Bug#1070149: ITP: jack -- Rip and encode CDs with one command

2024-04-30 Thread Cord Beermann
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Cord Beermann
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-devel@lists.debian.org

* Package name: jack
  Version : 4~git20230906.795fba0
  Upstream Contact: Arne Zellentin
* URL : https://github.com/jack-cli-cd-ripper/jack
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : Rip and encode CDs with one command

Jack has been developed with one main goal: making OGGs (or MP3s)
without having to worry. There is nearly no way that an incomplete rip
goes unnoticed, e.g. jack compares WAV and OGG file sizes when
continuing from a previous run. Jack also checks your HD space before
doing anything (even keeps some MB free).
 .
Jack is different from other such tools in a number of ways:
  - it supports different rippers and encoders
  - it is very configurable
  - it doesn't need X
  - it can "rip" virtual CD images like the ones created by cdrdao
  - when using cdparanoia, cdparanoia's status information is displayed
and archived for all tracks, so you can see if something went wrong
  - it uses sophisticated disk space management, i.e. it schedules its
ripping/encoding processes depending on available space.
  - freedb/gnudb/musicbrainz query, file renaming and id3/ogg-tagging
  - it can resume work after it has been interrupted. If all tracks have
been ripped, it doesn't even need the CD anymore, even if you want
to do a freedb query.
  - it can do a freedb query based on OGGs alone, like if you don't
remember from which CD those OGGs came from.
  - freedb submissions

I used jack a long time, until pathon3 migration. IN the meantime the author
revived the project, so i want to re-introduce it into Debian.

Removing Spam from the Listarchives (was: Debian mailing lists archives as mbox

2011-08-04 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Andreas Tille) hast geschrieben:

[we should seperate the GSoC-project from the ListArchiveSpam efforts]

As far as I know it is not only Christian and if we really want to get
more people involved into Debian (including non-technicans) tasks like
cleaning up the list archive from SPAM might be somehow interesting.

as i wrote the review-stuff explained in
http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/ListMaster/ListArchiveSpam#new_web-based_effort_to_flag_spam.
I'm always interested in better methods to recognize spam.

The only thing i'm currently aware of are the 'task-forces' which are
listed here:
http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/ListMaster/ListArchiveSpam#People_doing_this

Behind the scenes i already use the results of the review to also
remove similar spam from other lists. That is much more manual doing
than it is good, but it is better to have some spam online, than legit
content offline.

However: I don't feel that d-devel is a good place for this
discussion, where should we take it (if there are even enough people
for it)?

Yours,
Cord

Re: Bug#617999: Please include link to general info in each lists page

2011-03-18 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Michelle Konzack) hast geschrieben:

it would be nice, if lists.debian.org could implement an autoresponder
for peoles sending messages to lists without being subscribed.

This message should only send one time per year and contain usefull
links based on the mailinglist, the FAQ and the CoC.

Please file a wishlist-bug for this and don't polute a valid request
for an enhancement for the Mailinglists descriptions.

Cord, Debian Listmaster of the day

Bug#470185: RFH: jove -- Jonathan's Own Version of Emacs - a compact, powerful editor

2008-03-09 Thread Cord Beermann
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request assistance with maintaining the jove package.

The package description is:
Jove is a compact, powerful Emacs-style text-editor. It provides the common
emacs keyboard bindings, together with a reasonable assortment of the most
popular advanced features (e.g. interactive shell windows, compile-it,
language specific modes) while weighing in with CPU, memory, and disk
 requirements comparable to vi(1).

Bug#470187: RFH: nn -- Heavy-duty USENET news reader (curses-based client)

2008-03-09 Thread Cord Beermann
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request assistance with maintaining the nn package.

The package description is:
The motto of nn is its expanded name, which is No News is good
news, but nn is better, and the nn newsreader is designed to let you
minimize the amount of time you spend reading news (or, more
realistically, to allow you to follow even more newsgroups :-).
 .
Nn allows you to quickly select articles of interest and skip the
rest. It also supports efficient article killing and selection of
 articles by author and subject.
 .
This version of nn reads news from a news server via NNTP (the
Network News Transfer Protocol), and can make use of your NNTP
server's NOV database, if configured. You must have a news server
available - large sites usually provide a site-wide server. (For
those familiar with 'nn', this is a client-only version.)

Bug#470188: RFH: milter-greylist -- GreyList milter for sendmail

2008-03-09 Thread Cord Beermann
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request assistance with maintaining the milter-greylist package.

The package description is:
milter-greylist is a stand-alone milter written in C that implements the
greylist filtering method, as proposed by Evan Harris.
 .
Grey listing works by assuming that unlike legitimate MTA, spam engines will
not retry sending their junk mail on a temporary error. The filter will
always temporarily reject mail on a first attempt, and to accept it after
 some time has elapsed.
 .
If spammers ever try to resend rejected messages, we can assume they will not
stay idle between the two sends (if they do, the spam problem would just be
solved). Odds are good that the spammer will send a mail to an honey pot
address and get blacklisted in several real-time distributed black list
 before the second attempt.

