Re: debdelta

2006-06-02 Thread Nikita V. Youshchenko
 The command 'debdelta-upgrade' is meant to be run between 'apt-get
  update' and 'apt-get upgrade'; it downloads .debdelta files and
  recreate the new .deb files from them; always using the *installed* old
  version of the .deb, and not the old .deb file itself.

Is it safe - e.g. in case of localy-modified config files?

Well, not until I have worked out what to do about makedev. Since
mdadm can now properly create nodes as needed, I think it would be

Or is the policy to be interpreted that I must not do that and

Well, for my part, it's actually slightly more complicated than that.

Yes, you should bring a government-issued ID, and no, having an ID card
that is not trustable should not be considered acceptable.

However, on every key signing party, especially on large ones, there
will be people unfamiliar with such events, who may or may not
understand that the type of ID they bring is problematic. Therefore, it
is your duty to verify that the ID which is shown in front of you is
acceptable -- even if you suspect that the person in question does know
what type of ID he or she should have brought to the party.

If you think it is safe to assume that random people on KSPs will bring
trustable IDs, then your practices are untrustable. It must be assumed
that the ID card of the person you're looking at is untrustable unless
proven otherwise, because the card may be something totally worthless,
on purpose or otherwise.

Therefore, shouting that someone is a forger because he brought an ID
that can't be trusted is just as unacceptable as the act of bringing
that ID card.

I've found (and fixed) another reason for being slow:
Vivaldi was running a busy polling updatedb in one of its chroots. For some
reason an upgrade triggered the start of cron in the caml chroot and was
pulling CPU power away from the buildd, which runs at a lower priority.
Christian found another problem with two parallel started buildds, which not
only causes CPU wasted time, but as well build failures. See the other

Well, someone could use the database on Buildd.Net to generate such a graph.
I assume that the total number reflects the number of source packages.
Combined with the number of changes in Needs-Build it might be possible to
get the wanted data out of the existing data. Otherwise you'll need to track
*-all.txt for changes to state Needs-Build and look for new packages/newly
uploaded source packages.
I'll put that on the Buildd.Net ToDo list...

Software Patents: Was: Re: Re: Is anyone packaging `lame' ?

2006-06-02 Thread Chris Walters
 The existing European software patents were granted based on the
 assumption that you can differentiate between a computer program and
 its underlying ideas. I think such a distinction is indeed possible,
 and granting theese patents does not contradict Article 52. But I
 strongly believe that as a matter of policy, software should be
 privileged in such a way that creating, distributing and using it
 cannot infringe any patents.

Regarding software patents, it is my understanding, in the USA, of
course that algorithms (the underlying ideas) can be patented. Both
the encoder and decoder for mp3 files are based on algorithms - the
particular coding implementation is unimportant, as long as it uses the
algorithm. This is one reason why some image, encryption and
compression (think LZH) formats are not available or are non-free.

Software code can be copyrighted, but that is an easy thing to get
around - even if you got your original idea from some copyrighted code.
 Patents are not easy to get around. They totally protect all
implementations of the procedures used to do x (whatever x is).

If the EU follows the lead of the USA, then there can be some serious
future problems for the open source community.

Just my humble opinion on an old thread,
Chris

  Patents are not easy to get around. They totally protect all

Only if they are enforcable in court. Regarding many multimedia related
software, there is indeed an ugly lot of software patents around, and it
is very unclear if they would succeed in court if somebody would
distribute software which implement ideas described by a patent.

I don't think debian has decided on a more or less 'official' position
regarding software patents. There many packages in debian, which are
suspected to implement many ideas described by software patents. I don't
know of any case were debian had to explain in court. This causes a lot
of confusion about what and what not to upload to debian. E.g. it is
very unclear to the mplayer guys why xine, vlc, gstreamer etc is already
in debian.

It is of course a somewhat political matter how debian as project should
act in this matter. If there already is somewhere a summary with
conclusions about this subject, I'd be more than happy to be hit by a
cluebat.

