Looking at the docs the tool seems to be able to work on any set of debian packages provided as Packages entries provided on standard input. I would thus rephrase the above paragraph as: This software checks for a set of Debian packages (provided as Packages entries) whether it is possible to satisfy the dependencies and conflicts of all involved packages within the set. Better to ask for an advice of a native English speaker, but my point is to emphasize the set of packages rather then the distribution. You are right. My usage of the word distribution comes from the terminology of the edos project http://www.edos-project.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome (where this tool, and many others, originated). In the context of this project a distribution is a set of packages containing possibly multiple versions of a package name. The debian reading of the word distribution excludes this. Preliminary packages are available at http://people.debian.org/~treinen/debcheck/ I suggest to add to the manpage an hint that the Packages file is a suitable input for the tool. For the moment it is in the EXAMPLES section of the manpage, but I'll make this more explicit. I saw that there is also an rpmcheck tool, which does the same for .rpm packages. Don't you plan to package this as well? What about providing an unique binary package (maybe called pkgcheck) with the two binaries? For the moment I create two binary packages, one with the debcheck tool for deb packages, and another one with the rpmcheck tool which does the analogous thing on rpm packages. I forgot to mention this in my ITP. If you are worried about the size: upstream links them separately and they are 130 Kb each, but I'm pretty confident that linking a single executable with two different names and the usual speculation about Sys.argv.(0) would dramatically cut down the total size ... I'll have a look into this, thanks for the suggestion. -Ralf. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Using defoma for building package ?
Hi, I am packaging a game, Wormux. This game use the font DejaVuSans which is already a Debian package. How can I use Defoma (I think this is the tool to use for this) to get this font path when building my package so that it could depend on the DejaVuSans package rather than including the font in the wormux-data package. Or maybe does it exist a debhelper for this but I can not get is name... Note: I RTFM :-) and had a look at several others game package (penguin-racer, gltron and some others) and they all embbed the font files into the -data package. Bug#365240: ITP: seam -- virtual machine architecture and library
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Kari Pahula [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Package name: seam Version : 1.3.0 Upstream Authors : Thorsten Brunklaus [EMAIL PROTECTED] Leif Kornstaedt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Andreas Rossberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Guido Tack [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://www.ps.uni-sb.de/seam/ * License : MIT/X Programming Lang: C++ Description : virtual machine architecture and library SEAM (Simple Extensible Abstract Machine) is designed to be language- and platform-independent, to be simple and based on few principled services. - Uniform data representation and memory management. All datastructures used to represent computations, including code and threads, reside in an abstract store, which represents an abstract graph of data nodes. Language specific datastructures are modelled on top of the language-independent store structures. The store manages the allocation of nodes and their efficient layout in memory. - Platform-independent external representation. Store values are converted to a portable representation during export (pickling), and converted back during import (unpickling). A language-independent transfer language is defined to describe values independent from platform. Unpickling operates with respect to runtime-pluggable language-dependent transformation. For example, language specific code can be instantiated either to byte code or to native code. - Abstract execution model. Computations are defined by a generic evaluator interface. SEAM supports arbitrarily many codes and evaluators to be used at the same time and interact freely. In particular, common virtual machine services like foreign function interfaces are easily expressible. . SEAM is used successfully to implement the new virtual machine underlying the Alice Programming System. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15.6 Locale: LANG=C, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Using defoma for building package ?
Hi! * artefact [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060428 11:06]: I am packaging a game, Wormux. (Sorry, should have told that in my previous mail) One of my packages has a similar problem. I found it the easiest way to depend on the font package, preventing the font to be installed in my package, and creating a symlink to the font at the place where my programm expected the font to be. I hardcoded the path for the symlink, guessing fonts don't change their place very often. So no defoma magaic in my package. As far as I know it is not (1) (but who knows ? :-) The answer is (3). You can find a formal proof of NP-completeness by reduction of 3SAT on page 49 of this document: http://www.edos-project.org/xwiki/bin/download/Main/Deliverables/edos-wp2d1.pdf and the reverse reduction of dependency satisfiability into the satisfiability problem of Boolean formulas on page 60 of this document: http://www.edos-project.org/xwiki/bin/download/Main/Deliverables/edos-wp2d2.pdf In fact, the debcheck tool I talked about (which is not to be confused with the tool of the same name written by weasel, and which is currently used by the qa team) is based on a translation of the problem into satisfiability of a Boolean (propositional) formulae, and then a custom build SAT solver. The apparent paradox that satisfibiality of Boolean propositional formulas, though being a NP-complete problem, can often be solved quite efficiently is well known in the community of so-called SAT solvers (see, for instance, at the end of the wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_satisfiability_problem). This surprising observation can be explained by the fact that hardness results in complexity theory are about *worst-case* complexities. The problem instances we encounter in practice are often much better behaved than the worst case, they are not even randomly choosen. In fact we do not expect the behaviour of a the tool to degrade when we pass from 20.000 packages to 200.000 or to 2.000.000 (except by a linear factor, of course), provided that the inter-dependencies between packages do not become more complicated. I hope this explains it. I would like to include some relevant stuff from the EDOS deliverables into the documentation of my tool, but I will need a permission from the EDOS project for that. -Ralf. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
