Bug#221135: ITP: imediff2 -- interactive full screen 2-way merge tool
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: imediff2 Version : 1.0 Upstream Author : Jarno Elonen [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://iki.fi/elonen/code/imediff/ * License : GPL Description : interactive full screen 2-way merge tool Imediff2 lets you merge two (slightly different) files interactively with a user friendly full screen interface in text mode. It provides a drop-in replacement for 'sdiff'. Imediff2 shows the differences of given two files (in color if the terminal supports them), lets you scroll the file and toggle changes between old and new version one by one. Unlike split screen based merge tools, it shows only one, partially merged, version at a time, making it more 'wysiwyg'. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux supertiger 2.4.20 #1 Tue Aug 5 23:39:44 EEST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI

Open questions of package descriptions (Was: Bug#198665: ITP: pmk...)
* lose the article Why? * do not capitalize the beginning of the description unless a proper noun, proper adjective, abbreviation, or acronym requires it Why? Argh, we really should decide these two points now and for good. Just today I received through DDTP a description correction that only consisted of capitalization of the first letter. I don't care one bit about which way should become official but we need the consistency. - Jarno
Proposal: a generic dpkg event hook broker
Hi, Packages often benefit from having other packages installed but don't necessary require them, hence 'suggests' and 'recommends'. Such packages, however, often require additional configuration to make them work with those optional packages. It's not usually very complicated and could in many cases be easily made automatic if there was a way to run the setup scripts when the optional packages come available. I propose making a dpkg event broker, a database of scripts that would like to run when the packages they are interested in are getting a {pre, post}{inst,rm} treatment. This kind of install hook system is already implemented in some individual packages like emacs (registering/deregistering plugins, I think) and openoffice (also registering plugins). As an additional example, it would be nice to have 'libgphoto2' setup digital camera permission scripts when 'hotplug' is installed after asking the user which flavour of the script she wants (grant access to user or group and to which one) and removing them when 'hotplug' is being uninstalled. The manual procedure for doing this is currently explained in README.Debian of 'libgphoto2' but it would be nice if it was automatic 1) to make it easier for the admin and 2) because most users (myself included) will read the file only as a last resort.. ;) Comments, objections and/or suggestions for implementation details? - Jarno
Re: Debian conference in the US?
That's funny considering just how many people are risking their LIVES to get here. Then again, maybe its not, maybe its an insult to the ones who've died trying to get here over the years. I don't think not wanting to go somewhere is an insult to other people who do want to go there. The DMCA is one problem. One which is not just a US headache. The EU Copyright Directive is coming next, so where will all you Europeans run to when that law eventually comes into force? 1) It's fortuantely not here yet 2) Even the proposal is not as bad as DMCA and most countries will implement a much milder laws than suggested 3) Even if the DMCA was copied verbatim to Finland, I would prefer to get prosecuted near home where I know the culture and can speak my native language And this is also only a US problem? Don't take us wrong, of course it's not. It's just that US IPR enforcement policies there are currently quite unpredictable and the general (or even *official*) attitude toward foreigners isn't exactly warm at the moment. Please don't take it as a personal insult. I've visited USA multiple times, like especially NYC and have taken some very nice photos from the WTC etc. Still, even if I'm overly cautios, I just don't want to risk getting imprisoned in a foreign land for contributing to Transcode, for example. The situation may change in the future, of course. I bet there are places where American Debian developer's don't feel safe to travel either but I doubt you mean it as an insult to people living there - or people wanting to move there. - Jarno
Re: Debian conference in the US?
