large ispell dictionaries
(I have already packaged the large English wordlists) -- I *will* get
to that one of these years.
   * Provide a better example for use of the -d parameter
Closes: #192400: ispell: Manpage not up to date
   * Accept NMUs from the dictionaries-common transition; thanks again, Agustin.
Closes: #102607: hash files should be 128 character pers string
Closes: #123641: ispell: ispell does not use debconf
Closes: #164239: Please update your iamerican package to IDWP new policy
Closes: #164248: Please update your ibritish package to IDWP new policy
   * Removed all the control file and rules file weridness created to get us
through the dictionaries-common transition; life is so much simpler now.
   * Debhelper compat 4 allowed me to simplify some more weird stuff
in rules, particularly regarding the man pages (thanks, Joey).
