architecture-specific release criteria - requalification needed
Hi all, It has been discussed for a while already. While we have release criteria for packages, up until now we don't have any for the architectures. However, decisions made about an architecture affect both our users (and developers) and the release cycle much more than decisions about an individual package. For that reason, we discussed in multiple meetings, together with porters, ftp-masters and other people more than once how the criteria should look. Also, there was more than one discussion on debian-devel. [1, 2] In essence, the requirements that are being established exist to ensure that the port is in good enough shape and sufficiently well-supported that: * our users will benefit from the architecture's presence in a release, * the architecture will give our users the same support and stability as any other architecture in the stable release, * the architecture's inclusion doesn't negatively impact other architectures or the release process as a whole. These criteria do _not_ control addition of an architecture to unstable, but rather apply to architectures which the ftp-masters have accepted into unstable and are targetting testing and the next stable release. In other words, an architecture that fails these criteria can still be part of unstable. And, of course as always, the release team can grant exceptions - which is of course an exception, and we need to be convinced that this is the right action. Over the next two months, all of the current release architectures will need to requalify for inclusion in etch according to the following criteria. See the bottom of this mail for details. Now, looking more into details, the criteria are: | * Availability: | The architecture needs to be available for everybody, i.e. The reason for this should be obvious | it must be available without NDAs and Same for this. We're about free software. | it must be possible to buy machines on the market. The reason should be obvious: Our users should be able to use the architecture. Of course, it is known that there will be some timespan where a product line is end-of-lifed by its hardware manufacturer, but still useful to users (and still possible to buy the product). So, we also don't directly drop the architecture on the floor, but on the other hand, there will be a day where the port's porters and Debian cannot longer give the port that much support that we can do stable releases with it - and even a day when we cannot longer support that port at all. | * Developer availability: The architecture must have a |developer-available (i.e. debian.org) machine that contains the |usual development chroots (at least stable, testing, unstable). This criterion is there so that any developer can actually find out what the issue is if his package fails to work on a specific architecture. Of course, when adding a new architecture, there will be a time without a stable release, and there will be some special arrangement how such a machine can be provided without having even some packages in testing. But that's not meant as a no-go, as long as we are quite optimistic that adding the new machine will actually work in time. | * Users: The architecture needs to prove that developers and users |are actually using it. Five Developers needs to certify in that |they're actively developing on this architecture, and it needs to |be demonstrated that at least 50 users are using the platform. We |are counting users, not machines; e.g., one s390-installation |with 50,000 users fullfils the user criterion just fine. As already discussed multiple times, the 50 users really means 50 individuals using that architecture. Both criteria are there to make sure that an architecture gets just enough usage so that architecture-specific bugs are found in time. | * Installer: The architecture must have a working, tested installer. Obviously, we need an installer. Though that doesn't say debian installer, we think that our users expect that there are not too many different ways for them to install the released version of Debian etch one day. | * Porters and Upstream support: There is support by the porters and |upstream. This is especially true for the toolchain and the |kernel. Obviously, we cannot keep a port alive if there is nobody doing support for it. Of course, it is quite possible that Debian and upstream support is done by the same persons. And our experiences with support of gcc-4.0 on m68k have shown that it is possible to get such issues fixed, if the porters are notified in time and are really interested in their port (and if there are enough porters). | * Archive coverage: The architecture needs to have successfully |compiled the current version of the overwhelming part of the |archive, excluding architecture-specific packages. Our back-of-the-envelope number for this criterion is 98%. As pointed out multiple times during recent

access to debian mirror pools
Hello All: I have noticed a behavior which I can't quite understand. I had noticed that some of my computers getting files from http.us.debian.org had consistently lower bandwidths than others pointed to the same source. I have investigated this by grabbing individual files with wget and I have discovered that the same IP address is selected each time I run wget on a specific computer. Different computers access different IP addresses but each one ALWAYS uses the same one. I have tried using the --no-dns-cache as in the wget manual but that changes nothing. I was under the impression that http.us.debian.org is a random pool, and indeed, when I use the 'host http.us.debian.org' command repeatedly, I get the IP addresses in a different order every time, it is strange that wget (and apparently apt-get as well) doesn't randomize. Any insights? Is this a bug, if so for what package? Carlo -- Carlo U. libsvn-javahl: call for help
Hi all, as some might have noticed, the last subversion upload do unstable introduced a package for the java bindings, libsvn-javahl. However, David Kimdom added support for this because people asked and it Just Worked (tm), AFAICT. The current situation, though, is that it's completely broken, and making the build of subversion fail on several arches (not counting those such as arm on which kaffe is not available). And the problem is that not a single member of the Debian Subversion Team (among which, actually, only Peter Samuelson and I seem to be active) has the knowledge or interest to fix that properly. Now, we have two possible situations for the next days: either someone will volunteer and get that fixed soon, so it Just Works (tm) once again and we can leave it there for people who really care for it, or it will be dropped, as, more than under-maintained, it's broken and breaking the rest of subversion. Use binutils-dev, link to libbfd.a? The source API changes relatively rarely, it probably won't bite you. I agree that the source API is stable, but this strategy has has bitten me at least once. GCL builds an internal bfd symbol table of itself for use in relocating loaded object modules (much like lush). Under most cases, it never invokes the linker again in the process of building maxima, acl2, axiom, and any other dependent packages, and all is