Re: Easy third-party package installer for debian-based distributions

2005-09-19 Thread Wouter Verhelst
On Mon, Sep 19, 2005 at 04:10:00AM +0200, Sami Dalouche wrote:
 Hi,

Sorry for being concerned with usability issues (hence average joe) while
dealing with the way debian works. I guess that only ubuntu-devel was
 interested by this message then.

I'm not saying that.

What I'm saying is that I've seen many, many such scenarios that were
all based on how a hypothetical average joe is going to work with his
Debian-based computer, without actually checking things with reality
first. Unless you know an average joe who'll be interested in installing
a .deb by double-clicking on it, I don't think there's much value in
coming up with a solution for that 'problem'.

The way I see it, people who'll want to install third-party software
will either
* be competent enough to do it by themselves (and won't need nor use any
  graphical tools to help them),
* have an LSB package they want to install (hence, a framework for
automatically adding lines to /etc/apt/sources.list is quite useless
  to them),
* have a tarball they need to unpack over their / filesystem (or in
  their /usr/local, or whatnot), or
* have a computer-savvy neighbour whom they'll ask to do it for them.

I don't think it's likely that there'll be many people who'll download a
.deb, feed it to the packaging system through some GUI, and expect it to
work; so IMO it's not worth the effort to create a framework that will
allow this. And even if it was, it's possible to make it possible to
install a .deb by using the tools already there, and just modifying
the relevant .desktop file.

I am not claiming that synaptic is hard to use, (it can even be easier in some
use cases), I am just claiming that adding a third party repository can be
difficult for a newcomer, and my post was about trying to find an acceptable
 solution to this problem.

You've failed to do that, IMO.

Everything is difficult to newcomers. Always has been, always will be.
The correct way to help them out is not to hide away features inside
obscure binary files, hence adding more complexity for your users to
understand the bigger picture, but to make it easier for newcomers to
understand things.

And yes, maybe third party are not competent enough to provide decent
 packages.
but if we don't even provide a framework they can build upon, they are never
 going to use it...

 So, as a summary :
 - apt-get dpkg solutions don't fulfill all the requirements :

 1) Does not subscribe to future updates
 2) Does not allow the third party entity to provide several packages

 - some people spoke about autopackage. I would be pleased to hear about some
links detailing how autopackage plans to integrate with apt/dpkg.

autopackage is a bad idea:

* It overwrites files in your package management-managed system,
* It does not interact with the package manager to register and
  deregister packages

Hence, it's a very likely source of hard-to-trace bugs (becuase the
package foo you're using is differently compiled from the package dpkg
thinks is installed and from the package bar, which uses foo, expects to
find). Don't use it.

-EL/-EB/-el/-eb are commonly used gcc switches to select endianness.
OTOH, the host configuration uses arm*b-* or arm*be-* for big endian

This is increasingly true, especially with naive users not using ~/ much

Unlike Marco, I do see a lot of value in reorganising at least _some_ of

Also, if people do not like a prefix of $HOME because it places visible

Send a patch.

There is also the problem of /etc/hotplug/blacklist, which will not be
removed until hotplug will be manually purged and may have been modified
locally (and what you see from one side as an automatic upgrade

The hotplug package has been disabled and should be manually purged.

No, but I expect that more and more packages in the future will require

This may appear weird, but you can have a static /dev with udev too.

Interesting, but it doesn't solve the problem of telling a backup

This is the wrong way round, IMHO: rather than having to examine every

(and never be sure of that: what files in .evolution can I safely remove as
caches, and what ones are essential config? is it safe to remove / not

icu, vips transition to testing

2005-09-19 Thread Jay Berkenbilt

Though grep-excuses shows them to be valid candidates, both icu and
vips appear to be not transitioning to testing because of making
packages uninstallable on alpha (according to
http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=icu and corresponding
for vips), but I don't see any evidence that they actually will make
packages uninstallable on alpha. Am I missing something (including
possibly some announcement), or is something wrong? It seems like,
disregarding m68k, icu, xerces25, xerces26, libxml-xerces-perl, vips,
and nip2 should all be able to transition. Is this the case, or have
I overlooked something? I don't see why these transitions should
happen on their own. Thanks for any resolution or explanation.

Is the scenario in question that package A2 replaces package A1 and a
new version of package B that used to depend upon A1 now depends upon
A2 such that replacing A1 with A2 would make B in testing
uninstallable even though an upgrade of B would resolve the problem?
(That's a mouthful.) I'd have to think a bit to convince myself that
detecting this in the general case would be computationally infeasible
(though it seems like a distinct possibility that it would be for
large numbers of dependencies), but I can certainly accept that it is
tricky to code and, more importantly, not currently coded, so thanks
for the hint. :-)

Changed-By: Peter Palfrader [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
cu - call up another system
uucp - Unix to Unix Copy Program
Closes: 312466
Changes:
 uucp (1.07-14) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Update FSF snail mail address in debian/copyright.
   * Since uucp.postinst and uucp.prerm call update-inetd we need to
depend on netbase - add this.
   * Lintian override killall-is-dangerous.
   * Add @dircategory Networking tools to uucp.texi.
   * One only needs the master info file, like 'uucp.info', not every
part like 'uucp.info-1' thru -8 in debian/uucp.info. Remove the
rest, since the new makeinfo only splits it into 2 files anyway.
   * And increase standards-version from 3.6.1 to 3.6.2.
 .
 uucp (1.07-13) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Upgrade from pre 1.07-10 would fail if there is no /etc/uucp/call
file. Make the chowning in postinst conditional on existance of
the file. Thanks to Michael Tokarev for reporting this problem
 (closes: #312466).

