 dhelp (0.6.16) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Include Apache configuration file to limit dhelp CGI access to localhost.
   * dhelp_fetcher: Don't give hints about which files exist in the filesystem
   * Be smarter about indexing: check if the documents are already registered,
and only index if they weren't. This will skip indexing for package
upgrades, but will keep it for installation of new packages.
   * Follow symlinks when indexing.
   * Add a simple verbose option to dhelp_parse.
   * Take the package version from the changelog, instead of checking that the
version in the changelog and the one in the Makefile are in sync. This
avoids FTBFS for binary-only NMUs (Closes: #521910).

   * Capitalise all sections properly (Closes: #502557).

   * Change WordThreshold to 5. It's better for low memory machines, and
both dwww and man2html are using that setting (Closes: #471558). Thanks

debhelper), call dhelp_parse without using absolute paths and bump

   * Switch from pstotext to pdftotext from xpdf-utils for PDF files. It
seems much more reliable (less random errors when parsing documents).
 Hopefully closes: #475655.
   * Use /var/lib/dhelp/tmp instead of /var/tmp for temporary files, to avoid
possible security issues (thanks Laurent Bonnaud).

Disruptive changes in dhelp

2008-05-29 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
Hey there,

Some time ago I made disruptive changes to dhelp_parse, part of dhelp. I
assumed that the only one calling it was doc-base (in particular,
install-docs), so I synced the changes with some doc-base release and just
made them.

Now some bug (#482807) was assigned to dhelp, and then I realised that
there might be other people having calls to dhelp_parse in the postinst or
whatever. To make things worse, I forgot to update the manpage, so it still
documented the old behaviour/interface. I just uploaded a new version of
dhelp, fixing that.

So, if you are calling dhelp_parse in your postinst, please use doc-base
instead (if you're not already, and you should), don't call dhelp_parse
yourself. A simple call to install-docs should be enough to make dhelp aware
of your documentation.

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Muchas gracias, si alguien me puede ayudar que me escriba.

¡Hola!

¿Tienes problemas usando reportbug? Debería ser fácil escribiendo en una
consola:

reportbug xserver-xorg-video-ati

Te hará un par de preguntas, y luego tendrás que escribir la descripción del
problema. No debería ser difícil de usar. Si no tienes reportbug instalado,
el paquete se llama igual («reportbug»).

   * Changed all the indexing system so it now searches in the registered
document, instead of in the HTML directory generated by dhelp.
   * Make .dhelp files obsolete, just use doc-base files directly. They contain
more information, maintenance is easier over all (we get rid of pointless
conversions), and we get rid of bugs
 (Closes: #19076, #429233, #334789, #347980, #155054, #177668, #19076).
   * Clean up dhelp.pot file weirdness (Closes: #448211).
   * Removed the hardcoded HTML in favour of using templates, redesign the
appearance of all pages, and made all those templates translatable to
 different languages using gettext.
   * Added configuration file to specify directories to search for doc-base
 files (Closes: #81405).
   * Add a special, all section with all the documents (Closes: #188258).
   * Show relevant portions of the results when searching (Closes: #272953).
   * Order sections (Closes: #283402).

making the postinst wait for the indexing even if it was run in the
 background.
   * Depend on swish++ instead of just recommending it.
   * Recommend or suggest different packages that give preview on search
 results
   * Change mozilla-firefox dependency to iceweasel.

 Hi,

if you do rewrite stuff, could you try to make the integration with
doc-base more tight? The .dhelp files it writes out seem rather
unnecessary given that we already have /usr/share/doc-base/*.

OK. That will probably go to the TODO, once we start making changes. There
are lots of things I would like to change/fix...

Ruby is not among the standard installation. May I suggest PERL instead?
(Not that I prefer PERL to Ruby -- this is just for dependencies' sake)

Well, I first thought about Perl, too, when I proposed Stefan to rewrite
it... But later I thought that Ruby is now more or less popular in Debian (you
can see references to it from time to time on Planet Debian, for example, and
there is a Ruby package maintainer group), and dhelp isn't a required package
anyway, so it's not like we're forcing everyone to install Ruby. And last, but
not least, the Ruby version is already written, working, and has a (small,
admittedly) test suite.

Now dhelp_parse.rb is VERY readable (IMHO) and it's pretty easy to change
stuff (and has some cool features the C version didn't, BTW). I don't think we
could have achieved that easily in Perl (but I don't want to start a flamewar,
so I won't argue ;-) ).