Re: Bug#415263: ITP: gpspoint -- exchange data with a (garmin) gps receiver

2007-03-17 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Colin Tuckley) hast geschrieben:

gpspoint is a program to exchange data with a (garmin) gps receiver.
You can upload and download waypoints, routes, tracks and various
 other data.

How is this different/better than gpsbabel which can do all of this for many
different types of GPSr's and several different file formats too?

gpsbabel doesn't support the 'gpspoint'-format, which i need as input
for some other software i use.

I use gpspoint for years and just ran over the fact that i have
sometime ago downloaded the package from
http://gpspoint.dnsalias.net/gpspoint2/download/ (which also contains
a debian-repository), but there isn't an official package.

Cord

Hallo! Du (Javier Fern?ndez-Sanguino Pe?a) hast geschrieben:

Well. I have reported through the button in the past months spam for three
different mailing lists (debian-doc, debian-l10n-spanish, and
debian-devel-spanish) and I *still* see the reported spam there [1]. So I'm a
little bit skeptical :-)

Regards

Javier

[1] I also might have made a few mistakes, so I can understand that the
listmasters take some time to filter those, but I believe I reported lots of
it back in november.

We are currently three people acting as listmaster and/or
archivemaster, all with a lot more work to do inside and outside of
Debian, so i would suggest to not hold your breath til we reach the
point when you see 'normal' spam disappearing from the archive.

However: your input is not lost (it's just buried ;-)

Re: lists.d.o Spam (was: Marking BTS spam)

2006-03-03 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Javier Fern?ndez-Sanguino Pe?a) hast geschrieben:

Well, I thought it would be useful to

a) have spam mails from the mailing list archive
b) enhance the filters

for that we have the 'report as spam'-Button. We also use that input
for the filters, but mainly, the damage is done in some cases years
ago, it makes no sense to use that now in the filters, because spam
has changed since then, and the filters may be adjusted in response to
old spam already.

The button is good for pointing out where we should remove something.

I bounced a month's worth of spam with that idea in mind. I don't see what
advantage is there in reporting only 2 day's worth of spam. It's not like we
are going to report this to the ISPs (like Spamcop is), are we?

In any case, I will refrain from bouncing old spam from now on.

As we change our filters on a regular basis, those old spams may be
filtered already, so we have to single them out to find other common
criteria for the 'new' spam.

As a rule of thumb: don't send in spam to the experimental address
thats older then the timestamp of our filters. (which appears in our
headers.) It's always fine to nominate Spam you find in our
Listarchive.

I understand that this mechanism could be abused by casual bystanders, but
you could maybe set trusted moderators for lists in the sense that *their*
reports (conveniently GPG signed) could be used to remove spam in a more
automatic fashion?

After all, if we trust DDs to develop software that installs in our
systems as root I guess we could trust some of them to report spam fairly.

I agree generally, but establishing that needs some work ;-)

IMHO, that's one of the issues with the web reporting button: it's anonymous
and might lead to abuse. If you can link report to reporter (through a
GPG-signed e-mail) then you can increase trust (if you trust the reporter)
and consequently, increase your confidence in doing something more automated
with *his* report than with John Doe's. Would that be a possibility? Maybe
long term?

maybe :-)

Yours,
Cord, Debian Listmaster of the day

I've just bounced all the spam from Debian mailing lists that got through my

Is it OK if we, mutt users, use this?

---
[snip]
---

it's ok if you script it and make it easy to report.

it's not ok to bounce us spam from years ago, this address is another
feedback-loop to enhace our filters, it's useless to get old[1] spam
there.

(and for those that expect immediate healing from this: the input
won't be piped into some filters for learning, as it would be to
easy to poison it then.)

Is sa-learn --spam considered black shell magic? Of course you
need to sa-learn --ham on some non-spam too. That's what I do with
nominated messages to the BTS, and messages with a certain range of
spamassassin scores.

no, it's not that easy, and my 'black-shell-magic' refers to getting
the whole nominated postings from the listarchive.

Also we (the listmasters) don't train the bayes-filter, we add also
rules to procmail and SpamAssassin if nessecary.

lists.d.o Spam (was: Marking BTS spam)

2006-02-24 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Nico Golde) hast geschrieben:

At the moment the spam-report.pl script uses:
input type=hidden name=listname value=debian-devel /
input type=hidden name=msg value=msg00065.html /
input type=hidden name=date value=2005/09 /

To identify the message, this wouldn't work with a MUA so the idea came
to my mind was to identify the Mail with the message-ID.
Paskal Hakim asked what happens if someone fakes the message-ID in the old
thread
about this topic. Well this could happen, so someone has another idea?

i took the logfile from the reporting script and checked some
'nominated' Files.

As it turns out the top scorer for this year is:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2006/01/msg00035.html

on all logged data two non-spam postings on d-spanish-users were also
top20 nominated.

