Debconf Templates Style Guide now part 6.5.2 of Developers Reference
The document formerly known as the Debconf Templates Style Guide, or DTSG, which I already publicised from time to time, is now part of the Developer's Reference in the Best Packaging Practice section. This document I wrote several months ago, has been rewiewed by Joey Hess and Denis Barbier and I already received several suggestions from many users or package maintainers. It is aimed at giving advices about debconf templates writing with the following two goals: -more consistency among Debian packages in the way they interact with users and administrators -better prepare localisation of that part of Debian -improve the use of the English language in that part of Debian (that is, get better English than the one I've put in DTSG itself, for instance) http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-best-pkging-practices.en.html Section currently numbered as 6.5.2 (please do not put links with the section number as this is likely to change in future versions of the Developers Reference document) Suggestions may be sent as bug reports against the developers-reference pseudo package Matt, I think you can now remove the direct link you put in the developer's corner to my version of DTSG. I'll replace the file in ~bubulle/dtsg an point readers back to the developer's reference document. --

Introducing pmount in Debian / New plugdev group
Hi Debian developers! I am currently responsible for developing the GNOME Utopia stack for Ubuntu and closely work together with Sjoerd Simons who maintains the Debian packages (gnome-volume-manager, hal). Upstream's idea of automatic USB/FireWire device handling is as follows: the hal daemon runs as root, is notified by hotplug about added/removed devices, and adds/removes lines to /etc/fstab for these devices. This allows gnome-volume-manager to mount/unmount hotpluggable devices as normal user. However, I was not satisfied with this solution because of several reasons: 1. Hal's concept is to be a hardware database; it should be policy free and not actually change anything in the system. 2. I do not like programs who mess with a central configuration file like /etc/fstab. A crash at the wrong time, and your system is unbootable. 3. In the last months I found so many segfaults in hal that I outright refuse to let hal run as root. Besides, previous versions allowed all users to modify any key in the database, so it could not be trusted anyway. Even now hal has so many bugs that I feel it is insane to run it as root. I made some modifications to hald which allows it to run as normal user 'hal' with some additional privileges (group membership and kernel capabilities). These modifications went upstream. 4. The security policy of Ubuntu implies that we strictly separate system volumes and user accessible drives. An administrator must be able to trust the integrity of his system partitions (/, /home, /usr, and so on). OTOH, one cannot put any trust in removable devices (USB/FireWire/PCMCIA/CD-ROMs) anyway, so users can do with them whatever they want. So the Ubuntu approach is a bit different: we let hal run as normal user, do not modify /etc/fstab at all and instead use a program called 'pmount' (policy mount) that allows normal users to mount removable devices without an /etc/fstab entries. pmount is now in Debian sid and contains some documentation about the particular policy and features. This concentrates the amount of code that runs as root to a minimum and solves points (1) to (3). Of course hal, gnome-volume-manager and gnome-vfs2 have to be adapted to work with pmount, but this work has been done in Ubuntu and it is easy to port it to Debian proper. We solved (4) by introducing a new group called 'plugdev'. Every user who is a member of this group can access hotpluggable devices (digital cameras, USB drives etc.). pmount can only be executed by members of this group (it is root:plugdev 750), hal runs in this group to be able to detect file systems (but it does not run in 'disk'), and udev assigns the 'plugdev' group to removable devices (static drives remain in group 'disk'). BTW, we also use 'plugdev' for libgphoto (IIRC Debian uses 'camera' for that). This approach has worked great for some months now, and the stable Ubuntu release 4.10 (Warty Warthog) contains it. The Hoary tree (Sid equivalent) contains many enhancements and hotpluggable devices work better than ever before. I would really like to propagate the same approach to Debian. Sjoerd seems to be open to it, but since it involves the addition of a new group and also an udev change, this decision is not confined to the two of us, so I would like to discuss that before. Thanks in advance for comments and have a nice day! Re: Introducing pmount in Debian / New plugdev group