Regards,

Intent to hijack the dhelp package

2006-09-25 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
Hi all,

As Javier noted just after releasing Sarge [1], we need better
documentation integration tools in Debian. Yes, we have dhelp [2], but it
lacks loads of features, and it's not what I would call in shape [3]. I have
tried to fix this situation, mostly by organizing and merging bug reports, and
writing a couple of patches for them.

I have even rewritten dhelp_parse, one of the main utilities, in Ruby [4]
(mostly because it's a huge PITA finding and fixing bugs in a largely text
processing program... written in C). It maintains compatibility with the
documentation database, so it's a drop-in replacement. At least it should :-)

I have tried to talk to the maintainer several times, but, although he
replied to the first messages, he has been pretty unresponsive to the most
important ones. I understand that now is probably the _worst_ moment to make
potentially disruptive changes to any package, so what I propose is:

1) Give Stefan some time to reply.
2) Make a list of interested people, so we can start a group (a package
like dhelp should be maintained by several people IMHO), and take the old
Alioth project [5] back to life.
3) Start discussing a pending problem, related to dhelp _and_ other
packages: the official section list [6].
4) Perhaps, set up a wiki with ideas.
5) Perhaps even upload the Ruby version to experimental, so people can
start playing with it.

If Stefan doesn't reply and nothing weird happens, I plan to hijack the dhelp
package *after releasing Etch*.

Best regards,

Bug#341904: ITP: libjson-ruby -- JSON library for Ruby

2005-12-03 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Esteban Manchado Velázquez [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: libjson-ruby
  Version : 0.4.0
Upstream Author : Florian Frank [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://json.rubyforge.org/
* License : GPL
Description : JSON library for Ruby

This library implements the JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) specification in
Ruby, allowing the developer to easily convert data between Ruby and JSON. You
can think of it as a low fat alternative to XML, if you want to store data to
disk or transmit it over a network rather than use a verbose markup language.

Llevo ya casi medio año usando Debian (y bastante mas usando Linux) y ya me
he enamorado de esta distribución ;=). Es por esto que me gustaría ayudar en
lo que fuese posible y me permitiese mi tiempo.

Guay :-)

Why should I want a per-user configuration option for temp file location?

For their size? Apart from web browser cache, what can be so big?

So? Browser caches should be deleted too, when the browser is deinstalled.

What if I want to keep the history, bookmarks, or whatever perhaps even
for an enhanced version (think Mozilla, Galeon, Epiphany and all of that).

Anyway, there's email readers (my .sylpheed is 73 MBytes), news readers,
picture browsers, ... my ~/.sylpheed is bigger than my ~/.kde.

73 Mbytes? What does sylpheed save in its directory? Sent mail, perhaps? If
so, I personally would be *very* pissed off if uninstalling the package would
delete all my sent mail (even if it were a custom binary format).

Now, if one removes or purges, say, KDE to install an unofficial version...
would (s)he loose all his icons and configuration?

It would be nice, perhaps, having a tool to do it by hand, but I don't
think everybody wants it to be done automatically when removing packages.

Well designed software that change their configuration file should be
able to handle an older configuration file.

That's not the point. The point is that a program will never be able to
change the default for any option from FOO to BAR, because FOO is
hardcoded in every user's configuration file -- and it can't know whether
the user has FOO in there because they explicitly set it, or because it's
 the default.

Yes, but I don't think it's worth the effort (and the risk of pissing off
lots of people). Why not simply put a note in README.Debian, if it's that
important?

   Regards,

I ran into the very same error some days ago. I have no idea about the
cause, but doing random tests, we (at work) found that upgrading to testing
and then to unstable fixed the problem. You only have to upgrade libpam or
libpam0g (I'm not sure which of them; the former doesn't exist in unstable,
IIRC), and then you can upgrade normally to unstable. That is, add testing to
your sources.list, do apt-get install libpam/testing, and then upgrade
normally.

   DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer showed nothing, BTW.

License-fee exemption for mp3 decoders removed?

2002-08-28 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
H just read at Slashdot that Thomson and Fraunhofer have changed their
minds and now want to charge for mp3 decoders, too (?).

   http://www.mp3licensing.com/royalty/software.html
   http://slashdot.org/articles/02/08/27/1626241.shtml?tid=155
   http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/openletter.html

The Slashdot note also says that RedHat is going to remove all the mp3 players
from RawHide, their next distro, but they give no links and I can't find any
related note in the RedHat site in a quick search.

The first link seems to make things clear, but I suppose I'm still in that
too weird to believe it state.

Thoughts? May we remove every mp3 player in Sid? What about Woody?
