 Hi,

in the past months I've tryied without success to contact Christian
Meder (ch...@absolutegiganten.org), the maintainer of the aegis package,
 offering my help.

As a Debian and Aegis user I'm a bit worried of state of the aegis
 package.

He uploaded 4.24-1 (2008-04-20) and next packaging updates until 4.24-5
(2008-12-05) in the meantime the upstream team has done one stable
updates (4.24.1 released 2008-09-24). Later (2009-06-29) the upstream
team has released another stable release (4.24.2).

 thanks

Hi Walter,

sorry for being unresponsive. I had a pretty intense 2009 at work and
was mostly ignoring non-urgent private emails. Sorry again.

Now life has slowed down a bit and I intend to return to my aegis
duties. Thank you for preparing the updated Debian package I'll check it
and upload it afterwards.

Greetings,

Christian

Re: Is Christian Meder MIA?

2008-02-12 Thread Christian Meder
Hi Walter,

sorry for not answering last year.

I'm not completely MIA just terribly slow and very very low profile. I
still intend to update the Debian aegis package.

Sorry again for being unresponsive,

Christian

 Hi,

in the past months I've tryied to contact Christian Meder
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) without success. He is the maintainer of
 the aegis packages.

His last upload for aegis is dated 2006-05-14 and in the meantime the
upstream team has done two stable updates and the release of the next
major version is imminent, so I'm a bit worried of state of the
 aegis packages in Debian.

 thanks

Description : VDR Plugin that provides an extended schedules menu

vdr-plugin-epgsearch can be used as a replacement for the default schedules
menu entry. It looks like the standard schedules menu, but adds some
 additional functions:
 .
  - Commands for EPG entries with 5 built-in commands like 'show repeats',
'create search'. One can add own commands for other needs, like adding a
VDRAdmin auto-timer.
 .
  - Add up to 4 user-defined times to 'now' and 'next' and an optional
favorites menu
 .
  - Searching the EPG: Create reusable queries, which can also be used as
'search timers'.
 .
  - Search timers: Search for broadcasts in the background and add a timer
timer if one matches (similar to VDRAdmin's auto-timers) or simply
make an announcement about it via OSD
 .
  - Avoid double recordings of the same event
* timer preview
* recognition of broken recordings
* fuzzy event comparison
 .
  - Progress bar in 'What's on now' and 'What's on next'
 .
  - Shift the time displayed by key press, e.g. 'What's on now' + 30 minutes
 .
  - Start menu can be setup between 'Schedule' or 'What's on now'
 .
  - background check for timer conflicts with a timer conflict manager
 .
  - detailed EPG menu (summary) allows jumping to the next/previous event
 .
  - support for extended EPG info for search timers
 .
  - extension of the timer edit menu with a directory item, user defined
weekday selection and a subtitle completion.
 .
  - Timer conflict check, informs you over the OSD about conflicts
 .
  - Timer conflict menu, show detailed information about the conflicts and
let you resolve them
 .
  - Email notifications about search timer updates and timer conflicts

Cool idea. But would it help Debian except of being a big social developer
event ?

Apart from the organizational problems it would only make sense if there's
a track of technical talks about mostly internal stuff (debhelper,
wannabuild, HPML project, ports status, policy questions, etc.).

I believe if well organized and highly technical it would be very useful.

I'm amenable to using 'profile-*' naming. Martin?

Actually I think your SGML package should be named task-* to keep it
similar to the boot-floppies naming convention:
task-* are groupings of packages which together build an environment
to accomplish a certain task (e.g. Webserving, writing SGML documents,
writing (La)TeX documents, ...)
profile-* are groupings of tasks which together build an environment
for a specific user group (e.g. scientist, home user, admin,
graphic artist, musician, ...)

Otherwise I propose this FAQ entry:

Q.: Why are the profiles named metapkg in the packaging system after
  initial installation ?
A.: Uh, oh, it's just that we wanted to give Debian a more philosophical
  touch.

 Ok, so sue me,
 I'm was a philosophy major. ;)

 Uber-packages ? (just kidding)

Actually we need (functional) german font support in dpkg before we can
call them Ueber-package (german umlaut u) ;-)

Well what is the problem with this? I don't see any offence in getting a

may forget to fix bugs. Take a look at the ppp-package and how many open
bugs there have been. The maintainer hadn't fixed them and so I helped
him. (Sorry Phil, but this is a good example and No, I don't want to
praise me with this). Or have you taken a look at the list on
http://master.debian.org/~ajt/bugsbyage.txt? Have you seen how many open
old bugs we got? How do you think we get this fixed without reminding
the developers of their open bugs?