So the Ubuntu approach is a bit different: we let hal run as normal user, do not modify /etc/fstab at all and instead use a program called 'pmount' (policy mount) that allows normal users to mount removable devices without an /etc/fstab entries. pmount is now in It's great to have a pmount (policy mount) program that is completely unrelated to libpmount (portable mount) ;) pgp0pFCXLvntF.pgp Description: PGP signature

Kevin Mark [u] wrote on 09/11/2004 18:29: i made a diagram in xfig of what I think is the debian development model. Could folks give me a few comments on what's not correct. http://kmark.home.pipeline.com/debian.png AFAICT from my limited debian expertise ;-), there is at least one mistake in that diagram: backports are ports of packages from unstable and/or testing to stable, not ports of 3rd party software to stable. Also, backports are _not_ part of Debian/stable. volatile (not volitile) has been discussed for some time now, but to the best of my knowledge, it doesn't currently exist. If you list security source as a source for sources (SCNR), the arrow from debian sources to stable/security is wrong. Security fixes may be merged into the debian sources tree, but you will most likely never see any direct introduction of a package from the generic upload area (which you seem to call debian source) to stable/security. If I'm not completely mistaken myself, a normal DD can upload to: unstable testing-proposed-updates stable-proposed-updates From unstable, a package goes into testing when it has no RC bugs filed against it and is at leats 10 days old. From testing-proposed-updates (which is only useful when testing is frozen during preparation of a new stable release), it goes into testing if the release-manager is convinced that it does more good than harm to include it. From testing, a package goes into stable when testing was frozen, the package has no RC bugs filed against it and a new stable release is published. From stable-proposed-updates, a package goes into stable when the release manager is convinced this update is needed and its negative side-effects (if they exist) are unavoidable and less important than the positive effect of doing that update. security updates are done by the security team. they can (and usually do) upload directly into the security archives (stable/security and sometimes testing/security). volatile is still non-existant and therefore has no policy in place. But I would assume that it should be handled similarly to stable-proposed-updates, but with a different release manager (team) and a very slightly less strict policy regarding acceptable negative side effects. backports are completely outside Debian for now. There has been some talk about it during the volatile discussion, indicating that there should be some backports archive within Debian should be a sort of componentized archive allowing to install selected applications from testing on a stable platform. If this is implemented, the package would not come from a 3rd party source, but from the testing archive (with fixes to allow it to run on stable). regards, sven -- Pinguine können ja bekanntlich nicht fliegen und stürzen deshalb auch nicht ab. Bug Squashing in Latin America, November 27th to 28th
Hello guys, Watching Frankfurt[1] and Sidney[2] guys working in Debian Bug Squashing Parties made me thought it would be useful also that Latin American maintainers could also get to work and beat them on killing RC bugs[3] ;-) Objectives: --- Close more RC bugs than the guys from Frankfurt and Sidney in a healthy competition :-) and help get Sarge out the door. Since we are not proposing a physical place to join, we will be working virtually on #debian-bugs, but also, for Spanish chatting will be at #debian-bugs-es. Since this effort will definitively contribute to global bug squashing, we'll use #debian-bugs-es only for hanging around and fun. Any achievement will be reported to #debian-bugs as well. We propose to be hanging around the entire Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th, at any time you want. Attendance: --- We invite everyone