As other people have said: I'm not going, but I don't object to a conference in the US per se. Same here. Even if I had the money to attend, I wouldn't like to travel to the US because of the new copyright and anti-terrorist laws. Still, I think it's a good idea to arrange a conference for the American developers. - Jarno

Re: dpkg conffiles merging - request for status summary
Afaik the original conffile is not available, dpkg just has the md5sum of it in /var/lib/dpkg/status. I doubt that two-way-merging is _very_ useful. Well, you can now try for yourself. :-) http://elonen.iki.fi/code/dpkg-merge/ - Jarno
Re: experimental conffile merge for dpkg
Why two-way merge instead of three-way? Because of... Unfortunately neither is currently possible at the moment, simply because dpkg doesn't save a copy of the last installed config file anywhere. ...this. I thought it would make big difference to have even 2-way merging now instead of none at all, and that there really ought to be a more intuitive tool for the job than sdiff. So actually, imediff2 was my main goal and dpkg was just the main motivation for making it. If we can agree wether or not, how and where the original conffiles should be saved, I'll be happy to implement 3-way merging to dpkg and write imediff3 as a user friendly UI for it. Opinions? - Jarno
Re: experimental conffile merge for dpkg
There might be things to think about though: some packages have lots of conffiles, and that could mean some extra disk space, which not everyone will want to spend. Maybe make it optional. Bzipping could help, and maybe even tarring them all to one file. As a quick test, I bzip-tarred my entire /etc. The resulting file was merely 1.4MB even though there are about 1300 'ii' or 'rc' packages on my system. - Jarno
experimental conffile merge for dpkg
Hi, I've written an experimental conffile merge support for dpkg. http://elonen.iki.fi/code/dpkg-merge/ contains the patched dpkg and a new interactive python curses based two-way merge tool called imediff2 (+ 3 screenshots for the impatient). For those who would like try it: + install 'dpkg_1.10.10merge_i386.deb' + install 'imediff2_1.0-1_all.deb' + run 'export MERGE2=/usr/bin/imediff2' + install some package with updated conffiles and press 'm' (the option is only visible if the MERGE2 environment variable is set) The changes to dpkg are also in a separate patch file, 'dpkg-merge.patch' Here's the proposed changelog for dpkg: * Added an experimental 'Merge' option (Closes: #189805, #48717, #120152) * Enclosed file names with quotes in command string (Closes #147583) * Added a message with the path of the new conffile in Suspend * Ignore SIGINT while waiting for child processes so that dpkg doesn't die if the child is ctrl-c'd - Jarno
Don't remove Reiserfstools (Re: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian)
I guess if Reiser doesn't want an fsck/mkreiserfs without his beloved credits message, it's time to dump reiserfs from Debian and switch to ext3/XFS/whatever. Please don't. I'm running reiserfs on most of my home system's disks and have been *very* happy with it (..and don't even have the disk space required for converting ;). Just because one small feature of a magnificent piece of software is slightly annoying, doesn't justify removing it from the repository. That would take a severe license problem and even then I would recommend moving it to non-free if the problem doesn't make the package strictly illegal. - Jarno
Re: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian
I note that few people are cc'ing Hans Reiser on things they seem to expect him to respond to; is everybody assuming that he's subscribed to debian-devel? Anyway, now that Ed has come back, let us just wait for him to clarify the issue with Hans (and/or continue the *license* debate in -legal)? - Jarno
Re: If Debian decides that the Gnu Free Doc License is not free...
(Hans Reiser wrote:) I look forward to the release of GPL V3 which will hopefully cover fair crediting of code as well as documentation, and stem this rising tide of plagiarism and political bowlderization by distros. I think nobody here has anything against keeping all the credits in documentation or trying to take the credit for ReiserFS tools. The problem now seems to be that: if the program outputs a long credits thanks list in a very uncomfortable place such as startup, can a free software license really *prohibit modifying the code* so that the listing is moved behind a switch, about menu item or such? IMHO, it is reasonable to demand that all credits must be easily accessible in derived works but not that a long list appears *before the program does anything useful* - it both hinders the usability of the program and severely restricts the freedom to modify the code. Re: If Debian decides that the Gnu Free Doc License is not free then I will be honored to join Stallman and the FSF in the not free section of your distro
We are having a small debate about wheter a user has freedom to modify code of free software when it concerns where a long version of author sponsor list is displayed. It has also been speculated that GPL v3 will have a say on this. Could elaborate what will be in it? (The following message was first sent to RMS directly, but thankfully his old address bounced. There probably are others of you in the GNU project who can answer this as well.) (Hans Reiser wrote:) I look forward to the release of GPL V3 which will hopefully cover fair crediting of code as well as documentation, and stem this rising tide of plagiarism and political bowlderization by distros. Re: If Debian decides that the Gnu Free Doc License is not free...
