canali Debian italiani, Freenode e OFTC

2006-10-03 Thread Francesco Pedrini
Buongiorno a tutti,

questioni
relative all’utilizzo di Debian) e su [EMAIL PROTECTED] (o

come preferite :), per questioni relative allo sviluppo di Debian).

un truc dans les sources de tes modules probablement. C'est probablement un

Je n'ai pas de Makefile.26. Mais ça marchais bien en 2.6.17 donc les

Also developers are only users of packages if they have no idea of the

internals (e.g. what generating a format means, a frequent problem
when a postinst fails). And I guess the bug reports I make against
firefox or that I would make against mysql (never found one so far)
aren't or wouldn't be any better.

What might a good helpdesk need?

 delete _all_ .la files _now_.

I think we're already aiming at the removal of *.la files, at least
some maintainers are. I'm removing them from leaf packages or as soon
as the rdeps permit it, and I'm also using the dependency_libs
erasing that was introduced in libxml2 when I can't remove the *.la
files -- this renders *.la files useless but at least not harmful.

On the other hand, with your proposal, we end up keeping the *.la
files. I certainly understand that they ease static linking, but this
also means that we need to depend on all libraries down the dependency
tree (${la:Depends}) of each package to ensure that its *.la files are
functional for static linking, even with the modified dependency_libs
 line.
Since there are other ways to offer a static linking solution (adding
pkg-config files) and since not all packages use libtool, I think it
might be time to suggest people not to rely on *.la files for static
 linking.

If i'm guessing your intentions correctly, I think it's a great idea,

Thanks. :)

However, there's a very big problem. How do we avoid burn out?

Maybe we don't avoid burn out. :)

It gets *really* tiresome after a while, answering the same 'please go
read the FAQ and don't post in HTML and don't expect me to do your
 homework'-kind of questions.

I know. I've been helpdesker for too long in order for me to deny that.

So, before we try it, any ideas how to avoid that and keep us possible
 volunteers motivated?

One thing I think Debian could do, is acknowledge the helpdesk by giving
them a formal status. The helpdesk already exists! It's in the forums,
on the lists, on IRC.

But: there is no cohesion, and: no formal 'helpdesker'. I think people
would flock to Debian if they could become an official part of it by
helping other people use Debian.

So that is one thing. There are bound to be others. We could get some
other project to pay them?
;-)

Another:
Helpdeskers could update the documenation? Or post bugs and suggestions
to the DDP? Helpdeskers could recruit more helpdeskers? Fast roulation:
don't helpdesk for more than half a year?

I would also suggest some form of mentorship. Experienced helpdeskers
showing new recruits the ropes. Watching their actions and correcting
where needed. Dumping new recruits in the Deep End could be overwhelming
and demotivating.

[1] And that points out another posible task: Mediating between
non-english-speaking users and DDs. Many won't do bug reports because
 of language barriers.

Very true! Hadn't thought about that one!

Kindest regards,

Maarten

They also miss a few things a good helpdesk has:

 * Prioritization: Important issues will get addressed first. Unimportant

This is a problem, but it's generally hard to solve with volunteers,
since everybody does what pleases them most. If you care for a
particular package, that's a reason to prioritize even unattractive
tasks, but at a help desk? And to the extent that such a thing could be
done at a helpdesk, I'd suspect that it's also possible on user lists,
if we try to put some structure on them (like setting a topic,
identifying people who are specifically entitled to request a subject
change or do other meta-things).

 * Commitment to report bugs after prying the end user for all the
   information he has available.

At least in the german users' list which I often read, there's quite a
hard pressure to report bugs. And if people claim to not be able to
write english well enough, someone else often steps in.

 * Status within the official Debian hierarchy (status is a reward.
   Rewards generate motivation).

That could also be done if people fulfill their role on the lists.

 * A single point of entry for questions. Ubuntu (and others) have
official forums. We'll have an official mailbox.

So you want to force the people to contact the english helpdesk? No
localization? Or instead, where's the difference here between a
helpdesk per (active) language and a user list per (active) language?

What could be possible if Debian had an official Helpdesk Department?
  * End-Users could ask *any* question and actually get a nice answer.

You are dreaming. Or do you have funds to spend^W^Wfor corrupting the
project? ;-)

  * End-Users can report bugs, but these are first checked by helpdeskers,

they'll pass onto the developer. Questions the developer can't answer,
they'll pass onto upstream. If they do not have the time, they could ask
the Helpdesk to do this for them.

So the developer is going to see most bug reports, anyway, and we're
just have one more place for friction and creation of heat. On my
packages, the number of bad bug reports is really small. And even
these give an opportunity to learn. After all, most packages are
supposed to work for newbies, too, so their input is valuable for
improving error messages and procedures.

apt-findremovable v0.1 (initial release)

Hi,

I hope this is the right mailinglist for this.

I always had the problem, that if I removed a package via apt-get
remove, that there were still other packages that only were installed
because of that package.

I wrote a little perl-script:

NAME
apt-findremovable - tries to find out which packages might be installed
only because of a specified one.

SYNOPSIS
$ apt-findremovable package-name

DESCRIPTION
we use 'apt-cache depends' and 'apt-cache rdepends' to find out which
packages might be installed only because of the specified one.

EXAMPLE
$ ./apt-findremovable texlive
...
Only texlive depends on the following installed packages:
perl-tk
texlive-doc-en
texlive-context
texlive-metapost

The v0.1 release can downloaded via:
http://prevalent-digest.de/apt-findremovable/apt-findremovable-0.1.tar.bz2

So my questions are:

Is there a mailinglist special for apt-tools?
Does a tool like this already exist?
Would alioth.debian.org be the right place for this?

the skills to become upstream, but if a group is started I will be very
happy to join it and work in piuparts when my availability does not
suck.

