What you've currently got is also a bad hack -- it gets exim stuff installed where it's not wanted. The suggestion of listing every MTA specifically, rather than usuing the virtual package we already have is also a pretty horrible hack. And it precludes the use of dpkg conffile handling for the config snippets in /etc/exim4/conf.d Better to drop support for that than install exim4-base on non exim systems. upload queue at erlangen
The developer's reference lists erlangen as one of the upload queues. However, I used it last week (as I assumed that I wouldn't be able to upload the way I usually did, i.e. directly to ftp-master via ssh). However, I was wondering how long it would take (I haven't really seen any announcement that archive updates are active again). I then tried uploading to ftp-master-anon (which I saw mentioned somewhere), and I got confirmation that my package had been processed very quickly! Thus it seems that erlangen's upload queue is broken, even though it silently accepts packages. In fact, going to ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/Linux/debian/UploadQueue/ it seems that it's been broken since beginning of October. Perhaps it should be disabled, and removed from the developer's reference? Or is something else the matter? Paul Slootman

Then the project machine could have alerted both the project's admin team and the owner of the compromised account. One problem with this is developer's machines that are on dial-up Internet connections. In the case of such machines you can verify the host key but not the IP address. You cannot verify the IP address *exactly*, but you can verify whether the IP address lies within a range. Dial-up users could at least register a certain address range, so as to vastly mitigate the attack risk. Apart from that, as soon as the use of IPv6 broadens, dynamically assigned IP addresses will diminish. But this still leaves the issue of how to deal with dial-up machines. Even if we restrict connections to a single ISP as often dial-up machines are not used with multiple machines, this still isn't necessarily much good, some dial-up ISPs have 50,000 IP addresses. Still, IP address (even if it's a range, not a single address) verification vastly mitigates the attack risk. Finally, if the attacker can compromise the machine and the machine is online (EG permanently connected machines) there's no good options. What's more secure, no good options, or no good options plus IP address verification, even if range-based? Some attack vectors one will never be able to protect against, but it still makes sense to protect against other vectors, doesn't it?

Need help: Idle X-user?
Hi -devel, the program timeoutd was originally written when using X was not a matter of course: timeoutd loggs user out when they reached timeout-restrictions like max. login-time, max. idle-time, etc. Some users asked for X-Support. Well, X works well with No login allowed at all and Login restricted to max. X minutes, but it does not work with Logout, when user U was idle Yminutes. Support for X and idle-logout is not included within timeoutd. My question is: Is there any way to querry how long a X-user is idle? If not, do you think it's okay to write something like IDLE-Logout does not work with X into Readme.Debian and into the config-file(,manpage, ...)? I found no way to check if a user is idle without using extra libraries, and if I use extra libaries, new depencies are needed wich users don't need if they have no X on their box. (these extra-depencies may depend on X, so they need X, etc...) thank you, Dennis

