A levelezm azt hiszi, hogy Martin Michlmayr - Debian Project Leader a
kvetkezeket rta:
 * Jaldhar H. Vyas [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2005-02-23 09:18]:
A Call to Action in OASIS
Debian has a representative in OASIS doesn't it?

Yes (Mark Johnson); I already mailed him to ask for his comments.

I would be happy if Debian would do everything possible against
standards covered by patents.

It is our essential interest.

For cases where the added functionality is provided by additional packages,
this is easy. However, some of the things which are being experimented with
include compiler patches to produce binaries which make certain types of
exploits more difficult, and that kind of thing is not easy to merge into
 Debian proper.

I think this kind of stuff could be handled in new architectures. For
example the Adamantix project could be merged back by creating
an architecture i386-adamantix for the stack protected stuff, and
the other parts being a CDD by the terminology of the above link.

(I do not know enough about the history of the project to tell if its
developers would consider merging back a good idea or an organisational
impossibility. But the main point is not about that, or even that project
in particular.)

It seems fairly clear that this was not an issue because the compromised
user had accounts on all of the relevant systems.

It occurs to me that
-limiting shell access did save one machine for some time
-this machine had been compromised using a trust relationship
between it and an other compromized debian machine

The question (as ever):
What is the good balance between security (limiting access
and trust relationship in this case), and efficiency of processes
(debian developers' work in this case)?

I demand that the above may or may not mean that trust relationships
and shell access should be restricted, but certainly means that the
possibility and impacts of such measures should be thought about.

Can requesting removal from archive be automated, to occur say after 3

As a DD, I assume there is some pride and/ or utility in having your
package in the archive. This would give you a little no nonsense
wakeup call I would guess. And if *even the packager themselves* do not
have enough pride/ utility value in worrying at that point, then it is
 likely better to get removed.

Agreed. But beware, because we could end up with having a lot of
blue users and maintainers. To make the thing more efficient, a
good mental approach should be developed. Maybe making a request
for removal special in some ways? I think there are two things
to consider:
-make the fact as public as possible, so both the userbase and
the other developers be notified. Publicize at least two weeks
before the deadline.
-educate users and developers about how can they motivate the
maintainer to do her job well: the RFR report should include
a text explaining why the package would be removed, what
one can do to prevent this, what is the right attitude when
one communicates with the maintainer

I guess having kernel-image-vanilla and/or
kernel-image-onlybugfix in debian would not hurt.

   b) I don't do huge monolitic patches

I think the same about the rest, however I understand that
Herbert does the best kernel debs you can apt-get install,
and he does a very importand job no one else is willing to
do, and he does it well (but with a different approach I or
you do not do).

No, really. This is what stable and testing releases are for.

I fully agree. But...

When I tell it to my friends, some say that stable is way too
old for them. In these cases I used to think about how the
release cycle could be shortened. (I am also thinking about
this thing when we talk about the kernel...)

In theory it would be possible to state only one or two
release goals, announcing feature freeze shortly after
stable is out, and some draconian rules for deep freeze
would help. If one knows that the next window to put new
features in is close, and even if the release goals are
clear for two or more next stable releases, it would be
easier to behave seriously both for the maintainer who
is eager to stick new nifty features in, and the user
who wants to use them.

This is IMHO. And what is your opinion?

Also pretty harmless, and syslog-ng's fault.

The upload closing this bug is ready, and slowly crawles up to
master.

BTW how much is it decent to wait before resending a request to the