interested on joining the global bug squashing festival, aimed for Latin American maintainers, including some other related communities (South American and Hispano American ;-)). Location: - irc.debian.org (also known as FreeNode) #debian-bugs #debian-bugs-es Thanks: --- Thanks to Sydney's and Frankfurt's community for making these challenges for us. Have you tried to compile/run freemind with any of the available DFSG-free JREs so far? I'm not yet a Debian developer, going through the documentation and the process of becoming one. Surely such a program would need to be suid root, i.e. mode 4750 was meant rather than 750. In a Debian package it should have mode 4754; there is no reason to deny unprivileged users *reading* the binary as long as they cannot use the suid i-node to execute it. Policy §10.9, fifth paragraph. Hmm. What's to stop a user fetching their own version of the pmount binary? Nothing, anymore than there is something to stop a user compiling such a program himself. If so, then a+x mode is safe, and directed by Debian Policy (I think. If not, it's in the Developer's Reference as a good idea). Let's see if abcde 2.2 gets into Sarge. * debian/control - Bumped to 3.6.1.1. No changes needed. * Added support for MPP/MP+(Musepack) encoding. Although I am trying to get 2.2 for Debian Sarge release, mpc seems safe enough to introduce. See corecodec.org for code. * Some POSIX shell corrections (making the code more portable). Thanks to Guillem Jover for pointing the problem out. * CDYEAR is also passed to do_move(), so one can use it for sorting the directories. * Small MacOS X fix, allowing directories with () to work. Thanks to Evan Jones. - On the MacOS X, I still do not know if abcde works correctly. If does not, please, drop a note. Or else. * DOSPLAYLIST also changes / with \. * DATA tracks are now excluded from the ripping process using internally the cdparanoia -Q query option. If using another ripper, it does not work (at least there is no support for them in abcde) (Closes: #112692, #117412). * New 0 choice for None of the above has been introduced. If selected, a template is created and the user encouraged to edit it (Closes: #147683). * New options for when the PLAYLIST already exists: erase, append or keep. * Bug fixes along the code: - abcde.1 corrections and additions - abcde corrections and code reorganization. abcde now exits earlier if some of the options are incompatible. Also the actions are set as variables earlier, so we use less calls to external tools. - abcde.conf additions * The GENRE is munged now in its own mungegenre function, so that no more upper-to-lowercase is done (forced) except if the default is used. * Examples added to the tarball and /usr/share/doc/abcde/examples with two scripts to make abcde kind-of-a ripper daemon. * Add CDDB information to Ogg/Vorbis and FLAC files (Closes: #265358). * Added INTERACTIVE option. Set it to n and there you go, without user interaction. * Changes normalize to normalize-audio (Closes: #267053) * Copes with wav files being erased by the ripping tool. * Small patch to support ()'s in the path under MacOSX. Thanks to Evan Jones for noticing and sending the patch. * Added -w COMMENT. Used to give a comment to a given CD. * Added -W number. Used to combine -T #01 -w CD #. * Added -t number to modify the numbering from a starting point (Closes: #95828). Geez! That is low bug number... * Added -T number to modify also the tag entries on the songs. Currently available for FLAC and Ogg/Vorbis. * Removes trailing spaces (Closes: #280382). * TRACKNAME now combines multi-lines from long CDDB entries. * debian/rules: - s/dh_installmanpages/dh_installman/ Files: babf5f64db4576fcb326ae24fccb3d21 554 sound optional abcde_2.2.0-1.dsc e21dd33ab3b4eca6758976120d8a4f22 62550 sound optional abcde_2.2.0.orig.tar.gz 1064094eaf9c42cbb6169ec5ab6208b3 14710 sound optional abcde_2.2.0-1.diff.gz db1831f670993e62cbb59160d6dfb2cb 75220 sound optional abcde_2.2.0-1_all.deb -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFBkU1YZvwdf4aUbWkRAsWaAJsFysbHr8MWMeyo9ne4kZCcSlfNCgCdG4Ib jzNHEnuot66Xkr1OxsyMSfE= =DW0m -END PGP SIGNATURE- Accepted: abcde_2.2.0-1.diff.gz to pool/main/a/abcde/abcde_2.2.0-1.diff.gz abcde_2.2.0-1.dsc to pool/main/a/abcde/abcde_2.2.0-1.dsc abcde_2.2.0-1_all.deb to pool/main/a/abcde/abcde_2.2.0-1_all.deb abcde_2.2.0.orig.tar.gz to pool/main/a/abcde/abcde_2.2.0.orig.tar.gz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