  Programming Lang: C
  Description : simple puzzle game involving untangling planar graphs

gPlanarity is a simple puzzle game involving untangling planar graphs
for fun and prizes. If you tend to get addicted to cute little math
puzzles, this one is a doozy.

gPlanarity is a super-clone of the flash Planarity game written by John
Tantalo. The original Planarity ran well in IE and Firefox on other
platforms, but was slow and liked to lock up or abort under Linux
browsers.

gPlanarity implements gameplay identical to the original Planarity but
adds some UI and game extras around the basic game such as multiple
board generation algorithms, puzzle boards, complete backing state,
group select/drag and so on.

Bug#369933: RFA: flwm -- Fast Light Window Manager

2006-06-02 Thread Bill Allombert
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Dear developers,

I request an adopter for the flwm package, that would spend more time
wit this package than I do. I am still using flwm though.

FLWM is a lightweight window-manager using the FLTK library. There is no
major issue with this package, upstream is alive but not very
responsive, and the code is rather clean. Most issues are due to changes
in the FLTK library that need to be compensated.

The package description is:
 Flwm is an attempt to combine the best ideas from several
 window managers. The primary influence and code base is from
 wm2 by Chris Cannam. Primary features copied from wm2 are:
 .
  - Does not look like Windoze.
  - Nifty sideways title bars.
  - No icons. You deiconify by picking off a pop-up menu.
This means no space is wasted by icons.
  - Really small and fast code.
 .
 It is enhanced by the author's own further nutty ideas:
 .
  - Does not use shape extension, more standard resize handles.
  - Occupies as little screen space as possible. The border and titles
are as thin as I could possibly make them. And maximized
windows waste only 15 pixels horizontally and zero (count'em)
pixels vertically!
  - Independent maximize buttons for width height, close button.
  - Understands Motif, KDE, and Gnome window manager hints.
  - Multiple desktops, controlled from the same menu as the icons.

Cheers,
--
Bill. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Imagine a large red swirl here.

Oh crap. This looks exactly like a reincarnation of #202997 which is

fine when using 'dpkg -i oldpkg newpkg'. However, apt splits it up into
'dpkg --unpack oldpkg newpkg', 'dpkg --configure oldpkg newpkg', and
doesn't notice that oldpkg has vanished inbetween. I wonder why it used
to work for me before. In any case, this rules out using this method for
etch. If we want to have it available for etch+1, we could either teach
apt about disappearing package or change dpkg to ignore attempts to
configure package that are not installed instead of spitting out an
error. I don't know how hard it would be to change it in apt (deity list
Cc'ed therefore), but the alternative patch to dpkg is quite simple (see
below). Alas, it changes current behaviour.

I agree with you.

Remaining on the multimedia side, if mp3 is covered by numerous patents

It is a matter destined to arise again and again until Debian will

Indeed a difficult decision because following the radical decision to

Hi Reinhard,

You are correct to point out that many software patents are not valid -
that is they cannot be enforced in court. I've heard of people
obtaining patents for ideas that have been in the public domain for decades.

The problem for the open source community is can Debian, or any other
open source producer afford to fight the big money companies in court
for the years it would take to go through court and all of the appeals,
possibly in multiple jurisdictions? Of course, it probably won't
actually come to that because those big money companies would not be
getting any money (or very little) for their massive expenditures - even
if they win, they lose.

As far as I know, none of these software patents have actually been
tested in court (I could be wrong, of course), but I think that, in most
cases all the company in question has to do is pull a TSR (a defunct
role-playing game company notorious for threatening fan sites with
lawsuits to get them taken down), and get their patented ideas removed -
if that didn't work they could go with a restraining order or actually
file the lawsuit... With no intention of following through, of course.

