I suggest "C-like compiler with improved security checks"

"dialect" is faily trivial language for me, which is IMHO not suitable
for a package description.

Bug#465813: ITP: cyclone -- Safe dialect of C

2008-02-14 Thread François-Denis Gonthier
Package: wnpp
Owner: François-Denis Gonthier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: cyclone
  Version : 1.0/CVS
  Upstream Author : Dan Grossman, Trevor Jim, Greg Morrisett et al.
* URL or Web page : http://cyclone.thelanguage.org
* License : GPL (+ BSD alike for some files)
  Description : Safe dialect of C

Cyclone is a compiler for a language close to the C language. It adds
several feature to improve the safety on the C language. Such features
include:

- pattern matching,
- algebraic datatypes
- exceptions
- region-based memory management
- optional garbage collection.

One of cyclone aims is to produce programs that are more secure than C
programs by eliminating buffers overflows, double free bugs, dangling
pointers access, etc.

For Cyclone-l readers, this is a "Intent To Package" for the Debian
GNU/Linux distribution. It is meant to say that there is somebody
working on packaging a particular software for the distribution.

If you have any comments or questions, I'll be happy to answer.

This package installs http-proxy-tunnel. Http-proxy-tunnel creates

Hi all,

This is a very good idea, but the reason why source-only uploads are not
allowed is that there are concerns that if the binary package is not
used for real, the quality of the source package will drop. Within this
hypothesis, there is no incentive for the laxist developper to use the
valuable feedback that you propose.

When he communicated about source-only uploads in his email of January
2007, James Troup wrote:

  "This is not something I personally think is a good idea but
  I won't stand in the way of consensus of the Release Managers and the
  developer community as a whole."

http://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Therefore, to move forward, It seems that the opinion of the release
managers is needed.

The other concern of James Troup is that the i386 buildd may not keep
up. So I guess that another piece of the puzzle is in the hand of the
i386 buildd maintainers, the release team, the i386 porters, and the
system administration team.

Then, because "a consensus between the Release Managers and the
developer community as a whole" has been required, a GR will be needed.
Since it is a necessary step, the writing of it may be a useful tool to
clarify arguments before presenting them to the persons in charge ?

Have a nice day,

I guess you mean "random length MAC padding". This change has
nothing to do with that. They might add that at some point, and
I doubt it's going to compile time option changing the ABI.

This change is about:
  *) Add initial support for TLS extensions, specifically for the server_name
 extension so far. The SSL_SESSION, SSL_CTX, and SSL data structures now
 have new members for a host name. The SSL data structure has an
 additional member SSL_CTX *initial_ctx so that new sessions can be
 stored in that context to allow for session resumption, even after the
 SSL has been switched to a new SSL_CTX in reaction to a client's
 server_name extension.

 New functions (subject to change):

 SSL_get_servername()
 SSL_get_servername_type()
 SSL_set_SSL_CTX()

 New CTRL codes and macros (subject to change):

 SSL_CTRL_SET_TLSEXT_SERVERNAME_CB
 - SSL_CTX_set_tlsext_servername_callback()
 SSL_CTRL_SET_TLSEXT_SERVERNAME_ARG
  - SSL_CTX_set_tlsext_servername_arg()
 SSL_CTRL_SET_TLSEXT_HOSTNAME   - SSL_set_tlsext_host_name()

 openssl s_client has a new '-servername ...' option.

 openssl s_server has new options '-servername_host ...', '-cert2 ...',
 '-key2 ...', '-servername_fatal' (subject to change). This allows
 testing the HostName extension for a specific single host name ('-cert'
 and '-key' remain fallbacks for handshakes without HostName
 negotiation). If the unrecogninzed_name alert has to be sent, this by
 default is a warning; it becomes fatal with the '-servername_fatal'
 option.

Anyway, it's been uploaded to unstable now.

Why a recommends? In order to satisfy the spirit of policy ("every

I thought that tag in lintian already had a note that you should add an
override if the man pages are shipped in a different package on which this
package has a dependency. Apparently I was just imagining things.

Such a note will be present in the next release.

Sorry, I don't understand you here.
Having the passwords in the repository might make them vulnerable, especially
if it's an off-site backup.

So per default they get stripped out.

In what way could that be *more* unsecure? I don't make the password fields
in /etc/g?shadow empty, if it's that what you mean.

Not manually - just at user-defined points in time (eg. "added a new user"),
or when doing updates.

I know, I looked at that ;-)

I'd like to try doing a commit for each package - but I don't find the link
anymore where I saw how that could be done. Something about low-memory
systems, IIRC.

