Re: Another weird tar issue (100 character filenames)
On Tue, Jun 27, 2006 at 01:09:40PM +0200, Jeroen van Wolffelaar wrote: On Tue, Jun 27, 2006 at 09:07:03AM +0100, Roger Leigh wrote: It sounds like a bug that dpkg is using the old v7 tar format which had that 99 char limitation.s tar has a fixed-length field for short (upto 100 bytes) filenames which is not neccessarily null-terminated. Older versions of dpkg did not care about filenames being exactly 100 bytess long and copied everything before the next null character (which happenes to be the filemode). It looks like this issue returned, the question is whether the bug in dpkg was fixed in sarge or not, since by now woody's version of dpkg doesn't really matter that much anymore. The corresponding dpkg-bug is #232025, which was fixed in dpkg 1.10.19, way before the release of sarge. Ingo -- print''x2,$/ print''x2,$/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Package: wnpp Version: unavailable; reported 2003-05-27 Severity: wishlist -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 * Package name: libfilesys-statvfs-perl Version : 0.68 Upstream Author : Ian Guthrie [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : * http://www.cpan.org/modules/by-module/Filesys/IGUTHRIE/ * License : Perl (dual GPL/Artistic License) Description : perl extension for statvfs() Filesys::Statvfs provides an interface between Perl and the statvfs() system call. Filesys::Df uses Filesys::Statvfs to obtain filesystem statistics then creates additional filesystem information such as percent full, user and superuser differentials, etc. This module differs from libfilesys-diskfree in that it does call statfs() directly and does not rely on the output of /bin/df. - -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux pinguin 2.4.21-rc3-1 #1 Fre Mai 23 17:40:10 CEST 2003 i686 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+03Pw4XrXtQkN2NURAkhXAKDMUEOhaUYGHb5fA9kj2o7ZzM4wBACgiykW no10g2icagQ1KpWSDAIjd44= =KdvU -END PGP SIGNATURE-

Otherwise dpkg probably will fail on unconfigured predependencies... apt-get --reinstall install `dpkg --get-selections | awk '$2 == install { print $1 }'` But--no guarantee this is going to work out of the box, you probably need to mess around with apt, dpkg and/or debconf first. You shouldn't force the use of stow on anyone, either. I think is is a nice package to keep your /usr/local directory clean, but I guess there are many admins out there who don't like stow. In addition to that it needs a completely non-standart directory to hold the stowed software (the stow package defaults to use /usr/local/stow). So I think putting the files in the directory /usr/lib/win32 would be fine, if you remove them after uninstalling your package. Don't mess with /usr/local. Thanks. I think you missed the point Marco d'Itri was talking about. Downloading CD images is not different from keeping a private mirror up to date. The private mirror even might save you some bandwidth. Also cdimage.debian.org suggests that you install from a public mirror, if you have the bandwidth you'd also require to keep a local mirror or download CD images. Debian currently contains much more packages than anybody would install. I doubt that even on big installations more than 50% of all debian packages would be installed. Debian includes additional tools (apt), that make accessing remote repositories easier than finding packages by hand in a local mirror. Thus a proxy would serve local machines much better than a local mirror or CD images. For a single host I'd suggest running apt-get -d overnight. OK it's not a very nice solution but there isn't a better one. I personally have nuked the base package and lost all my devices this way. Sorry to step in, but there might be a better solution to the problem. I think you can preserve files of an old package which otherwise wold be removed. The possible solution I see to this case is using dpkg-divert. If base is still installed you should dpkg-divert every file in /dev that used to be in that package to some other place. Example: dpkg-divert --package base-files --divert-to /dev.base/hda /dev/hda Then if you remove base, the devices would not get removed. There however might be many files to divert and I don't know if somebody really wants to do this. And as already mentioned this package is quite old so only few people would using it.