Bug#370027: ITP: app-install-data -- Application Installer Data Files

2006-06-02 Thread Peter Rockai
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Peter Rockai [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: app-install-data
  Version : 0.1.32
  Upstream Author : Ross Burton [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Niran Babalola
Sebasitan Heinlein [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Michael Vogt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : n/a
* License : GPL (but see below)
  Programming Lang: n/a
  Description : Application Installer Data Files

 This package contains the data files for user-oriented application
 installers. Currently used by adept-installer and gnome-app-install (the
 latter is not part of debian archive currently, though).

Notes:

The package is basically a compilation of .desktop files and icons
from Ubuntu archive. This basically reflects pretty well on Debian
archive as well. The very few inconsistencies are handled gracefully
by the application(s) using the data. These would be adept-installer
(to be uploaded shortly pending upload of this package) and
gnome-app-install (if anyone volunteers to upload it to archive, it is
currently available in ubuntu dapper).

The license is GPL because that is what the upstream authors put on
both the software and data compilation. However, the data itself is
copyrighted by wide variety of authors and covered by different
licenses. To my best knowledge, all of these are DFSG-compliant, for
most of them, the upstream source for the compilation is Debian
itself.

On the rationale for the package, the data is used to present an
user-friendly list of applications available through APT. The list can
be (and by all current applications is) structured to reflect the
desktop environment menu structure. The applications are shown with
their icons if those are available in this package or otherwise on the
system.

This package is a temporary measure until a better solution is
implemented. However, it is not likely that this happens in time for
Etch. This is why i would prefer to have app-install-data in, so that
Etch can ship with at least adept-installer (if noone steps up to
upload also gnome-app-install).

Uh, you are even more radical than me! :-)

One of the terrible effect of software patents is that nobody knows if
his program infringe some of them in some country. And, as you said, i
think it's impossible to be completely patent-free as things stand now.

But it is possible to avoid patents that are known to be valid and can
create problem. The mp3 ones are probably the most common.
Otherwise, at least a clear rule should be defined to avoid the
different treatment that trouble some packages. Since patents cover
concepts not the implementation, if mp3 bases itself on several patents,
then all codecs are covered by that patents. And so ffmpeg, mplayer,
xine and vlc are not different in that sense.

Cesare.

/var/log/btmp logs 'bad login' attempts and is read by /usr/bin/lastb (part
of the sysvinit package). It has the same format as /var/log/(utmp|wtmp).
Various packages seem to write to them (hence the need for write perms for

I presume the permissions are documented by Policy somewhere but I'm not sure

 gnat-gps-doc - The GNAT Programming System - documentation
Changes:
 gnat-gps (2.1.0-8) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * debian/10-project-creation-wizard.patch: new.
 - When creating a project file with relative path names, GPS makes
   the paths relative to its current working directory, not to the
   location of the project file. Change to that directory to fix
   that bug.
 - Do not add a second forward slash between directory name and **
   when Source_Dirs include subdirectories (cosmetic change).
 - Do not add for Executable (x.adb) use x; in package Builder
   when creating a project file because gnat 3.15p does not support
   the Executable attribute.
   * debian/rules, gps.gpr: build with debugging information (we call
 dh_strip when creating the binary package, so that's OK).
   * debian/control: update Standards-Version to 3.7.2.

