Launching and l10n NMU campaign for the squeeze release cycle

2009-08-22 Thread Christian Perrier
Despite the current incertainties about the planned release date, I
think it is now time to launch the l10n NMU campaign for squeeze.

The key page for this is
http://i18n.debian.net/debian-l10n/l10n-nmu/nmu_bypackage.html

It lists packages that have at least one l10n bug report opened and
ranks them with a fairly complicated notation system meant to both
take into account the number of l10n bugs and their age.

So, roughly speaking, I'll start from the top of the page and then go
down.

The process is roughly the following:

- warn the maintainer (through the @packages.d.o address) about my
intent to build an NMU of the package, fixing all l10n bug reports

- wait for a few days (4 with the current setup: that may sound low,
but the process becomes fairly hairy to handle with longer delays)

- issue a call for translation updates (of course after taking care to
use the pending l10n bug reports)

- wait for 6 days

- prepare the NMU and send the diff to the maintainer (copying it to
  the oldest l10n bug report)

- upload to DELAYED/2-day

Of course, at any time of the process, things may be negotiated with
the maintainer, and adapted to his|her work process...including fully
abandoning the NMU intent..:-)

This time, I'll look closer at packages I intend to NMU. Probably
those that are at the top of the list might be poorly maintained
packages, or even abandoned ones. For the last NMU campaigns, I took
care of even those packages, but, this time, I might consider asking
for the package removal if it appears too buggy, useless, outdated, or
whatever else.

Of course, comments about this process are very much welcomed!

This libary serves as an advanced lexer for (GNU) makefiles. It
loselessly parses makefiles as "documents". The results are data
structures similar to DOM trees, holding every single bit of the
information in the original input files, including white spaces,
blank lines and makefile comments, so it's possible to reproduce
the original makefiles from the DOM trees. In addition, each node
of the DOM trees is modifiable and so is the whole tree.

Not a bad idea. Please do share the ones were you did not get any
maintainer response with the MIA Team even if you proceed with the NMU
so they can look into the specific reasons why the maintainer seems to
be inactive.

Also note that there is a process for tracking possible orphaning or
removal of a package by the QA Team which is called bapase [1].

Re: ITP: liblocale-us-perl -- Module for United States state identification

2009-08-22 Thread Alastair McKinstry

Hi,

A larger version of this idea exists in the iso-codes package, with
the iso-code subdivision

codes for all countries, see /usr/share/xml/iso-codes/iso_3166-2.xml

For each US state it has the 2nd-level code , so US-MI is Michigan,
for example.

Similar 2nd-level codes exist for each country, so FR-75 is the French
Department of Paris,

IE-D is Dublin, Ireland, and GB-ESX is the English county of Essex.

The iso-codes package provides translations for these lists.

Perhaps generalizing this module might be a good idea ?

Alastair

Is a package really needed for something this simple?

It might be obvious to a US native, but it's hardly simple or obvious
to those of us outside America.

MI is a prime example, does it refer to Michigan, Missouri,
Mississippi or Minesota? The first two letters match all four.

If you come across this every day you probably know the answer, but I
just had to look it up again (Michigan) despite being caught out by
this just the other week!

udev 146 in experimental

2009-08-22 Thread Marco d'Itri
I uploaded to experimental[1] udev 146, considering the major changes I
recommend extended testing by anybody who can, especially d-i
developers.
Current status: "installs and boots in a kvm image".

It will make mdadm uninstallable until it will be fixed to use blkid.

udev now will use the ConsoleKit database to set ACLs on devices, this
will allow removing all non-standard groups from the rules (#516149).
I would appreciate some words from the ConsoleKit maintainer about how
it works and what we should expect from it in the future.
I implemented a little hack to prevent udev from depending on glib,
which would have added 2 MB to the base system.

BTW, I would still appreciate help in either fixing or declaring
impossible to fix #444980 "udev not restarted after exiting runlevel 1".

(146-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * New upstream release.
+ vol_id and libvolume_id have been removed. (Closes: #500883, #534765)
  Breaks: dmsetup (<< 2.02.51-1), mdadm (<< 3.0-3)
+ Introduced libgudev-1.0.
+ Finally removed the udevinfo compatibility symlink.
+ Applies ACLs on /dev nodes if ConsoleKit is active.
  * Added patch test_for_glib: do not run udev-acl unless glib is
  * installed.
  * Stop copying /etc/udev/rules.d/ in the initramfs.
  * Renamed some rules files for uniformity with other distributions:
50-udev.rules => 50-udev-default.rules,
95-late.rules => 95-udev-late.rules.

Registry for cache directories (to save backup space)

2009-08-22 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

while watching rsnapshot doing a backup of my laptop, I thought: Wouldn't it
be fine, to have a registry of cache directories that shouldn't be backed up?

While you can exclude /var/cache, there are still many GB of data in
~/.mozilla/firefox/.../Cache
~/.strigi
~/.thumbnails
~/.cddb
~/.cache (Who is that?)
~/.googleearth

So a debian package could register all the places, where it puts caches and a
system administrator could use this registry to speed up backups and save
bandwidth and storage.

Debian is the wrong place to do that, the FreeDesktop group and
upstreams is the best place to do that.

Looks like there was discussion about this as far back as 2004:

Probably just fixing all apps to use the XDG Base Directory spec and

I've done a quick basic installation test on i386 (in VirtualBox). Nothing
fancy. I've not seen any issues in the D-I environment.

For the /target system the regular unstable version of udev was used.

FreeDesktop is equally wrong, as not all applications are desktop
applications (a point that is often forgotten, nowadays). The right
place would be the FHS.

ConsoleKit only provides ACLs for logged-in users, which doesn't cover the

mailing list as well as the title (and usually the severity) of the bug