[About menu item] First time users go to them expecting to find out what the program does, and instead they get the name of the author and remain just as puzzled about what the program itself is for as they were before. I hate them. I see.. :) It has become a GUI idiom though, so most people probably know already what an About box is. I want the same visibility of credits for reiserfs that movies give for their actors. An interesting point. However, a movie goer is prepared for five minutes of credits with entertaining music in the background before 2 hours of the actual movie but a person running a disk utility will probably find it quite distracting to see a lot of stuff unrelated to the task at hand. What she appreciates, is information about the process. There are always quite a few programs involved in almost any task you make in Unix. If the kernel, disk driver, shell, sed, readline and disk utilities all wrote their credits while formatting a disk, the operating system would be nearly unusable. In that perspective, I hope you can understand why a Debian developer striving to put together a quality OS may consider it necessary to trim the output. A small amount of credits (perhaps pointing to a complete author list) is usually fine but if it's more than, say, 5 lines.. It's a balancing act between respecting the original work of the software authors and the wishes and needs of the users. What would you suggest as a solution? I don't want the distro choosing how they are displayed because some distros do things like create boot time splash screens that tell about themselves instead of the authors, and so I have to say that their track record demonstrates that they cannot be trusted with that task. Mm.. I guess such splash screens are made mainly for two reasons: making their marketing easier and because novice users feel intimidated by screenfulls of text at startup. I agree that the first reason can be seen as a disrespectful act but the coin also has another side: compelling marketing of free operating systems helps giving them a wider audience, which is good for the distributed software, too. If someone wants to create a boot program and/or screensaver that picks a random OS component to describe the authors of at boot time, that would be nicest of all. Yes, that's certainly a nice idea. (It would also mask the Linux driver's credits though, but at least they would get the same treatment as the rest of the system.) - Jarno
Re: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian
It's also worth considering that perhaps there is a language difference (does Hans have English as a first language?) that make it seem that the email seem harsher than it really is. Many Europeans are naturally very honest with what they say and at first this comes across as been rude/blunt etc (especially to people who rarely consider the world outside there own borders). Quite true. And while it certainly looks like Hans' was angry or at least frustrated, I for one, consider my English better than the average among Finns but often don't have a clue how my English messages sound for a native. They are probably full of grammar errors, making them sound careless/negligent and contain words that sound funny/obsolete or expressions that are not exactly suitable in the situation. In a face-to-face conversation these shortcomings are compensated by body language. A slightly raised tone of voice is immediately reflected on the other person's face so you don't have to exaggerate like in email. - Jarno
dpkg conffiles merging - request for status summary
Just to bring the uninitiated like me up to date about ways to upgrade changed dpkg conffiles, I would greatly appreciate if someone with insight could summarize the current status: + How emotional has the discussion on this topic been in the past? Scale: 0 (mostly technical) ... 5 (flamewars) ... 9 (new religion) + Are there some specific reasons why dpkg doesn't offer merge interactively in addition to keep old, install new, show diff and shell when upgrading a package with changed conffiles or is it just a feature that nobody has tried to implement yet? + Does dpkg currently save the original conffiles somewhere to make 3-way merging possible? + If I understand correctly, ucf has some merging features. Can it be used as an alternative for dpkg's conffile upgrade interface or is it meant solely for postinst scripts? + I recently proposed using generic configuration file parser program(s) for editing and upgrading simple config files directly without saving the same options in many places at the same time. Have such tools been discussed and/or tried before in the Debian project? + I can program and find this problem interesting. Would some of you authors/maintainers of related tools appreciate help in developing configuration management features? - Jarno
Re: New project proposal: debian-lex
rant If english people don't even know what lex means, they should make a damn effort and and learn it, or at least try to see if they can. The rest of people on Earth using computers have been having headaches learning stupid english slang words like widgets, gadgets or applets for years: show at least some respect, damnit. /rant Ouch, punch taken.. There's a difference here, however. 'Lex' is an academin slang word for which a common language alternative exists, 'law', while 'widget' is the only name for the thing it represents. Debian-law is not an optimal name either, though. It feels like the package contains The Debian Law that every user must follow. (And makes Debian-policy sound like it's a project for making Debian suitable for the police.. :]) Don't mind us detailists, the project is an ambitious and admirable one. You have the right to name it however you like - and if it sounds good to a member of its intended audience, it's probably good. =) - Jarno
Re: anti-spam trick for debian ml (was Re: News about the Package Tracking System)
But for mailing lists it would be annoying to have to add an extra-header each time you want to write to the list. And there are people who don't use mutt or gnus and can't easily add arbitrary headers. I really think that this auto-approval thingie is just a temporary measure until we do something better. How about keeping a whitelist database in which the users can add themselves by sending a mail in certain format to something like [EMAIL PROTECTED]? Only after that would mail from that address be accepted without bouncing. That should filter out most of the spam. - Jarno
Re: Proposed handling of generated configuration files (Re: stop the manage with debconf madness)
