Splashy is indeed already using that functionality. It installs a file
/etc/lsb-base-logging.sh, which is their to override functions from the

log_end_msg made from init-scripts. That way we don't need change the
initscripts or install extra scripts, we get out info from all scripts
that use the LSB library.

LDAP breaks kcheckpass when not setuid root (#298148)

2007-05-04 Thread Christoph Haas
Dear list...

someone (curse you, Matthijs) motivated me to dump NIS in favor of LDAP
for user accounts on my small home net. Good thing I did it during my
vacation because it's not as trivial as I hoped.

I'm unhappy with the outcome of the bug #298148 (kdebase-bin: kcheckpass
needs setuid bit for ldap authentication). When using libnss-ldap and
libpam-ldap (optionally) people who lock their screen in KDE will not be
able to unlock the screen and may (like me) lose data because they
finally give up and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. :( It turned out that unlocking
the screen currently only works if the /usr/bin/kcheckpass binary is
made setuid root. I don't like to just reopen that bug but IMO users
should be made aware of that problem. There are several possible ways:

- generally setting it setuid root by default
(security risk but a solution without user interaction)
- a debconf question of kdebase-bin setting the binary setuid root
(does not help if KDE is installed and users later decide to use LDAP
because the question doesn't get asked)
- a debconf warning in libnss-ldap
(a good place IMO although it's not the fault of libnss-ldap)
- doing nothing (current state)
(wastes users' time and may eventually make them give up with LDAP
  or KDE)

This problem shouldn't be too uncommon because KDE and LDAP sounds to me
like it could be an organisations standard desktop client.

By the way: having nscd installed gives different error messages but
the problem is the same.

Cheers
 Christoph

This sounds like you have set up LDAP authentication incorrectly, as I
am able to lock the screen with LDAP authentication. Correctly set
up, pam-ldap should do authentication by binding to the LDAP server
over SSL, and this do not require any special privileges.

This is the configuration I use:

  # egrep -v '^#|^$' /etc/pam.d/common-auth /etc/pam_ldap.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf
  /etc/pam.d/common-auth:auth optionalpam_group.so
  /etc/pam.d/common-auth:auth sufficient pam_unix.so shadow

  /etc/pam.d/common-auth:auth requiredpam_ldap.so use_first_pass
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:host ldap.uio.no
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:base cn=users,cn=system,dc=uio,dc=no
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:ldap_version 3
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:pam_password crypt
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:ssl start_tls
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:tls_cacertfile /etc/w3_cacert.pem
  /etc/pam_ldap.conf:tls_checkpeer yes
  #

The LDAP server is set up to only allow binding using passwords over
128-bit encrytped SSL, to make sure the password isn't send in clear
text.

This system is compatible with the one we use in Debian Edu.

Okay, so libpam-ldap is mandatory in that case? Good to know. Most of
the documentation I found said that only libnss-ldap is needed for login
and libpam-ldap's only use is for changing the password over LDAP.

However whether it's SSL or not shouldn't matter really since this is
a local kcheckpass that needs to access the pam/nss configuration on the

Where did you find this documented? I admit I'm no PAM guru at all.
In theory it's simple but in practice PAM has never obeyed my orders.
In /usr/share/doc/libpam-ldap/examples/ the example pam.d files have
pam_ldap.so mentioned in every file which is surely worse than using
common-auth.

I just tried your pam.d/common-auth configuration and then indeed
kcheckpass works without running setuid root. A miracle! :)

   /etc/pam_ldap.conf:host ldap.uio.no
   /etc/pam_ldap.conf:base cn=users,cn=system,dc=uio,dc=no

   /etc/pam_ldap.conf:tls_cacertfile /etc/w3_cacert.pem
   /etc/pam_ldap.conf:tls_checkpeer yes

You don't need a rootbinddn here? I tried to remove it but couldn't
login as a user any more.

The LDAP server is set up to only allow binding using passwords over
128-bit encrytped SSL, to make sure the password isn't send in clear
 text.

Since the password should be either MD5 or Crypt (what I use) the
password should not go over the line in cleartext anyway. However it may
be cracked with john probably when sniffed on the net.