Orphaning Firebird RDBMS
Hi! I haven't (seriously) used Firebird since a year and there's no chance I'll be using anytime soon. It's low maintenance software though as upstream is focused on firebird 1.5/2.0 Therefore I am going to orhpan: * firebird * php4-interbase (depending on firebird) Drop me note if you want to take them over. Else - I'll orphan them formally soon. Cheers, Grzegorz B. Prokopski Description: FireBird - RDBMS based on InterBase 6.0 code The classic flavour uses new process to handle every connection. This results in somewhat slower operation (but it is said it is faster on local connections than super), but also can operate on many processors on SMP machines. This is the traditional flavour. The super flavour uses separate thread to handle every connection. It is has it's adventages (for ex. is usually faster), but also some disadventages (is unable to use more than one CPU on SMP systems, under some circumstances clients can crash all server). Firebird is a relational database offering many ANSI SQL-92 features that runs on Linux, Windows, and a variety of Unix platforms. Firebird offers excellent concurrency, high performance, and powerful language support for stored procedures and triggers. It has been used in production systems, under a variety of names since 1981. Firebird is a commercially independent project of C and C++ programmers, technical advisors and supporters developing and enhancing a multi-platform relational database management system based on the source code released by Inprise Corp (now known as Borland Software Corp) under the InterBase Public License v.1.0 on 25 July, 2000. -- Grzegorz B. Well, if you *rely* on obscurity for your security (ie: if an attacker has free reign if they know the secret you're trying to keep [in this case, that the SSH key is on USB media]), then sure, there's a problem. It's not a problem, however, if it's only *part* of a security regimen. For instance, I'll ask a simple question: does the hacker who installed the hardware keylogger on my machine know that my SSH key is somewhere unusual? Do they even know about SSH keys? If either of those answers is no, I have effectively averted a compromise, whereas even if they *didn't* know, but I didn't use an SSH key, they'd have effective control of my machine. Some food for thought. Obscurity != security, but I've yet to see any effective security regimen which did *not* include some obscurity factors. I've also yet to see anybody post their IP address, userid, and password for their publicly-accessible servers to a public mailing list :)
Assurance measures: ALC (The hidden treasure of Debian)
Hi! We will see here the assurance measures related to life cycle support. This is an area where Debian shines out even from the other open source projects. ALC_DVS.2 Sufficiency of security measures (EAL6, EAL7) ALC_DVS.2.1D The developer shall produce development security documentation. (Policy manual, developer's reference, and the various policies related to project resources.) ALC_DVS.2.1C The development security documentation shall describe all the physical, procedural, personnel, and other security measures that are necessary to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the TOE design and implementation in its development environment. (Well, the word confidentality is not applicable in our case. Otherwise there are numerous measures.) ALC_DVS.2.2C The development security documentation shall provide evidence that these security measures are followed during the development and maintenance of the TOE. (As most of the measures are enforced by technical means, and the rest is mediated by the BTS or e-mail (mostly mailing lists), the evidence is plenty.) ALC_DVS.2.3C The evidence shall justify that the security measures provide the necessary level of protection to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the TOE. (After the recent breakin, one could conclude that they aren't. But the code base isn't touched, and the necessary lessons are being drawn.) ALC_FLR.3 Systematic flaw remediation (above EAL7: no flaw remediation is mandated by any EALs) ALC_FLR.3.1D The developer shall document the flaw remediation procedures provide flaw remediation procedures addressed to TOE developers. (http://www.debian.org/security/) ALC_FLR.3.2D The developer shall establish a procedure for accepting and acting upon all reports of security flaws and requests for corrections to those flaws. (see above) ILC_FLR.3.3D The developer shall provide flaw remediation guidance addressed to TOE users. (see above) ALC_FLR.3.1C The flaw remediation procedures documentation shall describe the procedures used to track all reported security flaws in each release of the TOE. (http://www.debian.org/security/faq#policy http://www.debian.org/security/faq#testing http://www.debian.org/security/faq#contrib) ALC_FLR.3.2C The flaw remediation procedures shall require that a description of the nature and effect of each security flaw be provided, as well as the status of finding a correction to that flaw. (The advisories do that) ALC_FLR.3.3C The flaw remediation procedures shall require that corrective actions be identified for each of the security flaws. (The advisories do that) ALC_FLR.3.4C The flaw remediation procedures documentation shall describe the methods used to provide flaw information, corrections and guidance on corrective actions to TOE users. (Links to advisories, security announce mailing list, and rdf newsfeeds on www.debian.org/security do that.) ALC_FLR.3.5C The flaw remediation procedures documentation shall describe a means by which the developer receives from TOE users reports and enquiries of suspected security flaws in the TOE. ( http://www.debian.org/security/faq#contact) ALC_FLR.3.6C The procedures for processing reported security flaws shall ensure that any reported flaws are corrected and the correction issued to TOE users. (http://www.debian.org/security/faq#lifespan It is done for all released Debian version. I judge that this counts as fulfilling the requirement.) ALC_FLR.3.7C The procedures for processing reported security flaws shall provide safeguards that any corrections to these security flaws do not introduce any new flaws. (http://www.debian.org/security/faq#oldversion) ALC_FLR.3.8C The flaw remediation guidance shall describe a means by which TOE users report to the developer any suspected security flaws in the TOE. ( http://www.debian.org/security/faq#contact) ALC_FLR.3.9C The flaw remediation procedures shall include a procedure requiring timely responses for the automatic distribution of security flaw reports and the associated corrections to registered users who might be affected by the security flaw. ( the advisory mailing list registration counts as a registration, and both the web page and the advisories contain the distribution point for the corrections) ALC_FLR.3.10C The flaw remediation guidance shall describe a means by which TOE users may register with the developer, to be eligible to receive security reports and corrections. However, I have been disappointed with the initrd script for Debian in that support for autodetecting software RAID1 is poor (read: non-existant), and while RAID1 will work if the harddisks are plugged in exactly the same way each time, the fact remains that the configuration is hardcoded in the initrd script so if you move all harddisks on one RAID set to different busses (for instance), it will stop working. This is distinct from the autodetection in the kernel that is capable of automatically scanning all harddisks on all busses to find RAID devices. So yes, maybe initrd/initramfs is the way of the future (I have read proposals that would make loading modules in an initramfs compulsory for all systems), but I think there are still a few issues that need to be resolved first. -- Brian May [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Makeztxt will remove newline characters at the end of lines that contain text so that the paragraphs flow better on the Palm screen. Makeztxt supports the use of regular expressions to automatically generate a list of bookmarks for you. Lastly. makeztxt can also break an existing zTXT file into its components (text, bookmarks, annotations) and store them into separate files. zTXT databases can be opened by the GPLed WeaselReader program in your Palm (http://gutenpalm.sf.net/) -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux shmate 2.4.23-shmate #1 Fri Dec 5 08:07:11 CST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US

Re: Need help: Idle X-user?
Dennis Stampfer [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: timeoutd loggs user out when they reached timeout-restrictions like max. login-time, max. idle-time, etc. Is there any way to querry how long a X-user is idle? You might look at the xscreensaver driver source; the basic answer is yes, about four of them, none of which are guaranteed to be there. If not, do you think it's okay to write something like IDLE-Logout does not work with X into Readme.Debian and into the config-file(,manpage, ...)? IMHO the README.Debian file and package description should be sufficient. Mentioning it in the man page wouldn't hurt; I think splattering it in the config file is going a bit far. -- David Maze [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://people.debian.org/~dmaze/ Theoretical politics is interesting. Thing is, none of this matters. If upstream support .desktop files, then we just run them through the script that converts them to Debian menu entries while installing. dh_installmenu would be a good place to do this. You do realize that the desktop standard has more features than the debian menu system? Why not run it the other way around, convert the existing debian menu entries to .desktop files and work from there? I think that this way would help debian on the desktops. The extra features should be pretty simple to implement - just more text fields. Hardly. The desktop system in KDE-3.2+ and Gnome-2.4+ is not as static and uncustomizable the Debian menu system at the moment.