ucf still has the same fundamental problem with regard to preconfiguration, which was the primary issue that I raised in my original message. The consensus, as I recall, was that preconfiguration is important, and that prompting in postinst should be minimized. I may have missed something but why can't the changed/merged configuration files be saved somewhere in preinstall phase and the current live configs be overwritten only in the postinstall phase by dpkg or postinst scripts if the rest of the installation went well? - Jarno
Re: Proposed handling of generated configuration files (Re: stop the manage with debconf madness)
I may have missed something but why can't the changed/merged configuration files be saved somewhere in preinstall phase [...] Again: see my first message and followups for a specific, concrete example of why this won't work. Thanks, I read the thread. So the reason was that configuration file generation is mostly done in postinst scripts? I didn't quite get why it couldn't in practically all cases be done in preinst (or even a completely new installation if required), though. Could you provide some counter-example(s)? I doubt the (pre-)dependencies on tools used for generation would really be a problem - the generation scripts are usually quite simple and can usually use pretty standard tools that don't change much. - Jarno
Re: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian
If the upstream author is rude to me, he does not deserve any consideration from myself. If he chooses to alienate his clientele, he should expect to reap what he sowed. The difficulty of their character unfortunately often seems to correlate with the important of their software. ;) So even if the upstreams sometimes heats up easily, please spend extra patience on them for the sake of the users. Pretty please.. I'd really hate to lose something like Reiserfs from Debian just because of a few unpolite mails back and forth. - Jarno
Re: Proposed handling of generated configuration files (Re: stop the manage with debconf madness)
I may have missed something but why can't the changed/merged configuration files be saved somewhere in preinstall phase and the [...] Well, for configuration files that require the unpacked package to generate, you can't ask during preconfiguration. For files created using non essential packages, you need to wait until postinst, or else those utilities may not be available. I have a feeling that these cases are actually quite rare. At least with a little help, the developers currently facing those few cases would most likely be able to split their packages so that proper pre-depends could be applied. Or am I provably being too optimistic? - Jarno
Re: New project proposal: debian-lex
In England there is a move to remove all the Latin and obscure language from the Law, so I would suggest that the project should be called Debian-law not Debian-lex. lex is the better word, as it is not only known in English, but also in most other (roman) Languages for law. The first things lex brings in my mind are lexicon and parser generators like 'flex'. - Jarno
Re: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian
I'd hardly call it plagiarism. Your copyright is, by will of our own policy and to abide by authors wishes, distributed with the tools in /usr/share/doc/pkg/copyright. Ah.. I guess Hans is referring to the author list in README? The package maintainer probably looked at COPYING (contains GPL, as usual) and AUTHORS (an empty file) and didn't realize that README was actually an important addendum to the license and omitted the file from the package by mistake. To prevent such problems in the future, perhaps the ReiserFS project could move the deviations from GPL from README to the beginning of COPYING and move the author list to AUTHORS? Additionally, it might be a good idea to provide a shoreter list of authors in addition to the detailed one for easier copying to 'standard copyright files' like 'copying' in Debian. - Jarno
Re: Bug#189461: ITP: oilwar -- Defend your country from oil-thirsty invaders
Evil army is attacking your country and tries to steal your oil. Your mission is to waste the invaders, protect the oil and save your mother land. I'm not quite sure if you these joke games of current interest really deserve to go in the repository.. They usually have no playability nor any other entertainment value once the gag is outdated. This one seems to be no exception. - Jarno
Re: stop the manage with debconf madness
Would it already be time for a long term solution that no doubt has been discussed sometimes in the past: looking at configuration files in /etc and ~/.*, most of them are actually very simple. Instead of treating them as flat files with arbitrary content and *generating* the managed ones from debconf DB, you could pretty easily *manipulate* them in a more structured and fine grained way by parsing and unparsing them according to developer/maintainer specified metaconfiguration files. In addition to making merging of version specific changes easier, it also allows different configuration interfaces like Debconf now does but during package use, not just installation. In fact, I have previously experimented with such stuff on proprietary software at my work and our experiences there where quite encouraging: handling of blocks and order of configuration elements weren't as difficult as we though they would be, powerful metaconfiguration files could quite easily be created even with error-reducing GUI tools and while perfect solution apparently doesn't exist, comment preserving proved to be possible in practice. It seems there is already at least one current project for developing a tool like this: http://config4gnu.sourceforge.net/ Comments? - Jarno
Re: Bug#188665: RC issue
I'm now getting a redefinition error and couldn't easily figure it out: In file included from conf_analysis_yy.h:5, from conf_analysis.yy:7: /usr/include/FlexLexer.h:112: redefinition of `class yyFlexLexer' /usr/include/FlexLexer.h:112: previous definition of `class yyFlexLexer' Is there a more detailed explanation/tutorial on what has changed and how to update packages using Flex? - Jarno
Re: Bug#127252: -unstable compiled against the wrong libpng
Problem is we still have lots of users who will be wondering where their graphics have gone and will be filing bug reports against all sorts of packages, as well as creating all sorts of bogus links to the wrong shared libraies to work around the problem. (Have a look in debian-kde) How about adding a slang popup notice in libpng3 package stating that the problem is known and being worked on, please don't file new bug reports and uploading it as a new upgrade? - Jarno -- Something's rotten in the state of Denmark. -- Shakespeare