well. On mips, mipsel, hppa, ia64 and alpha (GCL stable), and ia64 and hppa (gclcvs), native object relocation is not yet implemented, so GCL builds its dependent packages by running ld at several points against a libgcl.a that it ships. I've had this link produce garbage on these platforms due to a binary api incompatibility between the binutils available at gcl build time, and that available at dependent package build time. When I enforce the version dependency (on the static libbfd) in the package control mechanism, I run into these 'uninstallable' issues too frequently forcing a rebuild anyway -- I might as well depend on a shared lib and have this happen automatically. Of course the right thing to do is to extend the native object relocation to ia64 and hppa -- this is of course GCL's problem, but it will take some time. Perhaps the second best is to make use of a configure option in GCL to build its own local bfd snapshot and ship this in libgcl.a, but this is burdensome in the long run too. Another alternative is to ship the C source of the bfd symbol building table routines and compile and run this all over again when using GCL to build its dependencies, but this truly appears too unwieldy. Hello Raphaël, I just freed about 25 GB of disk space on alioth. That space was occupied by the old amd64/gcc-4.0 archive which was used to prepare the Debian transition from gcc-3.3 to gcc-4.0. Now that the transition to gcc-4.0 is almost complete, that archive will no longer be necessary for any purpose. Generally, alioth has been used to host full Debian repositories for a long time now. The various amd64 repositories have been hosted on alioth from the beginning of 2004 until a few month ago and the ppc64 repository has been hosted on alioth since December 2004. The request for the debian-ppc64 alioth project explicitly stated that a binary package repository for native ppc64 packages would be created. I understand from your mail that the policy for alioth projects has changed since then. I currently have no other place to host a public archive for the native 64-bit Debian-ppc64 port. Because of this, I did not yet delete the debian-ppc64 archive from alioth as you requested. I hope that someone has an idea what to do with the debian-ppc64 archive and that alioth can host it until a better solution is found. The ppc64 archive currently has a size of about 30 GB, but I will probably be able reduce this to about 15 GB by dropping old package versions. Hopefully this will be acceptable. Just a note about the fact that the X packages caused this situation. The X Strike Force is currently planning to transition to the upcoming modular build system for xorg-x11. Right now we're preparing the last major round of monolithic packages (the 6.9 series) but we'll be transitioning to the modular series as soon as possible. g77 - gfortran transition and AMD64 g77 bugs
Dear list, [CC'ed to debian-science since I imagine that's where most of the FORTRAN users are. Please follow up to -devel.] With the latest g++ ABI transition soon to be finished, I have to ask whether a similar transition is planned for g77 to gfortran. It appears that the ABI of code generated with the two compilers is different. Both compilers have a -ff2c / -fno-f2c option pair controlling whether the code is ABI-compatible to that generated by f2c. But in g77, the default is -ff2c, while it is the opposite for gfortran. From the info manual for gfortran: _Caution:_ It is not a good idea to mix Fortran code compiled with `-ff2c' with code compiled with the default `-fno-f2c' calling conventions as, calling `COMPLEX' or default `REAL' functions between program parts which were compiled with different calling conventions will break at execution time. _Caution:_ This will break code which passes intrinsic functions of type default `REAL' or `COMPLEX' as actual arguments, as the library implementations use the `-fno-f2c' calling conventions. Gfortran claims not to be completely ready for use as a g77 replacement yet (and someone who has attempted to compile Cernlib with it reports a large number of problems yet). But eventually that day will come... we should have some transition plan in mind by then. In addition, (speaking as Cernlib Debian maintainer) I have a specific question about g77 in Debian. There are two g77 bugs that can cause significant problems in mixed FORTRAN/C applications on AMD64 machines: http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=15397 http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=17541 Could someone tell me whether it is likely that both will eventually be fixed in the g77-3.4 available in Debian? If so, in what timeframe? The latter is fixed upstream, but the former is apparently unfixed. It can apparently be worked around with the -fno-f2c flag. But this (from the first half of my email) will be incompatible with any current FORTRAN libraries in Debian. regards, -- Kevin B. init.d script for iptables ruleset
Hello -- I guess this is the right place to dump an idea, right ? Here it goes. I wondered about a clever way to load my iptables ruleset via init.d's script. Surprisingly, I didn't find any with Debian. I didn't search that much though. I just wrote one that please me and will dump it here so that it might please others too. Basically, /etc/init.d/iptables parses the ruleset defined in /etc/network/ruleset. Into that ruleset, you can define variables, configure some sysctl values, load kernel modules, and, obviously, declare some filtering rules using defined variables.. Not tested with other shells than bash. Script and sample ruleset file are attached. Hope this can be usefull. Cheers, Samuel iptables Description: Binary data ruleset Description: Binary data

Re: last change to save (adopt) some packages
Thomas Bushnell wrote: This is not the correct way to orphan a package. True. However, it is entirely legitimate for a maintainer to decide that a package is worthless and withdraw it, which is what Andres Salomon is planning to do. In fact, it's a kindness to the QA volunteers. The orphaning process is properly for a package where the maintainer no longer has time or energy to maintain it, but thinks that it should still be in Debian (perhaps because it's widely used, or a dependency of some other maintainer's package). Using it for a package which the maintainer thinks should be removed is a bad idea, as it gives unnecessary work to QA. So, Andres, please do file bugs against the ftp.debian.org pseudopackage requesting that the packages be removed, with the code RoM (== request of maintainer) in the header. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. It's uncommon for users to do it, and as long as they read the NEWS.Debian email before rebooting nothing bad will happen anyway. Almost every time a user does it, it's because it's critical. You cannot expect users to read the NEWS.Debian in every package they upgrade before every reboot. The absolute minimum functional upgrade path is to Conflict: with all package versions providing old-style blacklists, and to abort early in preinst with a loud warning if any user-specified blacklists are present on the system (much akin to the way libc6 installation aborts on all kinds of dangerous conditions).
