lxdoom: help wanted
For some time I've been more or less MIA, but in the past month or so it became impossible for me to do debian work: the processor in my desktop, my only Debian machine (the only other machine I own has a proprietary, non-Linux compatible (Airport Extreme) wifi card) released its magic smoke. For that reason, could interested developers please NMU lxdoom? It has a couple of patches in the bts that should be applied. Thanks very much to any who can help. A little logic behind capitalisation rules: It should always be possible to place the short description in a sentence such as $PACKAGE is a[n] $DESCRIPTION without lowercasing the first letter. In cases where the $DESCRIPTION should lead a sentence, the first letter can be unconditionally uppercased without a problem. mmsclient is a simple client to download streaming audio and/or video media from the internet using the MMS protocol. It even insert a link rel tag at the top (Only really shows off H1, H2 and PRE). - This now (Version 4.0) allows the Z Style Sheet to be rendered into a page in one of three different ways (Based on the linkstyle property) * Normal Z Style Sheet : Default same as sheetname.tag * Insert a Style Block : Same as sheetname.style * ZMI Compatible : This is a special mode to be compatible with the manage_page_style.css We can found licence here. This is too detailed. How about anti-censorship network client? ENTROPY is developed as a response to increasing censorship and surveillance in the internet. The program connects your computer to a network of machines which all run this software. The ENTROPY network is running parallel to the WWW and also other internet services like FTP, email, ICQ. etc. The acronym ENTROPY should be defined in the first line of the long description. For the user the ENTROPY network looks like a collection of WWW pages. The difference to the WWW however is that there are no accesses to central servers. And this is why there is no site operator who could log who downloaded what and when. Every computer taking part in the ENTROPY network (every node) is at the same time server, router for other nodes, caching proxy and client for the user: that is You. After you gained some experience with the ENTROPY network, there are command line tools for you to insert whole directory trees into the network as a ENTROPY site. So ENTROPY does for you what a webspace provider does for you in the WWW - but without the storage and bandwidth costs and without any regulation or policy as to what kind of content you are allowed to publish. Everyone can contribute his own ENTROPY site for everybody else to browse through. The contents is stored in a distributed manner across all available and reachable nodes and no one can find out about who put up what contents into the network. Even if your node is not actively running, your contents can be retrieved by others -- without knowing that it was actually you who published the files. Of course this is only true if you do not publish your name (or leave your name or other personal data in the files you publish) This is a good, though perhaps too detailed, long description. Dependencies tell you whether a given package runs in a given environment. The average user does not give a shit whether the program they are running uses Qt or GTK. Take these sentences as a set and derive the conclusion, the description should not mention toolkits. (At least, for applications. It's hard for a toolkit to not mention the toolkit.) Re: NEWS.Debian support is here
On Friday, July 4, 2003, at 04:02 AM, Luca - De Whiskey's - De Vitis wrote: Just curious: why not NEWS.gz for native packages? It's prohibitively difficult to detect whether any given file is in debian changelog format. NEWS[.gz] exists in many packages already, and is of no particular format in general, apt-listchanges doesn't know what to do with it (and will in fact display the entire file every time). Since we can't rely on the existence of NEWS.Debian.gz (as it's not required, like the changelog is) we can't tell which file is the one we're looking for by filename alone. So, instead, we have decided that mandating NEWS.Debian is a better solution.

Regardless of whether that something is dumping and re-loading databases, reconfiguring a radically changed package, or re-entering the PCI BusID in a valid format, the warning (or error) informs the administrator that action is required on their part. Anything else should be placed in NEWS.Debian.

On Wed, 2003-07-02 at 14:00, Matt Zimmerman wrote: It does not belong in debconf. Put it in the changelog -- users who want to know what's changing on their system should be looking there anyway, and tools such as apt-listchanges make it easier and ever to access changelog information. This kind of thing would go in the hypothetical NEWS.Debian, but unfortunately I haven't gotten around to implementing support for it in apt-listchanges yet. Having just implemented support for NEWS.Debian in apt-listchanges (see 192089), and being generally against debconf notes, I disagree that in this case debconf should be avoided. This is not news; it requires changes from the system administrator. Joey Hess has mentioned, and I agree (see 199722), that debconf notes should really be named (and should always be interpreted as) warnings. One example we discussed during Debconf 2 was that of database software which, because of a format switch, requires a dump and re-load. In that case a warning is all you can provide, as there is no way to automatically find and convert all databases on a machine. This is a similar situation. There is, by the admission of the maintainer, no good way to convert between the 'old way' of running stunnel and the new way. Should this truly be the case, debconf should be used to warn the admin that stunnel will need configuration changes before it will function. Now, I agree that there should be some method of not breaking the configuration. But, if there truly is no way to avoid breakage, Debconf is the correct method of informing the administrator of this fact.

