rsync in apt sources.list?
Re: Package Lists and Size, linux.debian.devel Cor Some of the servers run rsync, which works well for the Packages Cor file, but does not work for the packages themselves. OK, will putting rsync in one's sources.list as you say below just affect the Packages file fetching, or also the fetching of the packages themselves? How can I switch on only the former? Cor Other mirrors do not run rsync since it puts extra CPU load on Cor their server. Perhaps you could find/use a mirror with public Cor rsync access. To do this, just replace http with rsync in your Cor sources.list I don't see this documented. If I upgrade (apt: Installed: 0.5.4 Candidate: 0.5.5.1, Need to get 12.4MB) do I get this new feature? Is there a link to just the changelog so I can see if they added this before I spend the modem time downloading? http://packages.debian.org doesn't seem to have links to changelogs, not are they in separate files on the mirrors. Cor There are technical solutions to precomputing the diffs used by Cor rsync, as well as solutions for diffing .gz files. E.g. I was Cor able to perform apt-get update, upgrade in about half the time, Cor but nobody has put in the work required to get these nicely Cor integrated into the current tool set, is it in apt now? Cor set up on the servers with simple HOWTOs for mirrors. or you mean apt can do it, but not all the servers run an rsync daemon? Dunno, if it isn't available then it sounds like a good thing for a feature request. Though at modem speeds, 12MB only takes one hour. No, I manually executed it. Cor set up on the servers with simple HOWTOs for mirrors. or you mean apt can do it, but not all the servers run an rsync daemon? No, and no. On machine a) I copiled /var/cache/apt/archives I then repackaged every archive on machine a) (dpkg-split -s, rgzip, dpkg-split -j) For Packages.gz, gunzip Packages.gz, rgzip Packages One week later I ran apt-get update, apt-get upgrade on machine b) I then repackaged all the archives on machine b) I also renamed them so the names were the same as on machine a) Next I did rproxy (rsync via http) from b) to a) I timed this with both the repackaged and non repackaged versions. The repackaged version used much less network traffic (though not as much less as I would have liked). So you see, it was a proof of concept, not a reimplementation that users can use. In order to make it usable: get the rgzip package into debian. This patch is 100% stable (read it, it is short). The only problem with it is it can only be used in 99% of situations, so to avoid unexpected bugs it probably should be off by default (e.g. it cannot be used in creating the dictionaries used by dict). It can always be used in creating .deb files. When I proposed this to the gzip maintainer (Bdale Garbee IIRC) the only response I got is that it might go in upstream. Well, Jean Loup is rather busy, and hasn't put it in upstream in the last year, so I think we shouldn't wait. Modify dpkg to use rgzip (currently dpkg uses zlib if it is installed and calls gzip if it isn't) so by deleting the use of zlib this is trivial. Write a program that precomputes the rolling checksums used by rproxy, and tie it into debuild. These checksums can then be uploaded with dupload. This seems technically feasable to me, and the whole system works without this file as well. Modify rproxy to use the precomputed checksums if present rather than generating them. Modify rproxy to cope with our version numbering so it knows two files are different versions if their version number differs. I expect this is quite easy. Do some stress/security checks on rproxy, mirrors won't appreciate us giving them security holes. I don't know the code, so I don't know how hard this will be. Modify the standard mirror script to also copy the rolling checksum files. Convince some mirrors to install rproxy. What about http://home.tiscali.cz:8080/~cz210552/aptrsync.html is it now obsolete? That looks like it does what you were looking for above (update via rsync, upgrade via http). KDE would still be held up by the RC bug in openldap2, along with some 30 odd other packages. If on the other hand, the openldap2 bug was solved, the gcc-3.3 errors would surface as the remaining problem for KDE. I think that the KDE maintainers would feel more strongly motivated to put efforts into solving these problems, once they know that the transition into Testing is in their own hands. Call for Qt GUI developer
Hello, A couple of weeks ago I posted with some considerable pleasure an announcement asking for developers for a multi-media project based in Portland, Oregon. See: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200305/msg02155.html I received a few responses of interest and have filled one role but am now in a position to fill the other (Qt GUI development) and must admit, to my embarrassment, that the drive with the contact info has died and was not backed up ... If you responded at that time and are still interested and available, please reply to me or you may call me directly at the Redcellx offices: (503) 295-9680 Thanks very much for your time. -- Respectfully, Erik Winn Development 503 880 2591
no freshness dating inside Packages.gz
There are tons of information categories in the apt Packages file. But one they forgot when making the spec was some kind of date information. For unless a maintainer somehow smuggles it in, say in the version number, $ apt-cache policy icom Installed: 19990819-3 Candidate: 20020923-2 otherwise we offline users have no idea if were looking at something that hasn't changed since the 90's, or was just updated last week, without having to connect our modems to find out. Sure, you don't need to know the date, as you are using sid and did apt-get update, you are assured it's the latest version. Well, one doesn't need the maintainer field either etc.

I just want to thank the security team for doing such a stellar job lately, with both the enormous kernel fixes, and the constant stream of advisories on other packages. Though I kinda hope that will taper off sometime, or we're going to look bad on the security issues per year metrics.. Closes: #69068: ibritish: Isn't 'energise' a word? Closes: #134128: iamerican: doesn't know how to spell nefarious Closes: #151234: ibritish is missing towards, forwards, etc Closes: #165142: iamerican: please add animus, conflate, opine, politicize Note: conflate is only int the large ispell dictionaries and in the large wamerican/wbritish word lists -- I presume it's there for good reason (infrequently used?). If you feel strongly it belongs in the regular dictionaries, please reopen this bug report and I'll consult with upstream and consider moving it. I also have meant for a while to package the large ispell dictionaries (I have already packaged the large English wordlists) -- I *will* get to that one of these years. * Provide a better example for use of the -d parameter Closes: #192400: ispell: Manpage not up to date * Accept NMUs from the dictionaries-common transition; thanks again, Agustin. Closes: #102607: hash files should be 128 character pers string Closes: #123641: ispell: ispell does not use debconf Closes: #164239: Please update your iamerican package to IDWP new policy Closes: #164248: Please update your ibritish package to IDWP new policy * Removed all the control file and rules file weridness created to get us through the dictionaries-common transition; life is so much simpler now. * Debhelper compat 4 allowed me to simplify some more weird stuff in rules, particularly regarding the man pages (thanks, Joey).
