PB other applications using icons should seriously consider looking in PB there if they want to find any. clever ones could prune redundant PB icons according to their file format preference. Personally I don't like /usr/share/icons - it's just another place to go looking for things. /usr/share/pixmaps contains xpms and pngs, other formats are surely unnecessary. PB you don't really want to use jpeg in a menu do you? I'd go further than that and say one shouldn't. Is it worth while trying to get some general icon policy established or am I straigning at gnats? I think it's an essential step. I've been keeping an eye on the situation with regards to icons in menu entries for A/DeMuDi, unfortunately I've been distracted with setting up a system for my local arts centre and organising a little conference. *cough* My intention is to contact all the maintainers of apps included in DeMuDi that don't appear to have icons and encourage them to include them - Most of this needs to happen upstream, otherwise the distro will become full of temporary hacks. Part of the hiatus has been caused by my realisation that Debian icon policy is rather unclear. I will resume efforts as soon as time allows. Anyhow, I've posted my notes below. Suggestions welcome. PB another manual does not seem required. but mentionning the use PB of .desktop would be a worth addition to the menu manual. PB see http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ PB here is a minimal .desktop example: PB $ cat /usr/share/applications/freewheeling.desktop PB [Desktop Entry] PB Name=FreeWheeling PB Comment=live looping instrument PB Exec=fweelin PB Terminal=0 PB Icon=freewheeling.xpm PB Type=Application PB Categories=Application;AudioVideo; PB .desktop go in /usr/share/applications and icons in /usr/share/pixmaps PB (or full path). both png and xpm are ok. PB there could actually be some lintian/linda rules that checks if both PB menu and .desktop entries are there and that the icons are installed at PB the correct location. I do agree with all these observations. Let me add that issues related to the menu systems are becoming even more important now that Custom Debian Distributions are entering the scene. Cheers, Free cheers, tim hall http://glastonburymusic.org.uk My hunt for a solution to this particular issue has led me thus far: This is an open posting that I'm intending to send to all maintainers of packages that don't appear to have icons. Please could you let me know if I have my facts right. ;-] Possibly this needs to go on one of the Debian wikis. [?] = Many people have never been happy with the icons provided by debian. There are not enough of them, they are inconsistent in style, and the low resolution and limited colors make them look like escapees from 1989. Lots of users don't bother with them. Debian needs a consistent policy on where icons go - the icon policy is still something to be addressed in future Policy weeklys; however, the few policy weeklys published since then don't seem to address it at all. These guidelines are my attempt to address it from the perspective of AGNULA/DeMuDi - a CDD. They are based on Debian Policy with a view to incorporating freedesktop.org standards. I am only focussing on achieving coherence amongst multimedia applications here. Please, make sure the icons you specify are always available on the system. So, if you want to have an icon with your menu entry, the preferred method is to supply the icon with that package. Also, to prevent the distribution of icons files to turn too much into a mess, please put all icon files in the directory /usr/share/pixmaps - It's all static shareable architecture-independent data. The use of /usr/X11R6/include/X11/pixmaps/ for .XPMs seems to be deprecated, but some packages still use it. KDE keeps its icons (mostly .PNGs) in a sorted-by-theme tree based at /usr/share/icons. Most other WMs read .XPMs out of /usr/share/pixmaps this latter is the standard. A package

No such benefit is provided me by gettext.sh. Hmm, time to report a bug against gettext-base for not having a manual page for gettext.sh... I realize that you're probaly using that example as a rhetorical device, but in fact any widely used shell library _should_ have a man page. For debconf I document /usr/share/debconf/confmodule in confmodule(3). I also think it would be nice if every package that uses debhelper did not have to hardcode /usr/share/debconf/confmodule. There are probably more such scripts in debian than ones that use gettext.sh. However, putting it in any bin directory offends my sense of aesthetics, so I didn't. If there had been a /usr/lib/shell or whatever, I'd have certianly taken advantage of it. I think that would be a useful addition to policy. Again, I say: this is what libexec is for. If we're going to modify policy to allow for a place for such things (and I do, actually, think it's a good idea to have one), we should use the name and location for it that has been in widespread use for years. Libexec: things that are nominally part of or intimately tied to 'executable' code, but which aren't shared libraries (/usr/lib). Shell fragments, etc - stuff that is often currently found in /usr/share/package. Whether it's /usr/libexec, /usr/share/libexec, or something else is up for discussion (the only thing that lives in /libexec that I know of, on any other OS, is the linker that we put in /lib instead); maybe both have purpose. Whether it should be searched by default in various forms of paths, and whether anything in it should ever have an exec bit set, are possible questions (searching it last, if policy says no exec bits, might solve the issue of wanting to be able to use, say, . confmodule or the like). One can also do things like keeping a symlink in /usr/share/package, pointing to /usr/share/libexec, for legacy support/migrations, of course. -- Joel Aelwyn [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,''`. : :' : `. `' `- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I like the -P switch, although there is already a rakefile target that pretty much does what you suggest. I made a modified version of the target for my own needs, also minus docs and such. I'll try and upload my package to people.debian.org/~dnusinow tonight so you can have a look. I think I've managed to detach it from depending on rubygems, but it still requires rake, which is contingent on you :-) - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Who could be able to help SW vendors to support Debian?