I'm a very strong believer that any header file which requires another header file should include it. I think that most Debian developers are with me on this issue; the old-style make the client include what I need headers are losing favour, I think. So, given this idea of making header files include what they need, it seems pretty natural to extend that idea to -dev packages. Thus, -dev packages should depend on what they need to work; this includes all header files they include. I imagine a dpkg-shlibdeps workalike could be created for this purpose if it became an issue. w.r.t point 3, I think it's pretty natural to extend earlier ideas to symbols needed at link time. In most cases this will probably have a fairly large intersection with the set of packages depended upon for their headers. I think it makes sense to Depend upon -dev packages which are required (most of the time?) when building a program using the library in question. The idea is to make -dev packages as useful as possible, so a person doesn't get a rude shock when they have to install a whole whack of other packages just to get their GLU-using programs to compile.

What makes a debconf?
I have no objection to the existence of a Debian conference in the US, particularly given that people are clamouring for one. (I probably won't go, though.) However, I have been bothered by something for a while now: there is no real way to distinguish debconf from some other Debian conference, excepting that it's called 'debconf.' I know that in organising debconf 2 in Toronto, I simply asserted control and said Debconf 2 will be at York University. When Tollef said he wanted to organize Debconf 3 in Oslo, I backed down on my desire to have Debconf 3 in Canada again, deferring it to 2004. It's not entirely clear to me what makes Debconf into 'the' Debian conference. For example, if this conference in the US ends up happening, what's to say it isn't Debconf 3? The defining characteristics, so far as I can define them, are that it is annual, and Debian developers go to it. Do we need some method of deciding what constitutes 'the' Debconf?
Re: Debian conference in the US?
On Sun, 2003-05-18 at 22:07, Aaron M. Ucko wrote: What are other developers' feelings on the matter these days? While convenient for american developers, there are rather a number of non-american developers who will not set foot on American soil, due in part to the DMCA and (I imagine) the apparent dangers to non-americans coming into the country. For those reasons, I am planning to organise Debconf 4 in Vancouver (or maybe somewhere else, if there's a lot of hate for vancouver) sometime in the summer of 2004.

Packages affected by removal of free mp3 players
If the worst does happen, and we need to remove all mp3 players from Debian, many packages will be affected. Most of these are because of their dependency on libsmpeg, which is the SDL MPEG audio and video decoder. Others depend on other MP3-playing libraries, such as libmad, mpeglib (which is named oddly), etc. (Please let me know if I've forgotten some.) A few packages depend on mpg321 as well - mostly front-ends. Some notable packages affected are pygame (affects pyddr, for those unfortunate few who cannot attend the 12-step meetings), alsaplayer, GAnSO, ogle, and many others. One of the main culprits is libsdl-mixer1.2, I think: this causes many (most?) SDL games, including frozen-bubble, to be affected by the removal of libsmpeg0. I don't know if libsdl-mixer can be compiled without smpeg support, though, or what this would mean for users of libsdl-mixer1.2. In the very worst case, we may be able to get a new upstream version of libsdl-mixer released which supports only Vorbis. For those which depend on pure mp3 playing libraries such as libmad, we may be SOL - especially in the case of programs which require the ability to decode MPEG 1 layer 3, like ogle. Suggestions are welcome. However, for free packages, Removal could be moving them to non-free or contrib, which notwithstanding Branden's thoughts is still a possibility. -- Joe Drew [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] This particular group of cats is mostly self-herding. -- Bdale Garbee

I have to admit that I'm considering just dropping development of mpg321 altogether, particularly if it's our judgement that we can't ship it. I can't say that I'd be overly sad in that case - the only mp3s I acquire these days are illegal ones my friends send me, as I encode all my CDs to Ogg now - but it's still a sign that we are just so utterly unimportant in a society ruled by the megacorps. Yes, this is true. However, we also have the burden of hiring legal counsel to defend ourselves, and this is the real problem: we plain can't afford to do so - very few people can (generally it's only corporations who do). So, while we will legally be considered not-guilty or not-liable until we are found otherwise (probably), we just plain don't have the resources to establish the precedent or our not-liable-ness, and so must simply bow to the patent holder's request - i.e., they get what they want without a fight from us. -- Joe Drew [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] A veritable oggasm of patent law erupts and coats all readers of debian-devel