I'd like to do a non-empty commit after each package, and a final (possibly
empty) commit after the apt-get run.

I know that git stores the data compressed, which gives it an advantage.

At the time I wrote FSVS there've been several ways to store complete binary
trees in some versioning system; but they either couldn't do meta-data, or
had to jump through some loops to dump the meta-data into a file, which could
then be stored normally -- like etckeeper.
Doing that for several hundred thousand inodes is not fast - that's why I put
meta-data versioning in FSVS directly.

Well, it's just one more way to do things :-)

Regards,

Phil

If the three tarballs are released in sync, it may be possible to repack all
three as one source tarball for debian.

Hi

Firstly, this kind of question would be better suited in the
debian-mentors list.

Are they really distributed in three separate upstream tarballs? If they
are, perhaps it would be better to generate a single tarball, if not,
there's no need to split it. A single tarball can - and most do -
generate many separate debs. Take a look at the New Maintainer Guide[0]
or get the sources of some existing packages to get the hang of it.

This should solve the manpage issue.

Cheers

My point-of-view is that it's fine IF the package which contains the

case, you may write a lintian override.

2008-02-14 Thread Harshula
Hi,

re: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s12.1
---
Each program, utility, and function should have an associated manual
page included in the same package. It is suggested that all
configuration files also have a manual page included as well. Manual
pages for protocols and other auxiliary things are optional.

If no manual page is available, this is considered as a bug and should
be reported to the Debian Bug Tracking System (the maintainer of the
package is allowed to write this bug report themselves, if they so
desire). Do not close the bug report until a proper man page is
available.[80]
---

Here's the example:

1) a.tar.gz -> a.deb
2) b.tar.gz -> b.deb
3) c.tar.gz -> c.deb

c.tar.gz contains only documentation, including man pages for
binaries/scripts in a.tar.gz and b.tar.gz.

Since c.deb contains all the man pages, running lintian on a.deb results
in:
---
W: m17n-db: binary-without-manpage usr/bin/m17n-db
N:
N:   Each binary in /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /bin, /sbin or /usr/games
should
N:   have a manual page
N:
N: Note, that though the `man' program has the capability to check for
N: several program names in the NAMES section, each of these programs
N: should have its own manual page (a symbolic link to the appropriate
N: manual page is sufficient) because other manual page viewers such
as
N: xman or tkman don't support this.
N:
N: Refer to Policy Manual, section 12.1 for details.
N:
---

What is the recommended way to deal with this scenario?

cya,
#

Maybe e.g. "make Tux the penguin slide down mountains and collect fishes"?
(Tags: game::arcade, interface::3d, and perhaps game::sport:racing should
apply, among others.)

I see this happening all around... (users compiling their own kernels cause
they have to and stop tracking debian kernels)

Please make the old stack available.

Even if the package is rebuilt, the uploaded debs are not useless.
You may debdiff them and eventually informe the developer that:
- his build environment is corrupted (or the buildd's one)
- his package build process is installation sensitive (behaves
  differently on a different installation).

Cheers

 Should we have a new "default-flags" package or something which would
 be the place where these flags are set? Perhaps queryable with:
get-default-flags --gcc
get-default-flags --ld
etc.

Does this include MAC Padding? If so, expect some interoperability
issues with symbian-based mobile devices.

Hmm, I doubt that dpkg-dev should be the place to keep track of that.
I mean, that probably depends on the version of gcc/g++/whatever used,
so it's quite meaningless to make it dependent on the version of
dpkg-dev you use.

"At least"? You have further improvements? Sounds "3D racing game
featuring Tux, the Linux penguin" better for you?

(Hmm... why did I copy the long description from ppracer, but not the
synopsis?)

Now that you mention it... allthough it is in theorie possible to play
this game without 3D acceleration, it is practically impossible. How
does: "3D acceleration is required or this game will run quite slowly."
sound to you?

I don't. I'm just questioning the (apparent) assertion that the
presence or lack of "CodeBlocks" is "critical" to those who "appreciate
using Debian as a development platform". Surely 99% of people who do
development on Debian haven't even _heard_ of CodeBlocks.

ppracer is upstream dead. Extreme Tuxracer is a fork from a
beta-version of ppracer, which never made it stable. So it is a
replacement, but since it seems to have quite higher hardware
requirements, I consider having both in Lenny and removing ppracer after
the Lenny release; (ppracer is in good shape and allthough unmaintained
upstream no security risc).

Positive aspect: This branch of extreme tuxracer seems to use the same
format for courses as ppracer does, so planetpenguin-racer-extras might
be usable for extreme tuxracer as well.