I think you miss the point. Nobody's arguing that we shouldn't keep a
public list of open old bugs. For interested developers it makes
sense to do some qa after checking such a list.

The point is that the diligent maintainer is well aware of his/her
open old bug reports and usually has some valid reasons to leave the
bug report open. Example: I've got an open old bug report that flying
(a X11 pool game) doesn't support 16/24 bit displays. The upstream
maintainer doesn't work on flying anymore and I don't have the
expertise to add the feature. So I'm well aware of the bug but there's
no easy way out (anybody feels like hacking Xlib code ?). For sure
there's _no_ need to remind me of this bug every month or so.

I'm neither Johnnie nor Eric but I think the basic tools on sparc are

Our disks don't work on all models... although our netboot is better.

I will work on the boot-floppies soonish

AFAICS, there are still serious bugs in X - and also the 2.0 series kernels
don't work well on SS2s, at least - but the 2.1 series kernels don't work at
 all with our bash.

I know there are bugs left. But we get probably 4 to 6 weeks to fix at
least some of them.

  * if there's a stabilized snapshot newbies will get (hopefully) a
softer introduction in the wonders of the Linux-Sparc/Powerpc/Arm/...
 world

I see your argument. I'm worried that we might be perceived as giving the
message that debian-sparc is ready for primetime, which, alas, it is not..

Right. I would like to see a freeze on Sparc the result of which we should
call _development_ snapshot instead of release to distinguish them.

Remember the article of Alan Cox recently on slashdot.

* Release early to get other people jump on the wagon.

The ports tend to drag along because newbies don't know where to start.

I don't think sparc is ready to go, though Johnnie or Eric may see it
 differently.

I'm neither Johnnie nor Eric but I think the basic tools on sparc are
stabilizing (compiler, glibc2.1, kernel). I don't think Sparc is ready
for a full blown quality release like i386.

Does it make sense to go for a stabilized developer snapshot, i.e.
a Sparc port which has base, required, standard and parts of the
optional packages (sources based on the slink dist of i386) ?
Kind of a official _development_ release with a big disclaimer about
the development character of the port. Powerpc probably would be a
second candidate for such a release.

2 reasons in favour:

* we ease the work of the CD producers to provide a _reasonable_
(installable) snapshot of the ports

* if there's a stabilized snapshot newbies will get (hopefully) a
softer introduction in the wonders of the Linux-Sparc/Powerpc/Arm/... world

Ok. So 19839, 19946 and the related passwd bug 21275 should be

James, you downgraded 19839 and 19946. Could you downgrade 21275 as well ?

I agree totally. My only remaining concern is the fact that
update-passwd was intended as helper utility to keep passwd/group
uptodate but it's still somewhat broken. passwd/group are no conffiles
anymore. Everybody who upgrades won't notice that passwd/group have
changed because the usual 'want to keep your version of conffile'-kind
of dialog won't happen anymore. update-passwd isn't run by default,
too. The majority of systems will keep their bo-passwd/group files
because the users aren't notified that passwd/group have changed.

I checked the diff: msql, gnats and amanda will be affected (msql
entry missing, gnats entry wrong and backup entry wrong).

 Suggestions what to do ?

Still an open question how to notify the users during upgrade.

Great ;-)

Brian, are you listening ?

The postinst should be changed to something along the lines:

  update-passwd --sanity-check
  update-passwd -n
Ask user if changes are ok.
  If yes
  update-passwd

No, please don't do this. Even if you do fix all the known bugs, it's
_way_ too late in the game to put an automatic call of update-passwd
 back in the postinst.

Intent to fix base-passwd

1998-06-02 Thread Christian Meder
Hi,

while testing the base packages I hit the critical bugs surrounding the
update-passwd binary contained in base-passwd.

I want to introduce a -n flag to update-passwd which prints out the
proposed changes to /etc/passwd and /etc/group without actually
executing them (debug mode). I try to take care of the NIS and shadow
stuff. The postinst should be changed to something along the lines:

update-passwd --sanity-check
update-passwd -n
Ask user if changes are ok.
If yes
update-passwd

Any objections and/or other proposals how to fix the critical bugs ?

Greetings,

Christian

Great !!
where do the packages install ? /usr/local/ or /usr ?