Changed-By: Theppitak Karoonboonyanan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
 t1-thai-tlwg - Thai fonts in Type1 format
 ttf-thai-tlwg - Thai fonts in TrueType format
Closes: 321688 324240 332156 357869
Changes:
 thaifonts-scalable (0.4.4-3) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * transition to X11R7
 + debian/control:
   - removed build-dep on xutils
   - made t1-thai-tlwg depend on xfonts-utils  1:1.0.0
   - build-dep on debhelper = 5.0.31 for dh_installxfonts that supports
 Xorg 7 directories
 + debian/rules, debian/t1-thai-tlwg.dirs,
   debian/{t1,ttf}-thai-tlwg.install:
   - used dh_install instead of manully installing files
   - removed Type1 fonts installation in /usr/share/fonts/type1,
 as well as symlinks from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
   - installed X11 Type1 fonts in /usr/share/fonts/X11
   - moved X11 Type1 fonts.scale to /etc/X11/fonts/X11R7/Type1
   - used dh_installxfonts for t1-thai-tlwg package
 + debian/t1-thai-tlwg.scale, debian/ttf-thai-tlwg.scale:
   - created predefined fonts.scale files for both packages
 + debian/t1-thai-tlwg.post{inst,rm}:
   - removed, as the update-fonts* scripts are now automatically done with
 dh_installxfonts
   * debian/rules:
 - removed unneeded dh_strip, dh_shlibdeps, dh_link
   * debian/control:
 - conflicted with xfonts-thai-ttf, for package renaming
   * debian/ttf-thai-tlwg.config:
 - added
   * debian/lintian-overrides:
 - added lintian override for package-depends-on-an-x-font-package,
   as xfonts-utils is not a font package at all
 .
 thaifonts-scalable (0.4.4-2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New maintainer (Closes: #357869)
   * debian/control:
 - put myself as the maintainer
 - added back debconf dependency, and optionally debconf-2.0
   (Closes: #332156)
 - updated description
   * debian/ttf-thai-tlwg.docs, debian/t1-thai-tlwg.docs:
 - added NEWS and README
 - removed upstream ChangeLog
   * debian/rules:
 - removed upstream ChangeLog gzip
   * debian/copyright:
 - clarified font licenses (Closes: #321688)
   * debian/ttf-thai-tlwg.templates:
 - updated package name and config files in description
 - rewrote the description (Closes: #324240)
 .
 thaifonts-scalable (0.4.4-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release
 - Fix Loma's line gap problem with OpenOffice.org.
 - Clean up TTF fields for consistency.
 - Add enspace and emspace glyphs in fonts.
   * debian/control:
 - Optionally build-depend on xutils|ttmkfdir, for debian builds.

 version in Sarge, I'll do it once this new version is tested by real

Description:
 libgssapi-dev - header files and docs for libgssapi
 libgssapi2 - A mechanism-switch gssapi library
Closes: 359189
Changes:
 libgssapi (0.9-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release:
 -Correct declaration and implementation of gss_export_lucid_sec_context().
 This results in an interface change. The soname is updated to reflect this.
   * bump library version to libgssapi2
   * remove debian/libgssapi1.conffiles, because cdbs already adds
 etc/gssapi_mech.conf to the list of conffiles
   * debian/control:
 -added Anibal Monsalve Salazar and Steinar H. Gunderson to Uploaders:
 .
 libgssapi (0.8-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release
   * changes:
 - Memory leak: free union_name in gss_acquire_cred if it was allocated
 there.
 - Don't exit() the application if initialization fails, just fail the
 operation.
 - Add glue routines for gss_canonicalize_name and gss_export_name
 - Make first-class routines for gss_get_mic, gss_verify_mic, gss_wrap,
 and gss_unwrap
 - Clean up some clutter of unused #ifde'd code
 - Change union_name definition such that external_name is a gss_buffer_desc
 rather than gss_buffer_t. Eliminates unnecessary malloc'ing and freeing.
 .
 libgssapi (0.7-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release
   * initial upload to Debian (closes: #359189)
   * debian/watch: create
   * debian/control:
 -bump Standards-Version to 3.6.2
 -Section: libdevel for -dev
 -add cdbs to Build-Depends:
 -remove unneeded whitespace from the descriptions
 -raise Build-Depends on debhelper, now (=5.0.0)
 -add an URL to the upstream sources
   * debian/rules: use cdbs
   * debian/{*dirs,docs}: removed files that are unnecessary because of
 cdbs
   * debian/gssapi_mech.conf: removed, install from doc/
   * make copyright more readable
   * change compat to 5