During the Solutions Linux expo in Paris, the DD's present at the Debian booth have been approached by a representative from Trend Micro Corp. who develops and sells security software (the most well known being probably a virus scanning software and such similar software suites). We ended with a very interesting and long discussion with their Product Manager for Client/Server messaging products about the proper way for them to support Debian. It seems that such support is a growing request from their customers (some of them being important Ministries in France and probably others worldwide) who use big farms of Debian-based servers. As far as I have understood, supporting Debian for this vendor is a real concern, but they fail to be sure in who to get in touch with for technical issues regarding the compatibility of their products and our distribution in general (which includes direct interaction with the Linux kernel, as far as I have understood from him). Their concernes was also deciding about *which* release of Debian they should support. Though question as one may imagine because just answering thou shalt use stable is obviously not enough. From discussions I previously had with other visitors at the booth, he concluded by himself that focusing their developers on sarge would probably be a better investment than trying to support woody (this is still a matter of months of development, so hopefully sarge will have been released then). Would any people around have pointers which could be given to such people ? Do we already have an entry point for such technical issues as proprietary SW vendors needing technical information about the way to support Debian ? -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The changes between major versions of Request Tracker are typically substantial and one usually wants the opportunity to test an installation of the new version alongside the old version. If their product depends tightly on kernel stuff, then they should base their support matrix on kernel version, not on distribution. Point them at Platform Computing as an example of how to do it with LSF. They support Linux, and they don't give a stuff what distribution you're running. They support certain kernels, and certain C libraries, and other than that they don't care. And they're not too precise about kernel version - on X86 you can run any 2.4 or 2.6 kernel, and any 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 glibc. They're a little pickier on other architectures (they don't support 2.6 on either Alpha or Itanium yet). Tim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Obviously some software such as VmWare or the Nvidia drivers need tight integration, but providing open source shims can minimize the variation between different host kernels. This arch is by default your architecture your are developing for using a cross-compiler suite. If no architecture (-a|--arch) is specified the original implemenations apt-get, apt-cache and apt-config are executed instead so nothink changes for those uses who do not use this extension. It was one gole not to break today functionality! -- Raphael Bossek I think that -a is only really useful if you can also easily specify the --root option to dpkg. Right now the only way to get apt to do this is by modifying some of the Dir:: variables and wedging --root= into the Dpkg::options and... well, it's less than trivial. Diversion of APT tools by dpkg-cross (apt-get,apt-cache,apt-config)
Hi, I'm a active member of the dpkg-cross package part of the www.emdebian.org project. A long outstanding feature request was to support APT for dpkg-cross. The realisation result in diversion of apt-get, apt-cache and apt-config which is our CVS pending for a new release to experimental as soon as the APT wrapper is stable. The Debian Policy Manaual advice me to discuss this diversion here. Please feel free to comment the consequences of this diversion. dpkg-cross provide a extension for apt-get, apt-cache and apt-config with the command line option -a|--arch where your cross-host architecture can be specified. This arch is by default your architecture your are developing for using a cross-compiler suite. If no architecture (-a|--arch) is specified the original implemenations apt-get, apt-cache and apt-config are executed instead so nothink changes for those uses who do not use this extension. From my point of view the extension of the APT tools by diversion do not break today functionality. It was one gole not to break today functionality! -- Raphael Bossek pgpIPjjUlgiTS.pgp Description: PGP signature
Re: Diversion of APT tools by dpkg-cross (apt-get,apt-cache,apt-config)
Hi Paul, I think that -a is only really useful if you can also easily specify the --root option to dpkg. We use dpkg-cross as wrapper for installation. dpkg --root is not required for this APT wrapper. So some way to do that would be a good idea, I think. The APT wrapper is used to installed foreign architecture's packages and all their dependencies with dpkg-cross without have to bother with it manually. Of course, the other APT functions are available too: source, build-deps etc. Just my .02 from trying to get apt and apt-build to work with dpkg-cross awhile back. The apt-build tools works after some tweaks with this APT wrapper. I intent to publish the minor modification on apt-build in the next weaks, I hope. -- Raphael Bossek -- 10 GB Mailbox, 100 FreeSMS http://www.gmx.net/de/go/topmail +++ GMX - die erste Adresse für Mail, Message, More +++ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
