I find that a bit too much for a complete fork. Couldn't this be
implemented via a plugin?

my understanding is that this is a 'protest' fork made to add a feature
that the upstream did not want(the resizing). So as long as the upstream
resists, it should survive.

I too have concern that this fork will not last, but they are receptive

fork is successful.

Good point. I was thinking about that but was not sure how long to wait.
Any recommendation ?

It seems they are adding things, They already replaced the MSN plugin:

You can't assume that buildds have deb-src lines or even network
connectivity.

But there are 2 things you can do:

1) Become a comaintainer of r-base and add the JIT patches to the
package. You would then build r-base and r-base-jit (for example) from
the same source.

2) You can do is convince the r-base maintainer to create an
r-base-source.deb containing the source and Build-Depend on that.

Wouldn't it be possible to configure the mail server to filter the mail
based on the header content? That is,

 * Is it spam? => Yes => Now do the following:

   1. If mail from a mailing list or precedence Bulk or has List-Id in
headers, discard it
   2. Reject with 5xx - Spam

This is kind of what I have setup postfix to do except I filter based on
source IP - could be easier to setup in master's case. If mail is from a
known mailing list server (eg. debian, sourceforge), it gets accepted
and processed in a post queue filter with spam being dropped. If mail is
not from a known mailing list server, it goes to default configuration
which does pre-queue filtering where spam is rejected with 5xx SMTP
level message.

I'm sure it would be possible to set it up based on the existence of
Priority: Bulk or List-Id: headers.

The only side effect is sometimes the number of connections are more
than the server can filter, but that is not generally a significant
problem. It just means the connection is delayed for a few minutes.

When NMUing a native package, which problem would it add to upload a
source package with a single .tar.gz file? Why can't you simply use
debdiff to compare the two source packages if needed?

My understanding is that the buildds don't necessarily have apt-src lines
in their sources.list files, so apart from any other concerns, I don't
think this will actually work.

Can I use 'apt-get source' from debian/rules ?

2008-05-04 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

I have packaged the Ra extension for just-in-time compilation to GNU R (see
ITP #479233 for details). It comes as a tarball to be installed on top of
the GNU R sources.

So I created a new hybird tarball of the two sources. Not elegant as it
creates a 16mb tarball containing a copy of GNU R's 16mb tarball when we'd
just need the 372kb of 'new' Ra files.

As an alternative, could I just start from Ra source, and then in
debian/rules obtain r-base's orig.tar.gz, untar it and then apply the Ra
sources to it? Or is that too fragile?

Comments, anyone?

Dirk

Yes, I've been seeing the same thing. It's usually just an irritation,
but I guess some day I'll hit a threshold and get unsubscribed from a
bunch of lists.

It would be nice if the mail indicated what that threshold is, so that
we know whether this is an immediate cause for concern. The FAQ merely
says "it depends" (with some details, but not enough to do an accurate
check), so perhaps the program that generates the mail is in a better
position to say.

The problem is that the filtering is differential; master.debian.org
should be reconfigured to either just accept these messages from
lists, or discard them.

As listmaster has nothing to do with the mail configuration on master,
there's not much listmaster can do about it. Our spam rules are
publicly available here:

Bug#479397: RFA: gutenprint -- printer drivers for CUPS

2008-05-04 Thread Roger Leigh
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the gutenprint package. I no longer have time
to maintain it, and it deserves to be maintained to a better standard
than I can currently manage. Not only am I short of time, but I no
longer have an inkjet printer for testing and bug fixing.

Gutenprint is used for printing on EPSON, Canon, Olympus, and some HP
and other makes of printer via CUPS, LPRng etc.. It is an important
part of the printing infrastructure in Debian. There is a new upstream
release due out in the next week or so (5.2.0). Upstream is very
friendly. The package isn't too complex, though there are quite a few
binary packages. What it really needs is proper testing and bugs being
pushed upstream.

I'll continue to be available to co-maintain if you like, and I do know
a fair bit about its internals (I am, albeit currently inactive, an
upstream developer as well). I will also be orphaning ijs, one of
gutenprint's build dependencies.

Thanks,
Roger

The package description is:
This package includes a CUPS driver based on Gutenprint.
 .
The CUPS drivers contain all of the files needed to support
photo-quality printing on any printer supported by Gutenprint. You
can find out more about the Common UNIX Printing System ("CUPS"), an
IPP-based printing system for UNIX/Linux, at:
 .
   http://www.cups.org
 .
This is Gutenprint version 5.0.2, a stable release
 in the 5.0 series.
 .
Gutenprint is the print facility for the GIMP, and in addition a
suite of drivers that may be used with common UNIX spooling systems
using GhostScript or CUPS. These drivers provide printing quality
for UNIX/Linux on a par with proprietary vendor-supplied drivers in
many cases, and can be used for many of the most demanding printing
tasks. Gutenprint was formerly known as Gimp-Print.

Well, we run into the same thing with the Debian Perl Group. For
instance, take the CPAN module Relative.pm. Should the source package
be called relative? That would be far too generic. The binary package
is definitely called librelative-perl. But then, so is the source
package. Having a different name from upstream has never been a
problem. In fact, for something like language libraries, especially
when they originate from some sort of common language repository like
CPAN or CRAN or whatever if OCaml has something similar, it is probably
good to have some sort of common naming scheme.

-Roberto

Is master unsuitable to receive mail from lists.debian.org?

2008-05-04 Thread Santiago Vila
Hello.

I tried to contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] about this without success,
so this time I will Cc: debian-devel, as it would be extremely strange
that I'm the only person with this problem.

Executive summary: master.debian.org, where I receive debian email,
has stronger spam filtering than lists.debian.org, as master seems to
use some kind of "content filtering". As a result, some spam messages
distributed by lists.debian.org are rejected by master.debian.org.

This is insane! Please do agree on a set of filtering rules for master
and lists.debian.org which do not make lists.debian.org to send
messages to master that master will then reject.

Thanks.

Subject: lists.debian.org has received bounces from you

Dear subscriber,

We've encountered some problems while sending listmail to your
emailaddress [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the last seven days we've seen bounces for the following list:
* debian-devel

(The link above points to a copy of the latest bounce
and will be valid for seven days.)

If those bounces pass a certain threshold, our bounce-detection will
forcibly remove your subscription.

If you are using 'Before-Queue Content filtering' and you think that this
mail is wrong, you should whitelist liszt.debian.org from Content filtering.

For more information see http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/ListMaster/FAQ

You are welcome to contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you think this
message was sent in error.

Sincerely,
The Listmaster Team

Fine by me. Thanks.

Oops, sorry, I did mess up with the recipients in order to add back the
bug report to them (and I'm doing it also now), in order to keep track
in the bug log of this discussion. I overlooked that you were there also
personally.

Ack, I'll rename it to "ocaml-res" (source name).

Cheers.

Please follow http://www.debian.org/MailingLists#codeofconduct>
and avoid sending individual copies of messages also sent to the
lists, since I haven't asked for that.

Regardless, 'res' is an overly general name. The package should be
more specific to the fact that it's an OCaml library. The time to
choose an appropriate name is now rather than later.