So it looks like a not so good idea to automatically use that data,
it can be used as fingerpoint where to look but not more.

We have two uses for that reporting.

1. Removing identified spam from the Archive.
2. Enhancing the filters.

on 2: we would need a whole spam-mail including all headers so we can
find charakteristika to filter on, so i now take all nominated
postings, and try to find patterns with some black
shell-magic.

The idea of having a reporting address is good, i'll will announce one
in the next days and then lets see what happens.

However: there will be some really black .procmail-magic that pulls
out everything that doesn't look appropriate (multi nomination of a
posting, uncomplete headers and stuff). More info when it is in place.

ok, here it is: (alpha release, lets see what happens and if it is
useful.)

If you get spam via our lists, BOUNCE[1] it to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Incomplete mails[2] will be discarded,
* mis-use (report of non-spam, mass-reporting of one spam, automatic
forwarding based on some automatism (scores of Anti-Spamtools or
   something)) will be blacklisted.

The reported mails will be used to enhance our Spamassassin and
procmail-filters. The mails will be stored non-public.

[1] Bounce as in mutt b. I don't know if and how this can be done in
thunderbird, or M$ LookOut. If it possible someone may explain
it in a follow up. Forwarding is NOT ok at this time, those
mails will be discarded.

[2] I want complete mails. this means: ALL Headers and the body. If
your system adds its own headers, or overwrites our
Spamassassin-Headers it's ok,

2006-01-29 Thread Cord Beermann
Greetings from the Debian-Listmasters.

We are still looking for a mailaddress which is forwarded to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

That Mailadress seems to respond to all postings to our Mailinglist
debian-devel with a challenge-response reply.

This mail is a test mailing, to check if this address
is the one we are looking for.

We have to do this, because all other methods to identify that address
failed. We also use this special-bounce-address, to make sure that we
aren't whitelisted.

If you get an unsubscription message afterwards, we most likely have
identify you as the one.

If no unsubscription occurs you can safely ignore this message. We hope this
is the last time we have to do this. We are aware of the fact that we bother
~2500 subscribers to identify one fuckwit.

Yours,
Debian Listmaster ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

[Listmaster] Seeking petsupermarket (was: How to Increase Contributions from Volunteers)

2006-01-02 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Linas Zvirblis) hast geschrieben:

BTW, Who da hell is some AntiSpam UOL? Everytime that I send an email to
debian-devel that stupid machine sends me an email. Is there a way to
block?

Yes, the [EMAIL PROTECTED] is back. You will just have to
block this address on your side until listmaster takes care of this.

You might have seen the probes we send out in the last year.

Sadly it didn't work out as hoped, so i (and ${all_subscribers}-1 here)
would be thankful if anyone can provide more information about
petsupermarket (you don't have to point out the website, i already
tried to contact all address i could find there).

Someone who is subscribed to d-devel forwards the mails to
petsupermarket. petsupermarket itself is not subscribed to any of our
mailinglists.

If you have seen those c-r-responses outside of the debian-lists, or
in the last days on other lists than debian-devel, then this
information is maybe helpful to identify the address.

We already put many hours in trying to identify this annoying member,
and this really sucks, as this time is lost for other activities or
enhancements we could do inside or outside of the Project.

Cord, wearing his black listmaster-hat and carrying a large
flamethrower.

Re: Release-critical Bugreport for May 14, 2004

2004-10-24 Thread Cord Beermann
Hallo! Du (Colin Watson) hast geschrieben:

As far as I can tell, the reports are still being mailed as normal.
Perhaps a listmaster could investigate why they're not reaching the
debian-devel-announce readership.

a lot of funny spamassassin-hits pushed the report to junk.

I added a temporary(?) fix, and bounced the latest report to the list.

Sorry for the inconvinience,
Cord

   * New upstream release
   * after a long time now another try for a new gq-version.
please note that this is a beta version, after my first tests i
 .
don't think that this is ready for unstable. (for instance i had the
problem that gq locks my cursor, so i had to kill gq from the console to
 use my X again.
 .
So i don't touch the bugs now. (the bugs #198401, #220548, #154943 are
surely fixed with this version, for the other bugs i have to check some
 more.)

Description:
jove - Jonathan's Own Version of Emacs - a compact, powerful editor
xjove - X11-Frontend for jove - a compact, powerful editor
Closes: 162636
Changes:
 jove (4.16.0.58-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release
   * Fixed references of jove.rc in the manpage (closes: #162636)
   * I would like to remove the /usr/doc - /usr/share/doc link, but the
debhelper-version currently in testing isn't able to. So it remains for
 now. (and lintian is unhappy.)
   * As we don't need to restart the temp-file recovery after a
 dpkg-reconfigure i don't see a sense in adding a debconf-versioning.
 (lintian is unhappy.)
   * removed 'full stop' from descriptons. (lintian is a little happier.)
   * bumped Standard to 3.5.8.0. (no change)