   * Sending output to the syslog from shell has long been a bit nasty in
d-i. We can pipe things to logger, but that loses the program's exit
code. Add log-output to fix this; you give it a tag, a program name, and
the program's arguments, it runs that program sending the output to
syslog with the specified tag, and then exits with the same exit code as
 the subsidiary program.

Description:
libltdl3 - A system independent dlopen wrapper for GNU libtool
libltdl3-dev - A system independent dlopen wrapper for GNU libtool
 libtool- Generic library support script
libtool-doc - Generic library support script
Closes: 219490 265005 302484
Changes:
 libtool (1.5.20-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New maintainer (Closes: #302484)
   * New upstream release (Closes: #265005)
 - Configure test to detect -fPIC support in combination with other CFLAGS
could fail to detect if it's supported. (1.5.16) (Closes: #219490)
 - ia64 tests should have been fix, run them again. (1.5.10)
 - Fix .libs/.libs/libfoo.so link problem when linking against an other lib
   from the same package. (1.5.8)
   * Enable gcj on hppa again since gcj-4.0 is available on it.
   * Enable the test suite on m68k again, slow is not a good reason not to run
 it.
   * Move ltdl.m4 from libtool to libltdl-dev package, where it belongs.
Add a conflicts/replaces from libltdl-dev to the libtool package.
   * Remove usr/share/libtool/libltdl3.
   * Make the libtool.m4 in /usr/share/libtool a symlink to the one in
 /usr/share/aclocal.
   * libltdl3-dev.preinst: No longer remove the old directory on upgrade.
libltdl3-dev.preinst does nothing now so remove the file.
   * libtool.postinst: We don't run ltconfig anymore, so don't play with
 cc's alternatives.
   * Put the config.guess and config.sub symlinks in the package instead
of creating them in the libtool.postinst. Remove the libtool.postinst
and libtool.prerm scripts since they do nothing now.
   * Add AUTHORS, README, THANKS and TODO in the docs dir.
   * Remove obsolete conflicts/replaces for libltdl0.1 and libltdl0,
 it's not even in woody.
   * Split out patches, and convert to using dpatch
   * Always do a full bootstrap of the configure scripts before
building so I only have to patch 1 file.
   * Embed the debian version in libtool.m4 and ltmain.in/sh
   * Add a watch file.

Closes: 287884 300399 320724
Changes:
 openswan (1:2.2.0-11) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Transition upload: depend on libgmp3c2 instead of libgmp3 now (no changes
to source package at all, only recompiled).
Closes: #320724: openswan: does not install due to bad libgmp3 dependency
   * Fixed signedness issues and other source code quirks to make it compile
with gcc 4.0. Thanks to Andreas Jochens for the patch (included it in a
modified form and extended it at some places). However, there are many
more cases where the current gcc from unstable comes up with warnings in
this source code. Therefore enabled the -Werror flag when compiling for
this transitional upload (define WERROR to be empty in debian/rules).
Closes: #287884: openswan: FTBFS (amd64/gcc-4.0): pointer targets in
passing argument 6 of 'recvfrom' differ in signedness
Closes: #300399: openswan: FTBFS (amd64/gcc-4.0): array type has

lirc-modules-source - Linux Infra-red Remote Control support (kernel modules)

lirc-x - Linux Infra-red Remote Control support (X dependent parts)
Closes: 301590 302430 302487 312102 317158 328697
Changes:
 lirc (0.7.1pre2-8) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Changed priority from extra to optional, to get rid of override
 disparities.
   * Apply patch from zapdvb to irxevent, that also contains patch from
#326703, making lirc more stable when used with cpu intensive applications
 like mplayer (Closes: #328697).
   * Apply japanese debconf translation (Closes: #302487).
   * Fixed fuzzy string in debconf .po files (Closes: #302430). Also updated
 es.po.
   * Corrected lirc-modules-source.conf so that it documents the right way to
separate the list of drivers (should be space separated, not comma
 separated). (Closes: #312102).
   * libusb-dev is already listed in Build-Depends, so this bug should have
 been already fixed (Closes: #317158).
   * Find the kernel source by testing for $KSRC/include/linux/version.h.
 (Closes: #301590).

Closes: 326176
Changes:
 jetty (5.1.5rc1-4) unstable; urgency=low
 .
Patch from Oyvind Harboe [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 .
   * Fixed rc script /etc/init.d/jetty. stop could leave dangling
/var/run/jetty.pid. Fixed this by adding --oknodo to
 start-stop-daemon --stop command.
   * Removed trailing / from LOGDIR which caused
 /var/log/out.log not to be created.
   * /etc/init.d/jetty start will now deal more gracefully with a
 dangling /var/run/jetty.pid. A dangling jetty.pid is detected
 and ignored.
   * Closes: #326176.