I'm planning on writing a complete report when I'm done, so I'll skip
most of the details now. The port was really easy; the biggest issue
so far is that a lot of the make files in blah/debian/rules presume
that /bin/sh is bash, which really screws all sorts of shit up on these
three platforms. Anyway, things are going well.

Perhaps it's time to begin filing bug reports on this issue ?

We at Mindspring plan on using dpkg to manage the software on all of
our server machines, if we can get it to do the job to our satisfaction
(which I think we can.) I plan on feeding everything back to the project,
of course, and like I said, I plan on writing and publishing a report on
the project when I'm done. Is anyone else interested in such a project?
Would progress reports to the devel group be appreciated?

Certainly :-)

Summary of the html/info/webserver/whatever mess

1997-06-29 Thread Christian Meder
Hi,

I will try to summarize what I did understand of the whole mess up to
now for my own mind's sanity (had to wade through all emails ;-)

Note that I won't include my own opinion (except where indicated), I
just want to summarize the technical and emotional points of view I
saw and I state my questions and conclusions. Note also that I left
out all these useless arguments like: more versatile, better base
format, browses nicely, accepted standard, etc.

Facts:

1. we started from a policy discussion about a documentation standard
for all debian packages

2. general documentation policy:

- it should be difficult to install a package without
  documentation
- documentation policy regarding splitting should only apply
above a certain threshold (proposed 100k)
- it should be possible to install a package without
  documentation
- documentation should be architecture independent so there is
only one documentation copy on the ftp site
- one should only have to download the documentation he wants
to install (say only info or only html or nothing at all)

!! Is here something missing ?

Proposed solutions:
I. split documentation in different packages (foo-doc-html,
foo-doc-info) which provide (foo-doc). foo suggests foo-doc.

Advantages:
+ meets all the mentioned criteria except perhaps the first one
+ possible with current tools

Disadvantages:
- more work for the maintainers regarding the splitting of packages
- increases package numbers, resulting in an even more cumbersome
packages list :-/

II. leaving documentation in the same package or at most one foo-doc
package

Advantages:
+ less work for the maintainers
+ hides documentation exclusion in the package tool (but this is
possible in the first approach either if the package tools are changed)

Disadvantages:
- doesn't satisfy the last three arguments of the list
- excluding not wanted documentation requires changes of package tools

!! Are there more solutions ?

3. from there the question of the default documentation format came up:

there are strong advocates of HTML and Info:

HTML:
++ images
++ easy to reformat
++ links over the net
++ no hard line breaks

-- uncompressed HTML is (much) larger than info docs (most mentioned point)
-- searching is done externally and there is no standard accepted way
of searching (yet) compared to info docs
-- no booklike hardcopy

Info:
++ searching is integrated
++ small

-- links out of the document are not (well) supported
-- not easy to reformat
-- no booklike hardcopy

Proposed solution: keeping both formats. Moving to HTML as default.

!! Should gzipped HTML be the default ? (I suppose most people will
answer here yes. That's why we got the webbrowser/webserver mud
throwing :-(

!! Suppose HTML is the default:
Questions:
- if different doc formats are available, only HTML should be
  shipped ?
- if only latex, info, etc. are available, should they
be converted to HTML (how much effort is acceptable)
and again only HTML is shipped?
- if sgml or texi is available, should the sources be
  shipped too ?
- should there be always a HTML and an info version,
  if possible ?
- which documentation format do we encourage upstream?
- should the manpages format be included in these
  considerations (man2html) ?

Assuming all these questions are decided on we can start the
webbrowser/webserver flame war :-(

IMHO the general documentation policy topic outlined above and the
preferred format topic are still not satisfying the proposed criteria.
We should work out these basics before discussing implementation.

[to Christian Schwarz: Sorry, that I brought the topic up again without
proposing better paragraphs, will try to work on a proposal in the
coming week]

BTW everybody calm down. It's only about documentation. If you want to
start flaming then take a more important topic like e.g. ice cream ;-)

Christian

which group ?

1997-05-15 Thread Christian Meder
Hi,

I'm in the process of packaging amanda (a network backup system -
client-server). In the install guide it's recommended to install the
binaries under a non privileged user and put this user in a group
which has raw access to the disk devices. So I thought I take the user
backup and the group disk for the binaries. Is this a sensible
decision ? Should I follow this advice at all or just use root:root ?
Are there any other points which should be taken into
account ?

Does there exist a Readme which explains the reason and the usage for
the different users and different groups ?

And last question ;-)

I looked at the dump package and found out that /sbin/dump and
/sbin/restore are in the group tty. Why are they in tty, shouldn't it
be disk ?