Thanks for the fish!

You can mark all packages as installed automatically (this will mark
them for removal), then mark all essential and base ones as installed

your way through the rest, starting with the most obvious ones (i.e.,
mark xserver-xorg and your DE as installed manually, this will keep

RAMRUN and subdirectories in /var/run (Was: Bug#390687: lprng does not start with new initscripts RAMRUN option)

2006-10-03 Thread Craig Small
Hello,
I have received a bug report saying that lprng will not start when the
initscripts are run with the RAMRUN option. This is because RAMRUN does
not make and subdirectories.

What is RAMRUN supposed to do? Does it just make an empty tmpfs
partition? Is there now a new expectation that all and any packages
have to test for directories in /var/run (and /var/lock too I guess)
and re-create them if not found?

If there was a change, why was it not announced? Why not mention
something like this on d-d-a as it is gonig to hit a fair few packages.

I'd hate to see piuparts disappear... So if there's someone else who is
interested but wasn't planning on adopting because of the time
commitment, let's team up!

Is common sense really valid?
For example, it is common sense to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that common sense is obviously wrong.

Would be option 3 also interesting for other packages? IMHO if
we have the x-terminal-emulator feature we need to fix the call
to a common set of options between all these terminal emulators.

 Hi all,

actually, it would be interesting if the common core of options of the
x-terminal emulators would be documented somewhere, such as in a manpage
for instance. In one of my future packages, the upstream sources are
modified so that x-terminal-emulator is called instead of xterm, but I
do not know if this would break for non-mainstream alternatives...

This is documented in Debian policy:

11.8.3. Packages providing a terminal emulator
To be an `x-terminal-emulator', a program must:
* Be able to emulate a DEC VT100 terminal, or a compatible
  terminal.
* Support the command-line option `-e command', which creates a
new terminal window[1] and runs the specified command,
interpreting the entirity of the rest of the command line as a
command to pass straight to exec, in the manner that `xterm'
  does.
* Support the command-line option `-T title', which creates a new
terminal window with the window title title.

Cheers,

rsskit.framework - GNUstep framework for parsing and manipulating RSS feeds
rssreader.app - RSS reader for GNUstep
Closes: 310979 352392 352392 356538 385239
Changes:
 rssreader.app (0.6.2.dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
[ Remarks and suggestions by James Westby ]
   * Actually bump debian/compat to 5.
   * Switch to ${binary:Version}.
   * Include license header of LGPL in debian/copyright.
   * Rename README.Debian to README.Debian-source.
   * Drop the configure target from debian/rules.
 .
   * Build-depend on dpkg-dev (= 1.13.19), thanks to Daniel Leidert.
   * List explicitly which files are copyrighted by the two copyright
 holders, thanks to Margarita Manterola.
 .
 rssreader.app (0.6.2.dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release.
+ Doesn't segfault on startup anymore (Closes: #385239).
+ Fixes various hangups when adding a feed (Closes: #310979).
   * Urgency set to low instead of medium since it is a new upstream
release with a lot of changes.
   * Acknowledge NMU, thanks Luk Claes (Closes: #352392, #356538).
   * Repackage the upstream tarball, removing the RSSKit documentation; it
currently has no license. The app was renamed to Grr (Günther's RSS
Reader), but the Debian source/binary packages remain the same.
   * Split the package and build three more binary packages --
 rsskit.framework, librrskit0 and librsskit0-dev.
   * Add debian/rsskit.framework.README.Debian explaining the reason for the
 repackaging.
   * Build-depend on libgnustep-gui-dev, instead of libgnustep-gui0.10-dev.
   * Upgrade to debhelper v5, adjust the build-dependancy accordingly and bump
 debian/compat.
   * Pass -LRSSKit/shared_obj to the linker in order to find the shared
libs, thanks to Damyan Ivanov for the hint.
   * Append messages=yes to $(MAKE) in order to track curious build
 failures on the autobuilders.
   * Rework the long description to fix a lintian warning, also mention
the new name and fix the Homepage.
   * Escape Gürkan's and upstream author's names in the manpage to fix a
lintian warning; rename it to Grr.1 and substitute the name accordingly.
   * Remove debian/dirs and debian/docs, split the latter into
 $binary_package.docs.
   * Include /usr/share/GNUstep/debian/config.mk in debian/rules.
   * Move Resources to /usr/share/GNUstep/Grr.app and make a compatibility
 symlink.
   * Replace the symlynk to /usr/bin/gnustep-app-wrapper with
 $(GS_SYSTEM_ROOT)/Makefiles/gnustep-app-wrapper, the former will
be removed after the release of Etch.
   * Add icon to debian/menu and a hint as well. Build-depend on
imagemagick for the conversion to .xpm format.
   * [debian/copyright]: Clarify that the license is GPLv2 only,
unfortunately, and change the link to point to it. Add the standard
blurb as well. List the FSF as additional copyright holder and
include a notice about RSSKit/GNUmakefile, which appears to be under
LGPL (probably a yanking mistake upstream).
   * Add myself to Uploaders: as agreed with the maintainer.
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.7.2, no changes needed.
 .
 rssreader.app (0.2.2-1.1) unstable; urgency=high
 .
   * Non-maintainer upload.
   * Update libgnustep-gui build-dep (Closes: #352392).
   * Use gsdh_gnustep.

   * users need to set SOAP_USE_PROXY=on to use HTTP_PROXY for SOAP.
Document it. A pretty stupid way to handle security hole, but that's
 life.
SOAP_USE_PROXY is set if apt.conf has the proxy configuration.
   - Bug fix: apt-listbugs: Reports undefined variable and fails