Thanks in advance for the hints. I'm taking notes already to document
this better.

please post a link as soon as you have some documentation online. I'd
think that a wiki would be a good place for it. pam-ldap/libnss-ldap is
missing a good documentation definitely.

Re: LDAP breaks kcheckpass when not setuid root (#298148)

2007-05-04 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

[Christoph Haas]
Okay, so libpam-ldap is mandatory in that case? Good to know. Most
of the documentation I found said that only libnss-ldap is needed
for login and libpam-ldap's only use is for changing the password
 over LDAP.

Yes, pam is needed to do proper authentication (password checking),
and nss is needed to find information about users and groups. Yes,
you can use nss to find password hashes and authenticate locally after
fetching the hash using LDAP, but it is a very bad idea, as you really
want to avoid password hashes from leaving your LDAP server.

However whether it's SSL or not shouldn't matter really since this
is a local kcheckpass that needs to access the pam/nss configuration
on the local machine. But generally SSL is surely preferred.

I do not understand your comment.

pam-ldap send the password to the LDAP server, and the LDAP server
accept or deny the connection. If this connection isn't done using
SSL (or TLS), the password is sent in clear text over the net to the
LDAP server. You do not want that, so you want to make sure pam-ldap
uses SSL or TLS.

nss-ldap on the other hand do not send any passwords, it only fetches
information from the LDAP server, and it does it fairly often, so you
do not want the overhead of encryption there, and you also want to
make sure nscd is running to cache any search results to reduce the
amount of LDAP trafic needed.

Where did you find this documented? I admit I'm no PAM guru at all.
In theory it's simple but in practice PAM has never obeyed my
orders. In /usr/share/doc/libpam-ldap/examples/ the example pam.d
files have pam_ldap.so mentioned in every file which is surely worse
 than using common-auth.

Not sure. It is the default configuration in Debian Edu.

I just tried your pam.d/common-auth configuration and then indeed
kcheckpass works without running setuid root. A miracle! :)

:)

You don't need a rootbinddn here? I tried to remove it but couldn't
login as a user any more.

No. It is only needed if you want your root user to be able to update
the LDAP database as a privileged user. Normally, you do not want
this. The users can be allowed to change their own password if the
LDAP server give them write access to their own LDAP entry, and there
is no need for the rootbinddn for this.

Since the password should be either MD5 or Crypt (what I use) the
password should not go over the line in cleartext anyway. However it
may be cracked with john probably when sniffed on the net.

Actually, you got it backwards, as explained above. pam-ldap isn't
using the password hash to check the password. It is passing the
password over to the LDAP server (using an LDAP bind), and letting the
LDAP server decide if the password is correct or not.

Friendly,

Nah, what you really want is to avoid password hashes *entering* your LDAP

You may not want encryption, but almost anywhere that you would care about
encryption to protect the privacy of your passwords you should also care
about cryptographic signing ensuring the integrity of the NSS data being
sent to you by the server, to protect against network MITM attacks. The
easiest way to accomplish this is to use SSL for all your LDAP connections.

just providing the g95 compiler but not providing sets of libraries that

I am pretty sure that g95 doesn't use the same ABI as gfortran. However, I
believe that it does use the g77 ABI. I would say that we should start
thinking about a Fortran policy. I would say that Debian's default compiler
for Fortran should be gfortran from the GCC.

Closes: 420390 420490 421079 421620
Changes:
 texlive-base (2007-5) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * create tetex-base package to deal with postrm bugginess of tetex-base
(3.0) and removal of config files of TeX Live. This closes several RC
bugs, but upgrades from stable still can show these bugs in the case
that tetex-base is purged at dist-upgrade time. (Closes: #420490,
 #420390) [np]
   * All the tetex-base package does is remove and deregister with ucf the
file /etc/texmf/language.d/10tetex.cnf in its postinst script. [fk]
   * This will also lower the severity of bugs of the type Uninstallable:
Depends on tetex-base. These bugs are still important, though,
because tetex-base does not provide any functionality and will vanish
 after lenny. [fk]
   * blacklist intermediate files in mathpazo doc (Closes: #421620)
   * backport koma-script r288 to fix the use of \usekomafont in all
 koma-script classes (Closes: #421079)
